    • @Turbo_Snail

      I would say the spark with coils are controlled by the computer nowadays. I have insights in all that’s available through hptuners and I’m blown away. Back in the day when things were mechanical any little change made an impact. Today, the computer makes things possible that we can’t even imagine. I doubt that, especially after this test, any coil would make any difference. If you want better fuel efficiency all you have to do is de-tune your car. As I tune for more power, you can go backwards as well. Especially now that fuel is $5 a gallon. Cars today are made to be as efficient as possible with the most power safely possible. Cars in the 80s made 30+mpg but at 80hp. We get 30+mpg at 300+mpg in the USA. Most people in Europe drive diesel cars and even tho they are low hp, they are high torque and still get 50, 60, 70+mpg. Maybe we should start looking at smaller, more fuel efficient cars during times like these.

      Yeah same here. Realistically, the crew was hoping for 5-8hp, but we were floored. The dyno guy was laughing and saying “what did you expect”. Maybe on a boosted car? We ran them twice each and the NGK that we ran in the beginning, which was the weakest, when we re-ran them at the end, they just matched the rest.

    The only question I have is how many miles are on the stock spark plugs? RIPP specifically mentioned changing out to NGK Iridium IX plugs when using their coil packs. They also mention widening the gap to .065. That might be where the power gain came from on their Dyno testing. If your still on your stock plugs, they could be tired. When I pulled mine, some of the electrodes were noticibly worn than others. My car only had 48,000 miles when I swapped them out.

    • @Turbo_Snail
      @Turbo_Snail  4 года назад

      I’ll try to find out. I know the car had around 80k miles. But I think Brian changed the plugs and the coils we tested were stock replacement coils for comparison, not the original old ones.

    Do coils get old or less efficient... (like over 100,000 miles?)
    or do they just stop working all of a sudden?

    • @Turbo_Snail
      @Turbo_Snail  2 года назад

      The coils either work or they don't. That being said, good quality coils should last you basically forever. I had a FIAT 500 and had 2 coil failures within the first 60k miles. Even then, you replace only the failed one. Coils fail as the insulation breaks down. You'll get arcing and it stops working. My sons Mercedes is still on original coils at 155k miles, my 200 is on originals at 58k miles. I understand there is/was a high failure rate on RIPP coils but haven't heard anything from other manufacturers. So, my advice, if it ain't broke......, as there isn't really anything to gain in performance anyways.

    Is it possible matching high performance coils with a slightly wider spark plug gap greater than spec might allow for a combined powerful yet still reliable burn in the cylinder without misfire?

    • @Turbo_Snail
      @Turbo_Snail  Год назад +1

      Possibly. But the shop guy already predicted the outcome before the car ever was strapped down. There are tons of variables. Maybe once the engine approaches crazy hp or compression a could would matter. However on a stock engine or even slightly modified one I doubt it’ll do anything. I know it doesn’t do a thing on mine and I’m about as far as I’m able to push it without boost or NOS.
      So the real question is what does the high performance coil actually do? Maybe it can be bench tested? Or is is just pretty? And yes, those RIPP coils do have a sweet color.

      The stuff that comes stock from the factory is already excellent. Spend your money on other stuff but not here. The stock spark plugs are good for 100k miles. If your plugs go, just replace with a stock one unless you want a fancy color under your beauty cover.
      There are tons of other places to make more HP. Check the upper intake manifold, CAI (the one from MOPAR), and a good tune. My 200 is lighter than a challenger but I consistently pull on even the 5.7l V8s. Add ethanol to that (mine is E85 capable from the factory) and I run 13.8s on a 1/4 mile on a hot day.

      Many of us have tunes. It just doesn’t work. Maybe if you’re boosted and tuned but I doubt it. Buy it when yours breaks for the color. 1-2 hp difference could just be within the tolerances of the run itself. The first coil was the same as the last and there was I think 1-2 hp. So nothing basically. I really loved the color of the RIPP. The nicest one by far.

      More fuel doesn’t work unless you have more air. All these manufacturers were within the margin of tolerance. The difference, which we didn’t test, is the consistency and longevity. A coil on plug is not like a traditional setup. These engines are pushed to the limit because they are computer controlled and everything is accounted for. A 3.6l engine 30 years ago had about 150hp, today they ouch 300-400 from the factory. Any change you made back then mattered. Bolt ons hitt’n different these days.

      On a car that does not produce a lot of power, small changes such as coils will not produce a drastic change. The next test which the OP mentioned doing on a boosted car, is where there "may be" a difference. You see, on a 1000 hp race engine, just dropping the air temperature a few degrees could net you 50 hp...
      That's how they can advertise a 35hp gain, because they probably ran them on an 800hp boosted motor, there's a lot of trickery in advertisements. Thank you to the OP for making this video and saving regular Joe's like you and I from wasting their hard earned money.

      Another trick they may use is running an engine dyno vs a chassis dyno. On a chassis dyno power is lost through the trans, driveshaft, rear end and tires so the numbers aren't as flattering. On an engine dyno you can eliminate the power loss thereby inflating your HP & TQ numbers. So that 1000 hp race engine on an engine dyno makes 1000 hp but on a chassis dyno it's probably closer to 850.

    I'm so lost so how did Ripp get 250HP stock to 264HP with Ripp coil packs? He made a video of it for the Ram 1500 3.6 Pentastar is his Dyno faking numbers?

    • @Turbo_Snail
      @Turbo_Snail  4 года назад +1

      I don’t think they faked numbers. It could have been a whole bunch of factors. If the original coils were old, by putting in new coils, it will give an improvement. Also, when we did our first run, the numbers were a bit lower, on the last run we put the original coils back in and it had a higher horsepower. Also, the ram is probably tuned for more torque, less hp, that could be a factor. We could have run 10 runs and take the lowest number and do another 10 runs with the other coils and take the highest number. We only did 2 runs per coil set. We were really disappointed with the results. I had money in hand to buy the #2 coils from Brian. The dyno guy called it before we even started, he said, there is no way we would have any improvement. Was betting an 8-10hp over stock, Brian and Aaron were betting 5hp over stock. We checked the graphs, high and low, it just was within 2-3hp, which is within the margin of tolerance. I can’t speak for RIPP. They were so sure about their coils, they sent Brian a free set for the shootout. Brian and Aaron are professionals, the 2 dyno guys there do it for a living. I was the only one who was more of a bystander. I learned a lot. Maybe a different ambient temperature. It was fairly cool that day, maybe if the car was boosted. Maybe with a different spark plug combination, maybe without AWD, maybe, maybe, maybe. I’d love to repeat this whole thing. Brian will be doing another dyno day for the throttle body, we’ll see what happens then.
