PLEASE START BALLET AS AN ADULT! They're so right when they say there are about a million benefits to learning this beautiful craft. And take it from me, it can absolutely change your whole life. I started in my late 20s and it turned my world upsidedown. Now at 30, I'm learning pointe, dancing 4-5 days a week and generally feeling the most fulfillment I've ever experienced! I started ballet when I was 3, and all I ever wanted was to go on pointe. I danced until age 11, and was supposed to go on pointe the following year when my parents took me off lessons. Heartbreak, trauma, resentment about it for over 20 years. Finally in my late 30's I decided I was responsible for my life and what I do with it and that I would go back and take lessons again. I found an adult class and danced again until covid. Other stuff happened and I am just now this year getting back to lessons, age 51. Here's the best part - I got my first pair of pointe shoes yesterday and start my first pointe class in 3 weeks!!!!!! This is literally a dream 48 years in the making come true and I am beside myself with joy! My body hurts, I have crappy turnout and extension, I get tired from 3 jumps, but none of that matters, I feel like the ballerina I always dreamed of being and once I start pointe I know I won't stop! So yeah, anyone can do it if they have the will and the passion, age does not matter. I plan on dancing for at least the next 30 years!

I regret not having started ballet dance younger. However, the perk of my lateness is that now, and for now, ballet is my hobby, not my career. And it is so much easier for my mental health. Less pressure, less anxiety. I'm doing it because I love it, and I don't have to be good at it. ' You don't have to be good at your hobbies, you have to enjoy them. '
If I have the opportunity, I will probably jump on the occasion to try going professionnal in some way involving ballet dance. Like working with point shoes, scene direction, choreography, all of that. And if not ? Well. I'm a translator, a private teacher and a content creator... that do ice dance and ballet, and that's really cool too.

Hi! Adult 23 year old beginner who has now been dancing for 4 months. Ever since I have been BREATHING ballet everyday. Scream it for the people in the back that it's never too late, and as I've joined the community and others I've spoken to. I can say that it's also never too late to go en pointe either! The studio I dance with has opportunities to grow all the way up to pointe. This goes for teens too that didn't start as a peewee child. You can make it as intense or as simple as you want while still being constructive. All I have to say is do it! It helped me so much connecting with my femininity. Something I've never had before. Good luck everyone!

So I started ballet when I was younger along with ballroom and tap and I loved it (at first). I eventually got my first pair of pointe shoes and it was the happiest day of my life. Well fast forward a year, I had people saying really mean things to me like "ballet isn't meant for black people" or "you will never go far because of the color of your skin". So much hatred caused me to completely drop out of ballet. Fast forward to 2021 I was asked to be in a production of The Nutcracker in the party scene and it took lots of convincing for me to even step into a ballet studio because of my past trauma. But I did and really enjoyed it there, and I was very surprised to see that the ballet world has changed since I was younger. Now I've been there 3 years and even went back en pointe which feels very different from when I was younger. They also offer an adult class there as well that I take alongside my other classes and the people there are so much fun. A lot of them have never danced before or wanted to but never thought that they could do ballet and some have their children enrolled in the studio too. My main advice for anyone wanting to do ballet, no matter if you have dance experience or a beginner is to just go for it. Go do what you love and make the most of it because the only one holding you back is yourself.

I've been taking a weekly adult ballet class for about 1.5 years now, and I can't believe I put off doing it for as long as I did. Here are some things that have stuck out to me so far:
    - Ballet is a mental challenge as much as it's a physical one. I danced in other styles as a child so learning combinations wasn't as difficult for me as others, but I really struggled "flip" them at first. The key is to really learn them and not rely on copying what you see because then you'll do it backwards.
    - I wasn't prepared for how much it would change my body in a such a short time. I think some people starting ballet are motivated by losing weight or getting smaller legs, but know that's not necessarily what will happen. Obviously individual experiences will vary, but by doing ballet my legs have gotten noticeably larger due to muscle gain. I knew that was a possibility but I was expecting it slowly over time, and instead I got noticeable changes week to week. Like I have palpable muscles on the bottoms of my feet now.
    - It can be hard to see progress, but trust me it's there. When you go to class it can be easy to feel stuck or like you're not improving, but I think it's because we have the tendency to compare ourselves to last week instead of last year. Everyone is on their own timeline, and if you go to class and feel bad that you're not as good as someone else it's not because you're bad at ballet; it's probably just because they've been doing it longer than you.

