    August Coleman from Norfolk, Virginia was before Sailor Jerry. Coleman set the standard for American traditional tattooing, and the many sailors that he Tattooed traveled the world, allowing other artists to see his work and copy him.

      Thanks for letting me know! I hadn't heard of him until now. There is so much tattoo history that has been lost or never recorded that cause many names to slip through the cracks. There are many influential people from the early 1900s that I'm still learning about
