one thing people forget is the use of libraries. My local library is paid for by my taxes, and has a vast collection of movies, and you can make requests. They will often legally acquire requests and you can check them out and rip them. Dubious legality, but at least your tax money would be used indirectly to pay for the copy you are ripping.

In many places, You actually do have the right to backup your DVDs for personal use. But as you said, it does become highly illegal when you share the media.

Fun Fact about Canada's laws. Due to things like VCRs back in the day, our laws are written that it is ok to have, record, share and watch media for personal use. It only gets illegal if you profit from someone else's work. So if I download a movie and make a DVD copy for a buddy it is fine. If I charge him a dollar for the DVD it becomes very illegal.

Okay, so, sharing ripped DVD's is bad, but is it still possible to do use Rabbit to watch online with friends if the thing isn't public? (my friend and I live in different states and Netflix, etc doesn't have the right stuff

“So old it no longer holds any value” - that’s not true. If it’s old, chances are the copyright has lapsed and therefore no longer protected and has been released into the public domain. It does NOT mean it holds no value.

    • @rustykoenig2167
      @rustykoenig2167 3 года назад

"OLD" means NOTHING! As long as someone holds an up to date "copyright" on it.... it is still JUST as "protected"........ It goes into "public domain" when the copyright expires and nobody pays renew the copyright..... after so long it is released to the public...
If you think about it... all the domain names on the internet work the exact same way too... you buy a domain name.... you now own that "name".... you have to renew the "lease" on that name to "secure" it for another length of time where you still "own" it..... If one day you don't pay to renew it.... it sits in limbo for a little while because they give you a chance to reclaim it.... so you still KIND OF own it without owning it...... after a "grace period" the name is then released to the public domain again. People actually hunt for those names that get expired and released to the public and snatch them up quicker than you can blink...... if you forgot about it.... and when you remember you need to renew it.... its already gone.... sitting for sale at a jacked up price hoping you will want it back.....
One GOOD example of this..... just had a pretty big legal "battle" ....... over a stupid little song..... that pretty much EVERY human on EARTH knows.... you hear it once a year..... and each time it becomes other people's once a year thing..... but this song is RARELY sung in any kind of production or public form other than personal gatherings...... The one who held the copyright on it.... made roughly $2Million a YEAR off of charging people to "sing" it publicly.... despite the fact that EVERYONE does their OWN version of the song and sings THAT for free.... they STILL pulled 2 MILLION a year from it...... Everyone from Mr. Rogers to the small family restaurant that sings it to you when you go out to eat for your birthday..... they never do the "universally known version" they do their OWN version of it.... or they would have to pay Warner Music $1,200 or up to 6 figures to sing HAPPY BIRTHDAY to you at your dinner!!!!...... The courts did rule the WORDS were not copyrighted as there is no record of the "lyrics" that evolved with the "tune" but they did not say "public domain" because it was believed to have started back in the 1800's..... they said "public domain" because there was no record of the LYRICS being covered by the "copyright" only the TUNE was "protected" as it was first played as a piano arrangement.
      ruclips.net/video/vNUaqGLIx2k/видео.html&feature=emb_logo
      priceonomics.com/who-owns-the-copyright-to-happy-birthday/
.......... Actually I like the way the Chinese feel about "patents" and "intellectual property".... If someone "invents" something new they do not run to the patent clerk as fast as humanly possible to patent it.... pretty much as soon as they "create" or "invent" the thing, it is "open source" and "public domain". They don't spend their time and effort to "protect" something..... if their neighbor takes their "invention" and recreates it (usually improving on it, even a little bit) it only gets better and it becomes a "collective creativeness" that pretty much benefits everyone..... and they still make $$$ selling not only the the thing THEY invented but also the "improvements" others make on it as well.
Everyone who bashed on products that were dubbed as "Chinese knock offs" or "Chinese Counterfeit" products.... are the ones who fight to stop true development and improvement......
Think about it..... One of the Biggest, Wealthiest, Mega Giant empires on EARTH besides the "bankers" are the OIL companies......