Another excellent presentation. One point I might stress for "older" adults (>40?) who have been desk bound for the last 20 years or so - your flexibility / range of motion will likely have regressed since your teenage years. Ballet is an ATHLETIC movement and trying to copy positions without proper form (correct muscles engaged) will lead to much frustration and possible injury. Not being able to "engage" the correct muscles is almost always a flexibility issue. And re-establishing that flexibility can take significant time. A muscle not exercised in 20 years will NOT magically have a full range of movement with 20 minutes of stretching. Think weeks and months, possibly years.
You often see sedentary men who take a fancy to golf at a late date (40 +) because they think the golf swing is just a "hand-eye" coordination exercise, when in fact it is very much an athletic movement requiring the aforementioned flexibility / range of motion / correct muscle engagement. Even the correct address position is an athletic setup.
So I would suggest you have an understanding of the MINIMUM athletic requirements required before you commit a lot of time, effort and money on lessons. If you've spent the last 20 years in a yoga program (and assuming you are performing the positions correctly,) you should be in good shape to tackle any form of dance. If you're most athletic movement over the last 20 years is opening / closing the fridge door, well you may consider some serious preliminary work to ensure your body is ready for actual dance lessons.
Just my thoughts - once again a superb production ladies.

    Hello!
I wish you can talk about injuries and recovery in ballet.
I was a ballet dancer for 6 years (2001-2007) in the journey to become a professional one, and I had to stop because of several injuries on my left knee (patella dislocation)😢.
I came back to adult classes last year and I got (again) 2 knee injuries and had to stop after 3 months. I was so sad and frustrated about it that I decided to do all the physical therapy as possible 45 sessions in total) to go back. My ortho told me that I have to build and strengthen my quads, abductors and bodycore if I want get back to the studio without future injuries. I started this 2024 going to the gym working on that, let’s see how it goes 💪🏽

To avoid injuries it is very important to have good basic instructions in technique. This is a quality in teachers that is not easy to recognize for beginners.
If your goal is a 180 degree penché on point in the first lesson, your knees might give out after the first pliés with fake turn-out.

For me, and maybe only for me, a half-step to the left of that is that I have the people in my class that I consider like... Yesterday I called the dance school where my son does a million classes and nervously asked if they’d be willing to give me private lessons. They said yes. I still feel sick with nerves, my negative head keeps reminding me I’ve not got the right body for ballet, I’m blind, I’ll look ridiculous. A few months into ballet and doing things properly and on BOTH sides, the hip pain started to calm down. I also have found it to be emotionally healing and freeing because I'm never going to be great so I can work towards my good at my pace. I really appreciate the motivational tone of this video but I think that it's important to make potential students aware of cautions.
Thanks for referring listeners to your "old" etiquette video. For an in person class it's important to understand that there's a CULTURE of ballet: it's not just another gym or exercise class and you shouldn't behave as if you are the center of the universe.
Also I think that a warning should be made about point shoes. Dancing on point should NOT be a goal, especially for beginners over, I don't know, 40 years old. Building up strength and flexiblity for point should take years AND a professional teacher's approval or blessing. There are too many potential ways to get injured without proper oversight.
    I love you ladies ❤️

I started ballet because I am working alone in an alien country and ballet is how I cope with stress in work and in life.
I've been a ballet fan all my life and now I feel like have a deeper appreciation as I go to watch ballet and have even more love for ballet!

