- his week’s Urban Valor episode features retired Marine First Sergeant, Nelson Coburn. Nelson grew up in Brooklyn, NY. His biological father spent most of his life in prison, which ultimately took his life. Nelson spent approximately 22 years in the Marines. He began as a mortarman and served as a Drill Instructor, Marine Security Guard, Scout Sniper Platoon Sergeant, and Personal Security Detail for the Commanding General. Nelson repeatedly found himself in trouble throughout his enlistment, but always managed to work his way out. After sustaining a training injury, Nelson woke up in the middle of surgery to two Corpsman drilling a metal rod through his knee, which was supposed to end his military career. However, Nelson’s determination to stay in the Marine Corps beat the doctor’s odds.
Was watching this video before bed last night and it didn't register that he looked familiar. Then I woke up this morning to work on a college paper, and his face popped up in my head, so I went back to this video to see his name. Turns out he was my Company 1st Sgt in 2018 when I was in Kilo 3222. Talk about an awesome guy. He was like a dad to us. Love seeing his face again!
❤❤❤❤
I was just thinking Holy Shit! I didnt anything wtf!!!
Lmao I was sleep in barracks on echo company side the night the TV hit the deck I forgot all about that til he told that story
The words that come to mind listening to this Marine. Authentic, mature, professional, responsible, dedicated, humble, determined, IQ, EQ, capable, integrity, resolute, perseverance, to name a few. One heck of a gentleman. Would have made a superior SGM/CSM.
NJP'd twice, gets out as a First Sergeant. Fucking motivating right there. Your Marines were lucky to have you looking after them.
Hey I’m 37 never joined the service, but really enjoy listening to all these stories. One thing I noticed is when someone says they’re a cook, rifleman, gunner, sniper…. I feel like there’s no judgment. I don’t know I’m just impressed by that.. I guess everyone feels equal
Stay strong brother
We do it for our Shipmates.
One of my 1stSgt's, humble, and one of the finest warriors I know! Great job gentlemen! #lrlkm
That's a fucking First Sergeant right there!
"You're not Bo jackson"
"You're goddamn right I'm not."
To come from such a difficult background and become this gentleman, tough obviously, but he looks like a Wall Street Trader, Banker. Love the Marines for providing such a great life education and a home for sharp people from tough backgrounds. I know many who came in from ageing out of foster care.👍✌️
Right On!!! You got it!
This is such a phenomenal interview!
Thank you 🙏🏼
This interviewer sounds like the California kid from REMEMBER THE 25 military video on RUclips
WOW!!! The Corp's Loss! The MOST INTERESTING interview so far. And Im watching THEM.ALL!!!
The TV story doesn't surprise me. Barracks parties with infantry Marines are insane. Definitely good times tho.
They are not natural
The amount of 2nd story bombs onto beer pong tables in horno on Pendleton is wiiiiild
@@xinitialc damn right
Awesome interview. Thank you for your service as a veteran and your honest commitment to your Corps /core values. Rock on ,God bless . As a Cold War vet its great to see n hear how much the military has evolved . Three generations of career Servicemen in my family. You spoke about spouses and family support . You would be an excellent candidate for a DoD consultant regarding addressing that issue. Maybe as an incentive for retention provide some additional family support. .. Just saying.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY MARINES THANKS 👍
I think we crossed paths at some point. I think it may have been BLT 2/6. I was in 10th Marines, Lima Battery FDC OPS Chief. Maybe Fort AP Hill. I also was in Helmand in 2010 for the Marjeh push. Anyway I retired in 2015 and spent 12 of my 20 years at Lejeune. Anyway, Semper Fi. Our stories sound identical. During amd post military. It is hard getting out. You dont realize you will miss those things that we know as pains in the asses. Only difference is I did recruiting duty. I have worked for the Post Office for 6 years and it is hard being " nice" lol
Got a very close family member that served in Iraq and has been working for the post office for a while now just thought it was kinda funny but hey I’m sure you have had to heard the damn commercials about being at camp lejeune during I think a period of time that stopped somewhere in the 80s and have almost any type of medical issue that can be connected you probably can get you a settlement
@@RealDeal458 I joined in 95
I love these interviews with these amazing Americans.
He looks like he could be a VP in Fortune 500 company. Warrior and a true gentleman. I love this channel!
thank you both great listen.
Lance Corporal! It's a fine rank! I've held it many times. My first Sgt. in Oki send a kid to CCU at Camp Hanson and those boys do not play. He was there for 3 months, and when he came back he was not right in the head. I got out in 94 and hazing was really bad. Especially in the field. I got out after one enlistment because the Marine Corps did look after me. I gave everything to them for the time I was in and they didn't do the same for me. No hard feelings, but I would probably would've stayed if they hadn't inflated the cutting score with people that had been out of my MOS for two years.
