Doubling indicates zircon ( along with nibbled facet edges). For CZ, put it table down and look at the dispersion coming from the pavillion... If it's mostly dark blue and orange (NYMets colors) it's CZ.
Great episode Rob. Really enjoyed it. I'd love to see more episodes like this featuring individual gem stones and imitators and how to tell them apart.
I love this video!! Now I don't know if this idea is practical at all, so feel free to disregard! BUT I think it would be so interesting to see a video of y'all going to thrift store jewelry sections (or buying random jewelry from a second hand shop) and trying to find/identify real and random faceted gems? :o Would be cool to see if you manage to find any *ahem* HIDDEN GEMS 😜
I learned more from you today than I have in the past 4 years watching anyone .I cannot tell you how much I appreciate how thorough ,descriptive ,and detailed this study was with you . I must say you have a very brilliant and beautiful mind and a remarckable eye for all things beautiful and of most sophisticated taste my friend!!Bravo!! Bravo!!!!
The fastest way to check a diamond…if it’s loose….put it down on a black surface. If you can see black (the black surface it’s sitting on) it’s not a diamond. You cannot see through a diamond.
Please do a similar video on identification on rough diamonds. Many young enthusiasts like me pick up a zircon or Topaz or quartz and mistake it for diamond. If lucky, we even pick up phenakite. But i want you to make a video on rough diamond.
Hoping you saw this one: ruclips.net/video/6VPmRPnUeyQ/видео.html ...we'll think about doing another specifically on ID. But in the meantime, you may want to consider getting an inexpensive polariscope. Assuming you can pass light through the gems, those other stones you mentioned should go dark 4 times through a 360 degree rotation on the polariscope, while diamond, being isotropic, should not.
What i also look out for when inspecting a suspected"diamond", especially when I am handling clients' own jewelry, is inclusions: it is unlikely to buy a flawless or IF diamond for a cheap price, and if my client tells me they got it for cheap, and i see no inclusions of some sort, then I question myself and I do further research! ps - love your videos guys, keep going

