It's exactly why I question people not rating it highly, it can be an absolute lifesaver, I used to pay attention to what upgrades did back in the day, thankfully
I actually found out in my most recent playthrough, and it is really sick, makes the Quarktastic Challenge able to be done much earlier. HP stealing is incredible
14:29 The bladebots have a death animation that flings them away at high speed until they collide with something and explode, if that collision is with another enemy they inflict a small amount of damage on it When the gladiator deals reduced damage it doesn't hit the second gladiator with its attack, it only hits the bladebot which begins its fling-to-death animation and immediately collides with the second gladiator
Holoshield is criminally underrated. Not only it doesn't have lifespan like shield charger so it can reliable defend you against spamming enemies and snipers while you can shoot through it yourself, but it also shoots enemies back with devastating projectile upon hit and most importantly - it's the one and only weapon in game that can HEAL you. It's drain health of nearby enemies, and the more there enemies the faster it heal, plus you can spam plenty of these and they all damage nearby enemies and transfer their damage to heal you, as result you heal pretty fast especially from tradhy enemies that holoshoeld also kills you quickly. It's incredible useful in times when you're low on health and no nanohealth boxes around, especially when you play 100 wave arena mode where your shield charger most likely will run out of ammo pretty quick, this kept me healed at most times and I was still being able to shoot other weapons while holoshield does passive damage and healing. Sure, the deadlocked holoshield is "technically" better, since you have a much wider and slightly taller shield that as well does constant damage anything that touches it so it can be used as area denial tool, plus you can apply extra affliction mode to it, but it lacks the ability to reflect damage back to enemy to shoot them on its own, plus the health drain is gone; would be best if holoshield from UYA and Deadlocked mixed in a perfect shield, maybe on maximum level it could shoot enemies on its own a tiny bit without even if anyone shooting it, just because. Saying shield charger is superior in every way is lying, because it still has life span, and if enemy hit you while it's life span is short but shield is still on you - you just get full damage regardless; you also lose your 20x bolt applifier if you get hit regardless, so shield doesn't save you from that; plus on later levels it attacks nearby enemies on its own with small electric laser that quickly drains the shield charger life span without getting hit, which is really stupid and annoying downside for "upgrade" that shortens the protection usefulness, even if it looks cool and useful on its own; another downside is it's ammo count is too low compared to going commando and you can't even buy ammo for it with GDPA which sucks. If anything shield charger is a cheap way to make you tank more damage more carelessly and make you closer to be invulnerable - which is still awesome and useful, while holoshield is actual defense tool that requires skill to use properly.
Man, as someone who has played through this game at least a dozen times; I can only imagine the amount time and pain this run took. Great job sticking through with it the whole way, you deserve a lot more views and subscribers, especially after this challenge :)
Blade bots get launched by melee attacks sometimes, and deal damage to whatever they hit as they die, that was what damaged the blue warriors in the arena.
Only gotten about 3/4s of the way through the vid for this statement here, but I'm immediately questioning if the holo-shield is just jankily programmed. Any straight angled shot seems to be deflected just fine, but anything that seems to "home in" onto Ratchet either passes through or "jankily" collides with it, hence the boomerang shenanigans.
I actually assume that it only blocks energy based projectiles and due to some PS2 era programming things like flamethrowers don't count as projectiles. Therefore boomerangs and missles go right through, after all it is a holographic shield and both you and the enemies pass through it. They probably programmed specific projectiles to have specific properties yet may have forgot to change some projectiles properties either way.
I want to predict: It's possible, but Daxx's warship, Annihilation Nation's Scorpio and Metropolis Klunk are going to be a pain and we're going to grind holo-shield to Lv5 on Veldin section 2? Though I'm curious to see which wrench speedtricks are being utilized ;3
I cant get enough of this game since I played it dozen of times and it still is one of the greatest games ever made in my opinion, + in combination with your challenges its just a BIG W that i found you. Keep it up you doing amazing. :) :)
You have a great presence for a small channel and some pretty decent editing and sound quality for what I'm presuming is limited equipment, so you're doing great. This challenge was fun and I *had* to watch it as soon as I saw what it was about because having gone through this game like six million times, the thought of trying to do it with only the Holoshield sounded beyond painful. Maybe if this was Deadlocked you could pull that off--and that might be a worthwhile challenge in and of itself--but on R&C 3 I knew immediately the places where you'd be stonewalled and I was right. One slight bit of constructive criticism for your video editing: the volume on the explosive effects you used for the triple jump bit was overly loud compared to the rest of the video, in a way that didn't feel intentional; might want to be more careful about the volume mixing. I'm gonna check out other stuff of yours too and probably subscribe because I like seeing small channels like yours have a good chance to succeed, and I think you've got it. You clearly have the enthusiasm and the wherewithal, you just need a big break.