I started ballet at 40 after a 28 year break. Two years on, ive moved from beginner to advanced classes. Best decision ever. So much of happiness. The point of ballet as an adult is not to be a professional anyway! It’s a great hobby... highly recommend

I started yoga and ballet during Covid at 40 years old and…miracle … I started touching my toes… my knees and heels go all the way down in lotus and downward dog respectively… Success is not how flexible or graceful you become, though these are natural by-products of the art form. Both forms touch somewhere deep inside that some call sacred or spiritual, and has no age limit. In our digitally overloaded life, movement through dance takes the energy away from the mind and into the body, which is a far greater real estate than the drama happening in our minds. I have found that adult ballet teachers are less critical and judgemental than my inner critic, so that’s very healing for me.

I’m an adult beginner, started last year after a 15 year pause - and my background was jazz dance, not ballet 😂
To expand on the social benefits you guys mentioned, I’m really glad that my class is so diverse - we have college students, retired professionals, housewives and different professions (mainly teachers and public service workers lol). Is so good to have that space to share with people in different roads in life, chit chat and catch up.
My school offer more traditional classes (although we don’t have a pianist lol) and other types of dances (jazz and neoballet seem very popular), so the end of the year rehearsals and show are very fun.
One advice I would give to people starting now, again expanding on something your girls already said, is to understand what you want out of ballet and let your teacher know! Even if you figure it out like a month or so after starting! For example, I want to be training pointe by year 3 (this will be my year 2!), and I communicated that to my teacher as soon as I began, so she passed me some resources on ankle strength training, turnout improvement and will evaluate me by the end of this year to see if I can handle the basic pointe classes (my school has 3 pointe classes during the week, different levels).
So making a little goal for yourself is even good for some motivation - one of my classmates wants to improve flexibility and hip strength, etc.

I started ballet just under a year ago at age 34. I was extremely nervous to go to my first class (my mental health was not in a good place, so it was v easy to get overwhelmed at that time), but once I got there, it wasn't nearly as intimidating as I thought it would be. Ballet isn't easy, but my technique is noticeably improved from day 1 to today. I feel stronger, I can hold upright posture more easily, my plantar fasciitis has improved, and I'm just so excited to go to dance class every time I get to go. My mental health is much better too, which isn't *just* the ballet, but I do believe it helped. I'm much happier for bringing ballet into my life. So if you're reading this and you think it might make you happy, you should try it! In my opinion at least.

@balletreign my teacher's adult beginner ballet classes have really gotten popular this January, so I've even had the lovely experience of helping new (slightly terrified-looking) faces feel welcome and putting them a bit more at ease because that's what I needed when I was where they are. It's a bit corny to say, but it feels so great to pay that forward!

Thank you so much for this very encouraging video. I am a very late male ballet beginner who started with over 50 about 3 years ago. I never did any ballet training before and did not do a lot of sports prior to starting with ballet either. In the meanwhile, I am attending about 5 hours of class per week and I enjoy it enormously. I like the connection with art (even if it is not "proper art" what I am doing) and the body control and effects on my body in general. I was not allowed to take ballet classes as a boy in the 1970ies...so I have to compensate now. It seems to be the best way to reset your mind after work. Of course, I am struggling with a lot of things and want to be able to do everything immediately, but I have to be patient. Unfortunately, male adults are rare, so there is never any pas de deux class....that's a pity. So, males, just go for it!😁

I took dance in high school and quit due to several different reasons (unknown health issues, school, mental health, etc.). People would ask me if I was going to miss it and I always said no. 4yrs went by and I stood true to my answer. But it’s been over 6 yrs now and I can say… I miss it. Been looking around at local dance studios to call and see if they’d be interested in giving private lessons since nobody offers adult lessons in my area.

