Gfriend has been inactive for 3 years and they are still in the top 4 female groups with the most music show wins (71 wins). Gfriend comes from such a small company but they were able to compete with other girl groups from big companies and also were able to enter the top 5 of the 3rd gen girl groups known as TREBLMAYEO (twice, rv, bp, mamamoo, yeojachingu/gfriend).
I think the concept of a Shallow Dive series is a really good one as you can get a taste of lots of groups to see which ones you like a lot and perhaps deep dive into next year. A fun fact is that Yuju is a fan girl of G-IDLE and GFriend members were always teasing her about it saying she never listens to their own songs but is obsessed with those of G-IDLE instead. For GFriend in particular I would recommend that a dance practice video was included in the review of f a song. They are renowned for their dancing more than any other group of their generation and contributed a lot to their success.
Thankyou for including gfriend in this series! Yess Yuju is our main vocalist. She's also the ost queen as currently she is the 3rd gen female idol with the most ost (16 osts)
Yuju is THAT vocalist. She is one of the best vocalists in kpop. My favourite part of her voice is her resonance. She has got a very thick resonance in her voice. Which is very hard to find among kpop.
Ya Yuju is the main vocal of the group and probably one of the best vocalists in Kpop. She has since gone solo and had a few releases that are really good as well.
Yuju is the Golden Member of GFriend. If you watch their guide you would see that she is good at everything and hence why she got this nickname. But she excels at singing above everything. Now she has a solo career and she has improved her vocal range and technique a lot whilst finally getting the chance to write her own songs and compose her own music. She even opened the Seoul Music Awards show earlier this year singing live whilst pole dancing on a 10 foot pole! Eunha is the lead vocal and supports Yuju being lead vocal on most of GFriend’s songs.
Rough is classic GFriend with its orchestral strings and heavy electric guitar dance break. They won 15 music shows with this song which is only one off the all time record. This was the first win for them so it was a very emotional milestone in their careers. It is the final song in their school trilogy which typifies their brand of powerful innocence.
I am just happy to see new Gfriend content. You can choose whatever format you prefer. It's funny to see you smile during "Rough" but, as you explained in advance, the scenes were foretold in Mamamoo's "Showtime" cover. Gfriend debuted with "Glass Bead", followed by "Me Gustas Tu" and "Rough". This is their school trilogy that launched them into stardom. Their concept was known as "Powerful Innocence" as their music clearly bursts with youthful and joyful energy, as well as an innocent outlook towards the future. Their music during this era makes me reminisce over the bygone years of my own youth. Far from the traditional cute and fresh genre in kpop, Gfriend's sound is unique with its use of instrumental, and particularly the string elements. Many describe their sound as orchestral pop with its instrumental and dramatic impact as you noted. Mamamoo and Gfriend were both groups known for their vocal and live performances in 3rd gen. Yuju is a true vocal phenom with her special tone and explosive power. You have experienced yourself in "Rough". You will see even more display of her prowess in other Gfriend songs later. The members are simply adorable for both the demeanor and mindset as you have come to learn. It is my sincere hope that you discover the special appeal of their music and choreography as well with your shallow dive series.
Doesn't matter how many times I've heard this song, it still slaps! That e-guitar goes so hardd Gfriend have their unique concept of powerful innocence which translates to their instrumentals as well as their dance ^^ I hope you check out their live performaces too, they have amazing live vocals considering how intense their dance is. Thanks for reacting!
Great stuff! Gfriend is a lot of middle school memories for me 😢 A small suggestion, maybe after the tracks you wanted to check out, you could watch the dance practices for those songs? I feel like with Gfriend you’d be missing out on one of their best features without it. Regardless great reaction! I’m a long-time Moomoo who has watched all your stuffs
Okay, im really happy that you are getting into them, so some things ao you can know a little bit a bout them. 1. Gfriend music is well known as sentimental orchestra. This means that you should wait from them amazing instrumentals, full of feelings. They also use a lot the guitars, so you can REALLY wait for it. 2. This song is part of their school trilogy, and its the end of it, being "glass bead" the beginning and the hope of a child, "me gustas tu" the happiness of a teenager and "rough" the sadness that comes with becoming adults, and leaving behind young loves, friends and school. 3. Gfriend has a lore, and its really important but not the main goal of Gfriend music, as in reality its represents how the members and find themselves in the industry and the world, and becomes womans with confidence and self esteem. Gfriend concept started with power innocence, but as they grow up they changed it to become confident womans and thats is represented in their music and their story. Waiting for more.
GFriend has a lot of good songs! I'm so happy you're doing these shallow dives! I hope you can react to a lot of other good groups! I love Purple Kiss so I hope you give them a try too, they're pretty underrated but they have an excellent discography, I think you'll love them
I’m hoping that it gives us a chance to check out a variety of groups! Some ones that I want to get to in no particular order: OneUs, Oh My Girl, Kiss of Life, XG, Purple Kiss, TxT, Day6, Everglow and the list keeps growing every day 😂
Actually according to Gfriend's lore, the lyrics are not even about romantic feelings. A lot of their lyrics center their friendship with each other. If you ever get to it, I would suggest looking into their story. But no rush, you can just enjoy the music and personalities rn
Yes they had an innocent vibe in their earlier days but underneath that there was always an undercurrent of power/intensity and a touch of melancholy which is what set them apart for me. Their music also has similar appeal to that of dreamcatcher’s, which is why these 2 are my only ult groups in all of K-pop.
Rough actually more like love in different time loops. The girl was travelling love back to high school but they can't be together since they in different world. "Im not able to say, but I love you""Hoping you not changed" "i will always wait" tell that they will waiting them on their time, hoping the feeling not changed
A few years ago, there was an evaluation of third gen girl group vocalists that seemed to be thorough and unbiased. It didn't look at soloists or second or fourth gen. The top five ended up being 1 Wendy, 2 Wheein, 3 Solar, 4 Yuju, and 5 Hawsa. There were comments saying Yuju had been as high as 2 or 3 but because they pushed her to sing so many high notes, her voice had regressed. Gfriend made good music, but they concentrated on their dancing skills. I think they have a copyright for the term, knifelike choreography. The double speed dances on Weekly Idol were invented to try to get Gfriend to mess up. They were still flawless.
this is what people say is similar to Dreamcatcher/ Or gfriend is similar to Dreamcatcher... in my opinion there is no similarity at all. Even if it's similar in any part, I couldn't find it. In my opinion, Gfriend is more like Twice, groups ending in 48, g-idle, like that. But just because there are piano and string instruments, it's still similar to Dreamcatcher... if only Evanescence also used piano and strings 😅

'Rough' is the first song by 3rd gen group to get PAK / Perfect All Kill (total 66 PAKs). This song also got a triple crown with 15 music show wins.

Her voice is stellar!

her voice is amazing! like I was floored lol

Agreed!
Gfriend & Dreamcatcher are like each side of a coin. Light and Dark version.
Exactly!

oh yes after Dreamcatcher, Gfriend!!! they are both my fave groups its like yin and yan for music 😁
I can definitely see the similarities!
Yuju is the one hitting the high notes. Eunha is the one with long hair in early days and have a short hair later.
