I’ve been doing paperless for over a year now including biology & chemistry diagrams. my tip would be to make the picture small before tracing bc it means less work and you can expand it later.

I highly recommend drawing diagramms in procreate if you have it. Combine all the layers, split the screen and drag and drop the layer. That’s also how I do my titles, doodles, etc :)
If you want to avoid the overlapping when using the highlight method you can zoom in using the zoom box to get a more detailed type way to fill in the image If that makes sense

I hate that the highlighter overlaps :( i used to use notes writer before i bought goodnotes and it had much better highlighter features
