my dad said the sound of a Huey's chop-chop-chop was the most comforting sound a ground pounder could ever hear. It meant food, ammo, support, reinforcements, or a ride home.
Mark Carranza what a Wonderful comment. Indeed, we are are now enjoying the sound of the chopper, but in wartime it was something completely different. Indeed it meant hope.

No other helicopter has such an iconic sound and has become so well known as the Huey. From a medical evacuation concept, to war hero, to immortalized legend in the world of cinema and video games. People will still remember the UH-1 Huey even after 100 years.

@@mursuhillo242 i'm not american, nor did i support U.S in Vietnam War. However, what he stated above is all about how Huey did a good job in a war. And with 16,000 UH-1s with another 12,000 Model 205s (civies Huey) having produced and its latest iteration, the UH-1Y, still being produced today, they'll probably get to fly them too.
Flew UH-1 Hotel back in 1970 and early 71 in country. God I love that aircraft! The rocking motion at startup, to the vibrations of the air frame at take off. That vibration telling me everything you needed to know about her. No matter how beat up she was, always manage to get all of us back safe. I went to the Helicopter Heroes event here in Christchurch New Zealand a few year's ago and had the absolute privilege of front row centre for a UH1 startup and flyby. I could feel the crack of the rotors travelling up through my legs on takeoff, and it's something I'll never forget. It has to be one of the most iconic sounds of all time.
Quincy Neal also the Fearsome AH-1 Never came alone they always have back up to draw away fire from the gunship it just takes a good old anti aircraft gun to take it down
Best sound in the world. Blackhawks will never replace the Huey in my heart. The Huey will always be the best utility chopper in the world to me! The "thwop-thwop-thwop" sound was probably the most beloved sound a soldier could hear in Vietnam. My father flew slicks in Vietnam for the first couple months before transitioning into the Cobra gunship. I grew up hearing the Huey all the time. Thank you very much for posting this!
Besides the soldiers the two most iconic figures of Vietnam are the M16 and UH-1 huey. Because if you're watching a movie or lokking at a picture, you don't even need to know the name of the movie or what it's about at first sight, or what the captions on the picture say once you see the UH-1 huey, you know instantly it's about Vietnam. Very iconic and bad ass piece of shear power
Beautiful. Miss my younger days as a 67N10 Huey mechanic/crew chief. As an A+P now..... no aircraft I have worked on brings to my heart and being the feeling the UH-1H, 1D did. I remember standing on the top of the airframe holding onto the rotor mast and scissor/swashplate arm while little kids waved. Walking in for lunch in a flight suit after landing. Testing engine igniter's... POP, POP, POP! Tapping on the removed rotors and that sound down the honeycomb. I joined the Army for this aircraft and I still love it. Should have been a pilot instead of a mechanic, though, I think sometimes.
My twin brother crewed and fixed these for about 15 years. He was part of a VIP unit in Germany as well. He sent this video and it gives such a reverence to those who were crew on them. Later the Army sent him a "We're Sorry" letter inviting him back with a promotion to WO-4 and a job as a test pilot at Yuma Proving Grounds. Gotta love the blade sound of the UH-1 Huey it is the best sounding helicopter.
the sound of huey's flying by, the smell of napalm, it is just like vietnam back in the days