Excellent interview with Nelson! Very insightful. I learned more in 1 hour than I did when I’m eating & drinking with Nelson! 🍻
**Great job Joshua!**
It was an interesting interview. Nelson speaks with complete honesty. What he has been through before life in the Marines, during, including getting into trouble (shit happens to many of us, no one is perfect), and when he was forced out. The high divorce rate is a known fact. There are many in the Marines who do not possess those therapeutic and counseling skills and insights to even touch the base of divorce and other issues affecting Marines and their families. A great deal of the "unnecessary stresses" is caused by the Marine Corps. Why pretend this is not the case. Many Marines have alcohol dependency issues. Many have and many will get into some trouble while serving. I did my four years in the Marines, in the Infantry, and I seen a lot. I seen enough to know I was not staying in. I almost reenlisted but the paperwork was screwed up, and decided against staying in. The Marines don't need to change, why should they? The reality is sometimes certain leadership doesn't acknowledge problems because they don't know how to address the problems. The hazing in the Marines is pure bullshit. I never got hazed but heard about some of the stupidity that went on. One thing that hazing is not, is Normal. Nelson even said, people go overboard with hazing. An Army Vietnam veteran once quoted, "It was a million dollar experience and I wouldn't repeat it for a nickel." The Marine Corps has a lot to reform, especially with how certain personalities are formed, from good to something else. It takes time. It may happen.
Awesome as usual !,
This guy served the same yrs as my brother and even retired. I wonder if they ever met
My son is at MCT in San Diego right now happy too find this channel...
Deeply grateful for and to you
Love this story. Respect !!~
My dad culture shocked me as a youngin. Went from first world USA to third world parts of Mexico. What a ride!
Great channel.
My man’s suit can barely contain his guns. Clearly he’s still getting after it.
Very cool 1st Sgt right there ladies and gents
This GW1 Corpsman 🫡
That's wild you can get sgt in 4 years in the USMC, in our military it takes most guys 4-5ish years to reach the equivalent of a corporal in the corps

Great last words.
That doesn’t just apply to the military, but life in general, so that was very good. Most times they only direct their last words to other people in the military, which is understandable, but this is something anyone can take from.
I'll never forget in the early 90s my grandma had toys for me when i would come visit. Green army men with a landscape map and i would pretend they where having close quarters battle and would knock them over and then use the mortar strike figurines to end it😂
This guy is a badass. Was DI when I was a recruit. Bad ass DI.
Steel rain!!!!
Without a doubt it is more scary to have someone deployed than it is to be deployed
How so?
@@retrovcr777 you know your situation, obviously. People who have not been there think it's private Ryan every day. Don't get me wrong taking fire puckers the asshole but you know the situation as it unfolds
What a Legend!!
PT the next morning is real fun after picking up Corporal, get some
I served in the marines from 2015-2019 and I can attest that blood stripping is still a thing well at least it was when I was In
Great story, much respect 🤙🏻
Hey I live I. Grants pass!!!
He is like Congressman Harold Ford, who's on Fox, The Five
Don’t do him like that.
I am Panamanian and get the same shit my best friends were from or 3rd gen marine from laurdale lol
the BEST leaders the marine corps has are the shit bags. the best leaders i ever had had njps, duis, busted down to e1 you name it. one of my primary mentors and team leaders was looked down on by all of the higher ups but he was legit one of the most influential and best leaders i had the privilege of learning from and it shaped me into the leader i knew i needed to be, a lot of my peers were the heavy handed ass hole types and their boots feared them rather than respected them, my guys knew that i would suffer with them, do what i tell you to do but if you have questions ask, if you have problems, come talk to me, issues at home or back home, come talk to me, id rather stay up all night talking with you and keeping your head on striaght rather than have you go UA or go out and get a DUI or doing something stupid. i was medically retired due to injuires sustained on my first deployment and i have a lot of regret for not going on that 2nd pump with them, i have a lot of guilt about it but like everything else ive learned to accept it. i have a family now and kids and i try to be that leader and role model for them.
Let’s go!!!!
Half Hawaiian? Dad was a native Hawaiian islander? I didnt think it was thing.
The Marines…where guys who haven’t been to combat…are combat instructors…
The Army, where Guys who wear Ranger Tabs aren’t really Rangers.
He taught Combat tactics. Virtually Any well-trained infantryman could do that.
@@Marine1truthTheir job Title is Combat Instructor…LOL
Combat tactics by someone who’s never been to combat…Thats like a Virgin teaching classes about sex…(any well trained virgin can do that) HAHAHA
That fact alone sums up the Marine Corps…
And a Ranger tab is no joke to get…you’re Ranger qualified if you have a tab…(a black and yellow tab above the unit patch upon completion of Ranger school) who is now known as a Tabbed Ranger…
The Ranger Battalions (1st,2nd,and 3rd) are in Jsoc and they are called Battalion Rangers…That’s the Ranger Unit Patch (black white and red scroll)
That’s a lot of information for a marine to process…I’m faithful you can do it by reading it a few times LOL ;)
Thank you Nelson ❤🙏
Why the world with the Marines want to keep a screw up like
Nowadays Veteran's are storming the Capitol.
Trump has sh!t on veterans so many times, and yet some service members love to tongue his starfish. Curious. Very curious.
Totally stole Mark from Soft White Underbelly production style. Same people run around whining about Stolen Valor. Zero creativity.
Maybe but he’s not lacking in views because of it . I watch both daily. Enjoy your day my man
@@romie426 Maybe? He jacked the whole format.
@@TankDavisConquers I understand but most of us aren’t here because of the format. At least I’m not. I’m here to listen to the stories of his guests. If anything I’m pissed that I didn’t do it before he did.
@@romie426 You don't want to be like the guy behind this. You can do it based on your own creativity. You can still do it.
To be fair, soft white underbelly's "production format" is nothing but a guy behind a camera, interviewing someone in front of the camera. Mark even said that his style is always centered around simplicity and minimalism, which is an easy production philosophy to abide by for anyone. It's just easy to do.
LOL when he corrected himself for saying first sarnt yup that when i knew
