  • hello :) i started taking an adult ballet class back in january and made this video to show my progress so far. its definitely scary starting a discipline like ballet when you're older but this is your sign that its never too late to start :) its scary to learn things as an adult because as we get older it somehow seems less okay to be mediocre at things. but my goal is to be a lifelong learner which means that i will always have room for improvement - WHICH IS OKAY. its okay to be bad at things and still do them. failure/being bad at things is a product of becoming better! anyways thats the end of my mini rant, enjoy!
if youre reading this, you are perfect and you can do whatever you set your mind to. sending love from CA!

You are doing a great job at 1 month! I could barely balance at centre even after 2 months of adult ballet class.

This is super relatable. I'm also in my 20s and just got back into ballet from when I was a child. I'm the worst in my class and totally lost when we do floor work away from the bar. Overall, it's very fun and nostalgic. Good luck on your ballet journey!

I've definitely been there several times (With being the worst in the class)! It's hard, but so worth it. I've gotten so much better since I started, and now I'd say I'm in the upper 30% of my class!

UR FOOT ARCH IS ALREADY QUITE GOOD?? i started ballet pretty late too and i still can't get my foot to look like that, ur feet already has an advantage with it's natural arch!! if ur planning to keep going (i def think u should!!) and u become more flexible, u can definitely easily get * that * ballet foot arch and get really clean beautiful lines!

I’m so proud of you! I’m 46, and restarted ballet last year after almost 30 years (I danced age 13-17). I am in a class with young girls age 10-18, and it’s very challenging, and I love it. I am already so much better than I was 6 months ago, and am even dancing in our ballet school’s production of the Nutcracker!
    PS I subscribed.

Same! I’m also a 28-year-old who decided to start adult ballet. Today was my second day and I ended up doing a beginner/intermediate class, ngl I left feeling a little discouraged so I came to YT looking for beginner videos and came across this one .! So glad I did, it motivated me to continue. But I wanted to know if you kept it up @beacurious

I have deffinitely been the one person in the advanced class who has no idea what they're doing (they put me with the PRE-PROFESSIONALS, who thought that was a good plan???) but I can say that with practice, IT GETS BETTER. You are already doing a stellar job!

I hardly believe thats the evolution after just 4classes. Even after one year I would still say you made a really good Job! I have seen people dancing since children or since more than 10 years way much much much more worse! You can point your foot, stay straight, you keep your turnout....I believe you have done before gymnastics or ice-skating or sth related to ballet? Otherwise is almost imposible to believe

If you experienced lower back pain then you should include lower ABS and core training, to strenghten muscles that hold your pelvis. The tailbone should point towards the floor during ballet most of the time. Check barre au sol trainings, kniaziev gymnastics or some pilates. My ballet teacher usually started the class with this kind of workout, then we moved to the bar. At the very begining we did most of our classes on the floor, and i believe that is what gave me the best progress as a dancer.

Okay. I’m glad I read a post of what they felt about your progress. I should be understanding and encouraging. But here’s the thing. I was told it’s difficult to correct a bad habit, than it is to learn to do it correctly the first time. So here’s a list of things to include with your training. Use your turnout always. When you tendu forward, use your inner thigh muscles, and scape the floor with the soles of your ballet slipper, and lead the foot with the heel of you foot. Always do an exercise with straight legs, then when you repeat it, add a demi plie’. Your demi plies are not relaxed and deep enough. I see one of your heels popping off the floor. You have to use the bottom of your feet like suction cups against the floor. When you do a tendu a la seconde, again the heel of the working leg must be rotated forward. If it’s not, then reduce the angle of the turnout of the working leg. Again inner thigh, with the heel forward. Now when the leg travel to the back, things go in reverse. When the leg travels back the toes lead, and continue maintaining the turnout. Now, when the leg travels forward, the heel leads. So any time the leg moves forward the heel leads, and when the legs travels back the toes leads. When doing a ronde de jambe, the heel is forward traveling in either direction. When you bring the leg up into passe’, do it as though your shaving your leg. The heel is to remain forward. When develope’ forward, the heel is facing up. When you develope’ to the back, the toes are rotated up, not the heel of the foot. Your thighs are hurting, because you are using your leg muscles incorrectly. What I see is your gripping your quads to lift the leg. You’re to only use your inner thigh muscles to work your leg. This is where you’re going to have trouble retraining yourself to use the correct muscles in your legs to do things in the correct way. Work on your demi plies a lot and the direction your heels of your feet when doing any exercises at the barre. I wish I could be there to help with your ballet training. You have an excellent place and floor space to work on your own. But you don’t have a large mirror to see how you’re doing your barre work and pirouettes. Feel the floor through your slipper and grip the floor using your toes like suction cups. These are the basic fundamentals to think about each time you work on at the barre. Stop using you age as an excuse or sympathy, just dance. Oh lastly, learn too breathe properly, and learn to stretch to increase your range of motion.