I started as a kid & have been taking ballet off & on (mostly off as it's tough to juggle early in your career) for about 4 decades. I love it. I dance with the teenagers & it's awesome. They seem to like having an older person in the class. I've been on pointe off & on for 3 decades (again more off than on, alas), so I do that, too. I don't really fit in with the usual adult ballet classes because of my work schedule & also none of the other adults are taking pointe. They also aren't really into nerd culture, so... 😂
Honestly, I hate the gym. It's boring & I won't stick with it. Ballet is so much more fun & much better for my mental health.
That being said, since I am older, I have to keep in mind that I have a family history of arthritis, osteoporosis, etc. I need to stretch & warm up more than the teenagers I dance with. It's fine, just something to be aware of!

for me, ballet is definitely a meditative, safe place. it requires me to turn off all other stressors and thoughts when i'm in the studio, and only focus on what i can control in class - my form, my technique, my artistry. i think it's a beautiful art form, and the space for creative expression is also wonderful

When I wasn't allowed to take ballet at age 12 (family thought I wouldn't stick with it) I did the 1990s precursor to internet courses. I borrowed instructional books from the library, photocopied them at my aunt's office, and tried walking myself through exercises using a bookshelf at a barre. (I saw a photo implying a barre was shoulder height...OOPS!) Unfortunately because I tend to have OCD and be very literal, I was so obsessed with doing every repetition multiple times in each position, I usually never made it past plies and tendus before getting tired and/or bored! LOL I also didn't realize you were supposed to use music, which probably would have made it more enjoyable as well!
I have to second the comment about doing ballet for stress. Right now my biggest motivation is learning some basic port de bras so when I'm stressed out I can lose myself doing that and tendus to calm down!

HIIIII, 18 y/o here. I wanted to share my answer to the first question in the video, since i'm too lazy to go grab a pen and paper lol. And sit tight, because I like to write.
I was always one of of those kids that wanted to be a princess-fairy-ballerina and wore random tutus around. As I grew older, I realized that my body type and strengths were never those of a stereotypical ballet star. I was a little chubby, had asthma and wasn't fexible or graceful at all. Because of that, I turned to the opposite end of the pretty-to-brutal spectrum and started doing karate. I did it for 10 years, just until I graduated high school. I'm starting college now, I left my hometown, and I think this might be the time to try new things and listen to my gut more. Don't get me wrong: I'm tough, and I'll always be tough. One of the reasons I'm starting ballet is because I'm actually very passionate about flamenco (also been doing it for 10+ years) and I think there's a very poised and elegant quality to it that I can't seem to grasp. I tend to go very energetic with it and it ends up looking kinda ugly. That's why I think doing ballet for a while might help me find that perfect middle ground between expression and control. But I would be lying if I didn't also say that it makes me so happy to be finally doing this. I swear I'll be tiny jumping the whole way to the studio. It's so relieving to know that I can be cute and graceful too. I can be whatever the heck I wanna be. As the great Brennan Lee-Mulligan put it, there is also strength in sweetness.
If someone out there got to the end of this comment, please leave a response so I can thank you personally. You don't know how much it means. And if you can't or don't wanna, thank you so much either way. 💖

So, I had a bad first experience with ballet. TLDR, a number of years ago, I was led to believe an audition was something that it wasn't.
I ended up...well...you know that nightmare where you are taking a test in a subject you know nothing about? Yeah, that. Tap ended up being thrown in at the end of a THREE HOUR LONG gauntlet of an audition as more or less an afterthought. It was both mentally and physically the most difficult thing I've ever done. I'm pretty sure the audition panel was having a big ol' laugh at my expense as I rode the strugglebus through that audition, in a room full of dancers that actually had rather significant ballet experience. I still have nightmares! ANYWAY, since I found this channel, it has got me thinking I might want to take a class or two just so I can get closure for myself and actually learn some of the basics, which I previously crash-coursed my way through, in a calmer, lower-pressure environment. lol

I quit dance at 12 because I was considered "too tall to dance" from a very young age, and the pressure got to me, even tho I never intended on becoming a professional dancer. It sucked because I truly loved it, and planned on going back ever since.
I'm 24 now, and I really want to start again, but my knees are really weak and I would risk an injury, so I'm working on strengthening my knees to go back to ballet 😊

Im pregnant right now though, so I'm probably not going to be able to do it until my new son is about a year or two old. Until then, I'll just dance around with my daughter in the living room.

