In 1973, renowned tennis hustler and long-ago men’s number one Bobby Riggs, 55, had already beaten then-women’s number one Margaret Court when he challenged Billie Jean King, 29, to a match. In a momentous feminist rebuke to Riggs and his fellow male chauvinists everywhere, King routed him in the “Battle of the Sexes” at the Houston Astrodome before an international TV audience. A decade ago, investigative reporter Don Van Natta probed intriguing new evidence that Riggs, an inveterate gambler who associated with mob figures, might have thrown the match.