back in the 1700's they were going after whales and hunting them to extinction..... You never really heard about whale meat being a popular "dish" at a restaurant back then..... but what you DID hear about is all the "oil" they filled their lamps up with..... and that oil came almost exclusively from WHALE fat. The "OIL" company started out killing shit for the "oil" they sold.... then when the "public" drew the line because they were all but extinct.... they outlawed whale hunting..... so what did the OIL companies do? Instead of killing shit for oil they discovered they could just harvest the OIL from already DEAD shit that have created vast amounts of OIL in the ground!!!! So once again, they do whatever they need to do to "extract" it. As time went on.... we figured out how to use this OIL to lubricate our new "machines" that ran off of water..... they burned more old dead shit that turned into hard carbon.... or coal..... or burn living shit they directly cut down as wood to HEAT the water...... but the engines started off being driven by WATER..... So once the "machine" age started to take off.... the OIL companies figured out they could actually RUN the machines as FUEL! Along the way people have had revolutionary ideas that were delibrately and COMPLETELY silenced as they buy up the "patens" on it and lock them away so NOBODY ever really gets to "see" these ideas..... because..... they have to keep extracting more and more of this "OIL" and these ideas would be the END of their exploitation.
So...... here we are in modern times..... We are living in a time where Humans have progressed more in the last 100 years than we have in the last 100,000 YEARS!!!! Just about EVERY aspect of our lives, of the world we live in has been totally and utterly TRANSFORMED, Even today we are witnessing the "digital" age shift that has and will very QUICKLY evolve faster and faster as we innovate beyond imagination.......So...... why the FUCK are the "OIL" companies STILL here doing the SAME SHIT they have been doing since before electricity was even harnessed? They are still filling our tanks with their crap that they have not even really "developed"...... It would be like Bill Gates building his Empire on the back of "DOS" and after all these years...... STILL selling DOS!!!!! but at a HUGE increase in price for the same product he created when his company began..... We could not IMAGINE dos being our interface to the operation of our computers today...... To put it into perspective..... you have to totally abandon EVERYTHING except for DOS..... you can now only use DOS in your computer.... We would not even THINK about getting rid of what we use today..... even the "Linux" users..... no more Linux.... only command line driven interface PERIOD!...... So..... why then..... do we still use OIL from the fucking OIL companies to run our cars..... they don't even INNOVATE.... they just keep selling the same bullshit they have been selling since they almost killed every whale on earth.....
Imagine if the one who created a way to run a car engine of of WATER..... if his "idea" was not buried under the bullshit "copyright" and "paten" crap that never even protected HIM..... it protected the one who ran to the counter first to pay for the RIGHT to OWN an IDEA! and they decided that Idea that would revolutionize the WORLD is bad for "their business"........
This engine that ran off "water"..... did not run on "water", you put water in the tank, but then the tank separated the water into its component parts...... oxygen and hydrogen..... H20..... and used most of it as the hydrogen was collected used to ignite and run the engine while the oxygen "exhaust" was released out the tail pipe..... We should be running on cheaply produced hydrogen fueled cars instead of running our cars with the ancient and obsolete DOS operating sytem........ Bill and Steve..... even had their OWN war as they fought to keep "innovation" from moving forward...... but instead of producing the same old bullshit over and over and over and spending their energy and effort on stopping anyone else from "innovating"...... and guess what??? Even with the innovation we have now.... just imagine if they did not tie up shit in the courts over "copyright infringement" how far our operating system would be now if he allowed his competition to freely use and improve upon it instead of trying to be the ONLY one who could "own" it?
The whole "public domain" or "copyrighted" or "paten" ideology is saying i THOUGHT of it FIRST therefore you are not ALLOWED to think of it....... and only I can benefit from my THOUGHT that could make the world in general better.... but instead it can only make MY LIFE better, and of coarse any other who has enough MONEY to pay ME, then their life can be a little better by using my THOUGHT or IDEA!!! The rest of the world has to wait until I squeeze as much out of it as I possibly can before you can start to THINK of MY IDEA and begin to actually use it to make the thing i THOUGHT of.
Did you know that even in a college class...... if you take a class more than once..... you can not use ANY of your work that YOU did YOURSELF the second time through??? I read it in their "rules"....... SO.... even the product of your OWN mind is no longer YOURS to use and will be considered the SAME as if you copied someone else's work and turned it in.... the penalty is exactly the same if you used someone else work as your own..... even when it is your OWN WORK!!!!
So..... you invented the wheel yesterday.... but since you are taking this "cart building class" again.... your "wheel" is OFF LIMITS because you cannot COPY someone else's WORK..... even it was YOUR work yesterday...... I guess we have to push the cart with a SQUARE wheel now?......