What a delightfully absurd run. Thank you, you insane man. What about a round 2 with all normal mode preparations? Or a normal mode run on the PS3 version where you can use a debug code to get the weapon right away on Veldin? Even just as a theory-crafting video i’d love to see it
If I ever get a PS3, I may do some re-testing. I've already theory-crafted a way to turn Blackwater from a 'maybe' to a 'definitely', so it could be interesting if the time comes
@@matticusomega Pretty sure the trilogy itself is actually the main expense, PS3s are crazy cheap if you look preowned. I'd kick in for that tho. PS3 opens up a few new opportunities for shenanigans and silly runs.
Honestly I feel like the Holoshield would be a lot more likeable if it were even 50% wider, it's just too small to be useful when enemies moving even the slightest bit will make the shield useless.
@@ibmm3358 I found it very useful, it was set on a timer rather than damage dealt to it and lasted a long time, it was great against enemy landstalkers, plus it was really easy to upgrade, unfortunately it's bugged in the PS3 version since it can't apply elemental effects on enemies who walk through it.
Itd be fun to see the devs reaction to this video and the gloves funky properties lol. Maybe mike stout or tony garcia would have a story about this weird thing's creation
RaC3 reuses a bunch of tracks from previous games. Like you said, the Annihilation Nation arena theme is the theme from Planet Aranos in RaC2 after escaping the prison. Other notable entries are: the Annihilation Nation boss theme is the theme from the ship segment on Pokitaru from RaC1, the Command Center theme is the theme from the ship segment on Drek's Fleet in RaC1, and the Crash Site theme is the theme of the Blargian Snagglebeast fight on Umbris, once again, in RaC1
Also, a song listed on the RaC3 soundtrack as an unused track for the Vid-Comics is the theme of the Grind Boot segment from Batalia in, and you'll never believe this, RaC1. 🤣
Since you did this run, maybe we could do the upgraded form of this run. Can you beat Ratchet: Deadlocked with only the Holo Shield Launcher* *The Opening mission maybe a mission failed and there's challenges that make you swap weapons
Okay so, prediction from before the Premiere. I don't know when you end up getting the Holoshield Glove. I assume some early parts of the game would be near impossible without any method of attacking, so I'm going to assume Matt's going to start the game off with a Holoshield Glove in their inventory already. Holoshield's can't deal damage to enemies immediately iirc and the process of levelling it up is a painful slog at first, but it can damage enemies after getting a few levels. My only fear is that there might be some object that needs to be destroyed that can't take damage from Holoshields. I assume it can be done if Matt has the Holoshield Glove from the get-go. I'm a bit less optimistic if they don't. Oh also, I don't remember how much damage Holoshields do. This could take a while. Reaction after watching. Oh my god, I completely forgot about how counter shots worked! I thought they just struck anything nearby for added DPS. I completely forgot that it requires a projectile to trigger the effect. Oh and also it's inconsistent because of course it is lmao
I tried doing my own research on this, but ultimately didn't get too far, even with the resources on speedrun.com and the like. Best bet may be just to join the RaC speedrunning discord server and ask there
Its garbage as a weapon, but in certain situations it *is* decent at keeping you alive, especially when you hit V5 and get the health drain for it. In the really long Annihilation Nation rounds that health steal can extend how long I can go without health crates by a decent bit if I farm a few enemies for health.
If there's enough interest, I'll invest in an old PS3 and redo this challenge that way. I do think the Challenge Mode setup is kinda intersesting though, if only just to see how many hoops I can jump through 😂