Great video, I am also doing my best to emerge as a great gemologist under the guidance of my dad Mr Abdul Jabbar Khan (FGA) and also learning from your channel alot thanks❤️💯
Really well done videa! 8+ minutes to educate a layperson to avoid a very expensive mistake using easy to understand descriptions and practical visual examples. Thanks for doing this.
Thanks for this information but some notes on some things (fire to not high skill eye level can’t see difference about desperations ) sometimes the diamonds have scratch marks or polishing marks on the service cald blemishes and it’s can make cloudy stone look (rarely seen) for any experts can detect the diamonds from the inclusions types but no one can tell if that treated or lab growth
Would love to hear more about jade, especially since there is so much treated material (even set in 14k) out there! It's hard to tell, especially in solid color items. These type I'm afraid to buy. Is it possible to use a particular rule or tip to identify this bogus material?
Can you do a video on how to differentiate glass, lead crystal, and rock gemstone (like quartz)? Especially for older/antique beaded jewelry, clear faceted beads are so difficult for me to differentiate. How can we test the difference?
moissanite seems superior as it is equally hard to diamonds, but is silica based instead of carbon which is why it has more spectral colors/fire. Diamonds are artificially expensive and really aren't that amazing compared to other stones. You'll be happier with moissonite on a ring unless you only want to brag about owning a diamond.
What about UV light? I put my ring with 10 diamonds under a UV light and only one of them had a greenish glow. What’s that about? Thank you for the video you shared, great information and it was explained very well. 👍
Good day sir,, i want to ask you,,do you have a experience about the mud diamond? Because i have a friend he is discover the mud diamond,, do you know how to process it? I hope you answer in my question.... Thank you ♥️
I wonder if there have ever been diamond findings alongside pyrite? I have this skull with all signs of it being pyrite but, it comes from Peru and the skull has coral growth on the mother lustre with, diamond growth signs in the pyrite lustres.🧐I have uploaded the piece on a short but am still bafled by the thing.
Cool thank you for being so down to earth. I will like, subscribe etc. I would like to know about topaz vs aquamarine. How to tell the difference in particular thank you and have a great day!
Maybe you should add one more point in Diamond identification. The Dot analysis. Where you simply draw a large dot on paper and place the stone inverted( turning the table top facing down) on top of the dot. If it's a real diamond you won't see the dot through the stone. If the dot is visible then it's a fake diamond💎.
On two different occasions I found faceted clear gems lying on road / sidewalk. Where in toronto can I find an expert who could tell if these are diamonds or not. I placed these on a schoolboy's scale and found that these could be 1 ct. and 1.5 ct. A professional can make accurate measurement and weigh them too and also use loop for polishing quality and i guess there are electromagnetic instruments to test material ... all these i know from videos and blogs but where can i get a person to do all these tests in toronto? ... i can certainly try to scratch (say on concrete paved sidewalk with stone chips of different types) and see if it scratches ... would moissanite scratch if rubbed on such surfaces? I seriously want to sell these two gems if they are real diamond but apparently no jewelry shop ever buys from retail seller
Great video! I have a “suspected“ diamond pendant in the shape of a peace sign. All the gems are pretty small and since they are in a pendant I won’t be able to look at the back but I’m gonna have to get myself a loop today. I looked at it under a UA light. I think I might have accidentally bought a diamond pendant for nine dollars. Lol.
Love listening to your videos...I have to point out though, just from experience...the 'cut' of a diamond could very well be off and uneven..it all depends on who cut it and in what country it was cut...our western standards for cutting are not at all the same as elsewhere and of course historically, when diamonds were hand cut, they were not perfect at all...I love old mine cuts and have never seen one that was perfectly cut with matched facet edges meeting exactly where we would think they should..this cannot be used to determine if what you are looking at is a diamond at all...
Most common type of diamond is with octahedral structure which is also gem quality diamond but what about tetrahedral structure of diamond..never seen any real Form Of Tetrahedral Structure Of Diamond 💎 Y So??
Ser I have a diamond letter A sign my ring the color of my diamond es yellow cercle, shape, and triangle, the replecktion color red yellow and green es that real or not
Very informative video, thank you. I just bought a diamond ring off of Etsy and while it is very beautiful, I'm suspicious as heck. I will take it to my local jeweler for verification.
Absolutely! Fluorite and topaz are often identified due, in part, to their cleavage planes. Kyanite has a distinct splintery fracture. Many more examples, but those are just off the top of my head.
The luster and hardness are good indicators. If it is very rough, with no crystal form, it might be reasonable to conduct a scratch test. Nothing should scratch diamond, but diamond.
The Cost of Diamonds versus their Value are two different things. Diamonds are NOT Rare at all. In fact, they are quite plentiful especially when considering industrial diamonds versus gem diamonds. The ONLY thing that makes them "appear" rare is the fact that the Industry regulates and limits the number of diamonds to be put in the market each year. The Industry controls the flow and thus the rarity. Meanwhile the Industry has MILLIONS of diamonds and the vast majority of Large and/or Unique diamonds which will never see the market unless they can increase the Cost to a point that makes sense to sell something. It's all a big SCAM if you ask me which is why I promote Lab-Made Diamonds to my friends. Why waste money on a big scam when you can get an equally beautiful, genuine diamond for much less cost and thus don't have to play in the crooked game of diamond sales.
First of all that is wrong. Cubic zirconium give out rainbow colors. A diamond does not give off rainbow colors you have different clarity of diamonds. The average person that buys a diamond from a pawn shop is going to be white cloudy with no color at all. When you get in the other clarities it gives you a spark and moissanite gives Sparks to and you cannot see through a diamond. If you can see through the diamond don't buy it. You can see through moissanite and a diamond does not look anything like a Cupid zirconium. That's the first tail sign of a fake diamond it's shining with rainbow colors cubic zirconium
Doubling indicates zircon ( along with nibbled facet edges). For CZ, put it table down and look at the dispersion coming from the pavillion... If it's mostly dark blue and orange (NYMets colors) it's CZ.

I found a London Topaz in sterling in a thrift shop. Lots of pearls, and some jade. It is there, you just have to know what it is.

Please consider doing a video about mm measurements of a stone vs. carats.

Hi, good information thank you, also could you tell me, essentials that one should have to identify rough diamonds with naked eyes.
Please do a similar video on identification on rough diamonds. Many young enthusiasts like me pick up a zircon or Topaz or quartz and mistake it for diamond. If lucky, we even pick up phenakite. But i want you to make a video on rough diamond.

Cool tips! But what's truly valuable about diamonds? Apart from their hardness. (I prefer 1) optical effects, 2) colors, 3) worlds inside)