Thank you for this video, I am starting a plex server and hold the mentality that you should pay for something you believe in. I have a collection of dvd's and blu-ray's that I want in digital form. Basically I plan on only having copies of product's that I have paid for in advance and will not share them. I had an extensive ultra-violet account however the majority of my copies were lost on the servers, partly my fault partly theirs. So I plan on ripping the lost content and only holding it for personal use. I don't know the technicality of legal term's here however I feel as if I am holding the core value's of DRM true so I'm not worried. Again thank you, I will save this video for later reference once I have a server going.

Psittac20 just download DVD fab and copy most of your movies!
it's a legal purchase and works great! I recommend keeping a receipt of all your movie purchases even if you buy them at a pawn shop just in case!! if you present a receipt to the judge for all your movies he will probably dismiss your case!!

    • @Psittac20
      @Psittac20 7 лет назад

jurnagin Thank you for the head's up, sometimes you need to rely on a moral code when it comes to the internet and digital thing's. I think the only argument which could be made against my plan would be I am potentially hurting ultra-violet or amazon etc sales. To which I guess I'm going to figure that UV and other digital media wasn't present when purchasing most of my content, and the ones that did have it available, I figured would give no benefit. Maybe I'll have to give a second though to future purchases as to the availability for UV etc. Again thank you for the advice.

Psittac20 another thing I didn't mention is that you really have to be careful when getting brand new movies!! don't get them through a p2p program!! because movie studios are cracking down on unlawful downloads!!
and don't get movies that people put on disks!! especially the new releases!! but again keep a place to keep all movie receipts organized if you have 1500 movies then you should have a corresponding receipt!

jurnagin oh my pirate day's are long gone. I was on the original napster. Today I have the means to put my dollar's behind things I believe in. Also so many year's back my sister had disk's from a friend that were probably IRC downloads burned onto a disc, and they were unwatchable. It's not just a white knight standpoint, rather I have learned from pirating and understand that putting my money where it belong's has value. I don't mess with any of that kind of stuff these day's.

Thank you for making this video. Even though my reason for watching was to put my DVD and Bluray movies on Plex and this video didn't answer it other than to google it...It goes to show that DRM is pretty much BS. To give a specific example my original disk of Zombieland I have on Bluray COMES with a digital copy disk you can use on your PC. HOWEVER you have to connect to a website to put in a code and activate that digital copy...the website no longer exists. This goes to show that no matter what, eventually every DRM laden piece of data will become useless at some point...especially if you have to activate it over the internet.

What about dowloaded content from RUclips?
There are tools (websites and I think programs to do so).
If I download a cartoon from RUclips, that is then subject to a take down, as occurs frequently: how likely is that my dowloading would be traced and I'm subject to some fines or worse for having the downloaded content.
I think this is at worst, a 3 maybe, but iquiring minds want to know.

Technically it is not against the law to make backups of your legally purchased media ;) no copyright law prevents a user from making a back up or using your owned media after all you bought it, secondly copyrights are intended for those illegally downloading it also remember recording a movie on VHS? Ya that was a copyright infringement but no actual way to prove that back then. Thirdly use a VPN.

In DMCA Section 1201 there is allowance for personal use but it only applies to content that you legally own. Its not known if Plex reports to anyone, the government has been serving companies with gag orders so they cant tell the public that they are providing a backdoor in the software so you can be monitored. There are several reports in the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times about this subject.

Sharing copyrighted Music/Video is what will get you in trouble!! I used to broadcast on a Internet Radio Station. We had to close the door, when the Licensing fee jumped from 25 dollars a month to 60 Plus dollars a month. Why? Because the standard for Broadcasting Radio is Terrestrial (AM-FM Radio Market) There isn't a updated Digital Standard as far as I know. Because Digital Listeners can be counted as 1 TLH (Total Listening Hour) which works out to 0.003 cents a listener. So say you have a total of 6 listeners to a 3 hour radio show over a month. Your total would cost you around $4.23 cents 4 weeks x 3 hours a week = 12 total listener hours x avg 6 = $2.16 cents at 0.03 cents for each listener. But you use that same math for a FM station that has a Market share of 120,000 people that number gets real fast. Hence why FM stations per hour run more Commercials per hour than actual Music...