Hi, love your videos. Could you do a video about the audience interaction, what applause means for the ballet dancer, how ballet dancers feel when the public is clapping after each movement, doest it hurt when the audience is slient. Do you milk audience by bowing after each part? What clappimg and audience reaction do you like and what do you hate.

There are so many fine male variations in the Bournoville repetoire, that I really might be tempted to start.
It is the jumps that I am worrying about. Not that I do not have ballon, but the landings are giving me serious concerns.

      @balletreign  8 месяцев назад +5

We believe u can do it! Bournonville pieces, particularly the male variations, are very challenging but if you plot out a path of attainable goals to get there and work on it, u will do it 👏🏻👏🏻

    • @charlottethompson6193
      @charlottethompson6193 8 месяцев назад +1

Good teachers will progress your work step by step to prepare you for safe landings. Your body will be warmed up and you will gradually build strength to jump and land safely. I started ballet as a 43 year old with a history of back surgery and chronic back pain. I always let new teachers know my limitations and that sometimes I’ll have to modify the work. Be honest about any limits you might have and respect what your body tells you. It doesn’t pay to ignore limitations.

Started ballet in college - loved it - I was just OK. Took it up again in my 30s - love it - no worse than lots of the 20 yo ppl - just OK. (I do not and will never have flexible legs). Then did TKD in 40s - love it- got a black belt (will still never have flexible legs). But now I'm 70 coming off surgery. I could always confine myself to doing port de bras in a chair but I fear injury. No confidence even in instructors - since in college as I discovered later, I literally broke my ankle in a modern class taught by the founding chair of the dance dept and after he examined me I was urged 1)NOT to lean on the bar when it hurt and 2)work through it. So. Maybe let the dancer beware? Thoughts, ladies?

We’re sorry that instructor gave you such poor advice in handling ur injury! We would always advise dancers (and people in general) to always listen to their bodies and not to ignore its signals and pain. Sending u good ballet nerd vibes and wishing u a quick recovery from surgery! ❤️

At the age of 43 with some bad knees, is it really feasible for me to be safe and injury-free if I'm learning from online courses? This is the best option for me in every other way, but I'm worried I'm going to hurt myself because I'm not doing it right. Are the recorded courses of a good enough quality that I don't need to worry about injury as long as I'm careful?

Not like need operations but I got rifts near the minisk. On both knees. And that came after the Classic ballet classes! So for now I just swim. So boring when si started to get good at piruettes etc. 😢😢so how to do ballet without hurting the knees as an adult?

I have a question, as I would prefer not to continue in socks or trainers...and bare feet isn't really an option with cats and my sewing hobby 😆 - is it possible to buy a pair of soft shoes online, and if so, how? Our local dancewear shop closed last year, unfortunately.

(I can't afford more than 2 classes per session) I've always wanted to try aerial but I also want to make as much progress as I can in ballet, hopefully to get on pointe again one day.

I would recommend doing 1 ballet and 1 aerial class and see how you like it. Though you might not progress at ballet as fast as you would doing it 2 x a week. But you may find that you really love aerial and want to do it more. That's what happened with me😊

You forgot a MAJOR con of traditional, in-person, adult ballet classes. In my rural hub community (population approximately 20,000 -- Wal-Mart, Target, 3 grocery stores, hospital with 160 beds, Home Depot, people within the surrounding 65 miles drive here for grocery shopping... so in the midst of a rural area, but not a small town, itself) there is no option for adult ballet classes, period -- let alone adults who are complete beginners.
You also didn't ask my biggest question... everyone is addressing the "am I too old" question. What I want to know is "am I too out of shape?" I've had some health issues over the past few years (including Canadian wildfires that have worsened my asthma so that its hard to go outdoors many days during the summers) that have set back my fitness level.
Omg... I sound like Wendy Whiner. Didn't mean for that to happen...

    • @oxoelfoxo

i guess for the "too out of shape", they'd need to find "beginner beginner" classes that will teach them to safely get in shape as they do ballet movements