    • @rustykoenig2167
      @rustykoenig2167 3 года назад +1

No..... they actually PAY people to to "pirate" their own stuff..... they hire employees to sit there and download their OWN files from "pirate" sites..... which they then have access to a list of IP Addresses of those peers that have "shared" any portion of the file they downloaded..... they then take that list of IP's and sort through them and send them off to the ISP who provided the customer with the "service" they used to "pirate" THEIR property..... the ISP then are pressured to "do something about it" and implement a escalating system of "harshness" on them..... Basically saying they know its bullshit..... but the more we have to deal with THEM the more you have to deal with US and if it becomes a routine thing (dealing with them and you) you lose your service and if it is one of those "make an example out of you case" then you just got hit by that meteor that fell from space and landed on your head!
If you download ANYTING from a torrent..... you cannot NOT upload any..... while you download you WILL be uploading some of it back to them.... Pretty sure there isn't a torrent program out there today that let you set your upload to absolute ZERO. Even if it is only a few bytes a second or even 1-2kb a second, you WILL be uploading some of it back to the "community". I remember when you could actually disable completely the upload option and literally download stuff with ZERO upload going out.... they did away with that option a LONG time ago.
Even if you get the whole file and only upload 1 single BYTE of it back to the community..... and that ONE SINGLE BYTE went to one of those "employees" who get on there and download their own stuff.... that is 1 letter to your ISP because you have "shared" it illegally.
I remember the days when NOBODY said SHIT about ANY of it....... A cop would pull you over for some bullshit.... walk up and look in your car... and you would have a huge box or a huge PILE of those "blank cassette tapes" and all of them with hand written labels on them..... I mean.... you KNOW what it is... there isn't even an ARGUMENT you can even TRY to have about it...... I mean.... I guess I love hearing my own VOICE so much, I have to have it covering all these HOURS of recorded tape..... or I am fucking stupid and can't remember what I said 2 minutes ago so I need that much "notes" recorded in voice to remind me ? LOL!!!! Back then, you had a MOUNTAIN of copied cassette tapes, whole BOOK CASES full of copied movies onto them blank VHS tapes..... and then you had the COMPANIES that made a FORTUNE selling us the "contraband" to RECORD it on..... blank VHS tapes were around a while before the hand held camera or "camcorder" become a "thing"...... recording movies off live TV.... getting 2 VCR and recording the original tape as it played off live TV..... then came the VCR with DUAL tape slots to go directly from tape to tape.... So... what are you going to do with 2 VHS tape slots on 1 VCR?.... You cannot copy 2 TV channels playing at the same time..... it was designed to copy a tape from a tape.....
So.... all of a sudden, after YEARS and YEARS of NOBODY saying ANYTHING about the PLAGUE of those blank tapes with hand written labels on them..... and now its a serious "crime" ?? Back then, the record companies STILL made their ungodly HUGE fortunes..... and the artists made THEIR ungodly HUGE fortunes...... The thing is...... all that "pirated" "illegal" media.... did not "take $$ away" from them.... it was free advertising..... They record a couple songs.... the record company cut a few albums or "tapes" and sell them to the retailers, make a fortune..... then the retailer sells them to the public and make a fortune..... then the public takes them and makes a BILLION copies of them and "pass them around"...... NOW when that "artist" comes around to do a "live show"..... now they dont get those few who BOUGHT and PAID to hear their 8 or so "songs" showing up paying for tickets to their show...... they get the BILLIONS of people who got a "copy" of their original tape they ALREADY made a fortune off of..... and now the "pirates" are filling their STADIUM event instead of them singing to only 1 section of that stadium......
100,000,000 people paying $25 for a seat at their "live show" because they got a "pirated" copy of their 8 songs from a $4-5 cassette tape..... If I was the "artist" or the business that managed that "artist".... I would ENCOURAGE people to "share" the "media" all they want...... A recording on "media" cannot and will not EVER be the same as hearing it live (which is where the BULK of their fortune comes from). Why do you think they all spend so much time and effort to do "live shows"...... because it's "FUN"? The "FUN" wears off REALLY quick..... and once the "FUN" wears off..... they STILL keep spending a big chunk of their lives "on tour"..... because it makes them LOTS of $$$..... The "albums" are really only bragging rights for the artist because the "record companies" gain the most from those.... but the live shows is what TRULY brings in the vast amounts of $$$.
Actually...... I think this whole illegal sharing of media stuff is coming FROM the "record label" companies that are learning that their "profession" is VERY QUICKLY becoming obsolete and no longer needed as a "service". They were once the ONLY way for someone to get their "voice" out to people and it was the RECORD COMPANIES that decided who got to be heard by the public.... and who did NOT get to be heard...... They literally OWNED the "artist" and the artist could not get ANYWHERE without their "service" to take their voice and spam it to MILLIONS of people. Someone who went solo and tried to "advertise" their voice.... were destined to sing bar gig after bar gig for ever. It was almost part of life that to be "heard" you needed to be signed by a record label.......
In todays world...... not only do we have access to a world wide "stage" and audience.... the equipment to "record" the voice and send it out does not cost you an arm and a leg.... then you have to downgrade the thing you paid the arm for so you don't lose BOTH legs!.... It is cheap, and good quality, with a forum and stage that is available to literally ANYONE who has a connection to the internet..... they have a stage that has the WORLD watching for pretty much almost no cost to do it......
The record companies are trying to hold on to end of the rope because they know their "profession" is really no longer needed. So now they are making the big fuss about all of it........
This girl was like around 8 years old..... She did Adelle Rollin in the Deep..... and I actually think she did it better than Adelle did it....
This was like 7 years ago..... but THIS is what the "record labels" fear as their "service" is not no longer needed lol.

But since I have purchased a seedhost in the Netherlands 5 years ago ($10 to $20/month), not one notice. You cue the seedhost to download the torrent and then SFTP the file to your local computer. These seedhosts are extremely fast and offer generous storage, so you can binge and then download to your local drive at your leisure. And this guy is also fear mongering. Yes in the early 2000's companies went after pirates. There was a media backlash, and they stopped. You are basically safe these days unless you are stupid and share. Lets say you "copied" every hard copy you "own" into digital form...... and as time went on, a few get misplaced, some get damaged and thrown away.... and the few friends that "borrowed" a couple and then forgot to UNborrow them and you forgetting they borrowed them..... then there is the couple your dog chewed up..... and.... gotta LOVE those kids....
But..... your "digital copy" remains behind..... and unless you magically have a receipt for those that are magically "not there" anymore....... you now have "illegal contraband" because you now "own" illegal copies of that LEGALLY OWNED media.......
By the way..... before you decide to dump your "collections" into the PLEX platform..... realize that EVERYTHING in your collection is SEEN by them and a whole host of "metadata" is collected and stored on THEIR server...... in order to get to YOUR stuff, served off of YOUR hardware, using YOUR electricity to run it ALL..... you have to go to THEIR domain to "sign in" with your clients to connect to your "server" that is linked to that "gateway". Even in your living room, pulling movies off your server in the next room..... you are forced to go through THEIR gateway to stream it from the next room.
Even the stuff in your collection that you NEVER stream and it just sits there...... the "server" happily sends out to the internet to pull its OWN metadata to "Beautify" your collection and it is all connected to THEIR servers that store all of YOUR metadata......
Edward Snowden explained it simply and plainly..... The NSA collected and stored EVERY SINGLE electronic communications from EVERYONE from EVERYWHERE..... ALL THE TIME!. As he explained it.... they didn't have a full copy of every single conversation or message that was sent..... but.... what they DID have was the "metadata" that it created...... They know who you called, when you called them, how long you talked to them, where you were when you called, where they were when they called, how often or how not often you called them.... but once you get on their "radar" then they can drill down on your life and START automagically collecting 100% full collection of your EVERYTHING.
Netflix uses this same "metadata" to predict your habits and stuff to "serve you" more appealing content from THEIR collection. Plex collects all the same metadata that happens to be forced to travel across their "bridge" they have placed between Server and Client.
Not saying PLEX stores your data for a long time (or even if they actually store it at ALL..... but in modern times.... anyone who treats such metadata as "trash" or "byproduct" their business creates..... is a fool..... data is the new modern "gold" for those who can collect huge amounts of it....) or that they use it for anything other than their own gain and growth and development of their platform to make it even better...... but..... just remember.... EVERYTHING you submit to this platform is SEEN by the platform..... (just like any other media server system you would use)..... but this platform is not contained on just YOUR server and YOUR client..... the data stream is observed by THEIR servers because you cant "request" YOUR stuff unless that "request" goes through THEIR door.
PLEX is by far the best "platform" out there and I don't think anyone else can even begin to touch what PLEX has developed in their platform for personal use..... But..... just remember.... even if you use the FREE version of it..... you pay for it by handing over a COMPLETE inventory list of your collection.... however small or huge it is.....

I have a question? how old does a show have to be before it becomes public domain?

Before the passage of the Copyright Term Extension Act (CTEA) in 1998, the term of copyright in the U.S. was a maximum of 75 years, with the work entering the public domain on January 1 of the 76th year from creation (so, for example, a film made in 1930 whose copyright was properly registered and renewed would enter the public domain on January 1, 2006). Although the CTEA added 20 years to the terms of all existing copyrights, it explicitly refused to revive any copyrights that had expired prior to its passage.
