I've used soft PVC drawer liner for my tool chest, just in black. Bang for buck is good, no complaints. Nice experiment you did with different materials. This was very helpful for my next project.
I used some 3mm red carpet material for mine, I repurposed several office drawer cabinets I got for free and the carpet was the best bang for buck as a liner, and provides good contrast.
Cris, in Brazil it’s quite easy to find that soft PVC foam mat, usually in semi-industrial rubber stores. It’s sold in rolls, and you can buy it pretty cheap by the meter, also in colors other than that parrot green, like matte black or gray. Another material I think could work for you is an anti-slip sticky mat, often used underneath loose rugs and mats to prevent slipping (though I'm not sure if that soft PVC drawer liner is the same thing). Absolutely love your shop!
What a great idea! I've got kaizan foam but agree that this approach is much more flexible, simple and future proof! Now I'm annoyed I didn't think of it 😂
Love every video in the catalog. I find it a little funny that wood itself may be as good as any surface. Padding and soft place to lay them is nice but wood is good too. I like leather inserts in drawers but this is a never-ending pursuit. Felt works for my uses too.
Leather products have tannins and other oils that will corrode unprotected metal tools, That's why green felt or similar is used in traditional tool cases.
Thanks for a very interesting video, Cris! I have used Ikea variera drawer mat (002.388.65) as protection and antislip in most of my drawers for the same reason as you and in all of my 27 (don't ask 🙄) kitchen drawers which is a grey polyethylene washable liner with a pattern of small nobs on top. It won't get a high rating in your "nice look" column 😂 but it is cheap at 3,50 Euros for a 150*50 cm roll which gets top rating in my "cheap" column.😅. And 0 points from the Gridfinity fanclub. Cya in the next video.
Good shootout, well explained. My hint for this problem: Rolson 60815 - search on the big A for this mat. It comes at a size of 45 x 125 cm and no glue is needed to keep it in place. So you could easily take it out your drawer and clean it. And yes: it's no fabric, it's kind of plastic / rubber. I'm also using it to avoid workpieces slipping away from my workbench (when I'm tooooo lazy to fasten them). There are plenty of other brands as well, but this one works fine (for me).
Ooooo, I like this idea. I move around my stuff daily, so even something as open as gridfinity would just require too much spare parts to keep up with how I (poorly) organize. Thank you ^^. I absolutely need to look into potentially nicer drawer liners
Have you tried a peg board type design, make your own peg hole design you can add, subtract or move around for future tools. And as always this was a great video 😊
Haha! Sometimes you have problems that you don't really notice. So thank you for the video. I recently installed a drawer apothecary cabinet in my kitchen. I didn't line it with newspapers like my grandma used to do - but with kitchen roll. Not a really good idea. But I've somehow come to terms with the fact that things slide around. Now I have a solution, silly me.
We use the thicker PVC stuff in our mechanic's carts. It is available in several colors from auto parts stores in the US, and I think we got some of it from the Snap-On truck, although that's clearly the most expensive way you can possibly buy it. The thicker stuff has a bit of a "memory foam" effect. If you lay out the tools neatly during your Friday cleanup, by Monday there will be a bit of an imprint in the foam. Sort of an outline to tell where things belong and to identify if anything is missing. The foam recovers after a few days if you remove the tool, so if you re-arrange, your new layout is "recorded" pretty quickly. Anyway, organization is always a fun topic, and always completely out of my ability to achieve!
That pvc foam can be found as anti slip bathroom matt, i would like to add anti slip carpet underlays as well. But my concern, i am not that clean, how i can clean the drawers from wood dust. Felt and some of those options sound terrible for a nasty workshop. And for metalwork, how much oil do these materials soak, i need to do consider couple more requirements but you helped me cut the list at least in half. Thanks!
I realize aesthetics is a big thing in your decision, but in my own tiny workshop I use mechanic's tool chests (the red/black all metal ones), to hold all of my tools and the grippy PVC drawer liners have been the best. All of my drawers have those liners in them and there area couple different types/styles. The ones with the cushiony open-cell kind of design seem to work the best, but even then I think my biggest problem is I still end up just chucking tools into most of them so they may not move around when I open and close the drawers, but I still end up hunting for the tool I need because I wasn't careful putting stuff away.
Interesting comparison between materials. I do feel that the sliding should have been tested on a surface with the slope increasing, so you would have concrete data (as in: the square started to slide at 6 degrees inclination). Also: billiard tables are not covered with the kind of felt you used in this video, but with a very high end material, wool based and processed to a very high finish. But that would be slippery, b/c you know - balls careening on it and such. That being said, I like that very cheap non-slid open weave materialfor drawrs and such that is very cheap and comes in awful colours beside somewhat acceptable black and gray.
I'm being honest, the green PVC thing initially seemed a bit off-putting. But guess what? I've actually grown to love it! (I can't believe I've come to this conclusion either!)
Is there a reason you only tested soft textiles? That just seems intuitively quite bad if you wanna reduce slipping of hard metal and plastic objects. The leather side of the desk mat would have easily been the best option. Silicone or rubber mats are great too. There's so many other specialized anti-slip materials to find as well. A typical application is kitchen drawers.
Its my humbe request that you work on a project of making a chess set and a board and add a touch of modern times led lights to be clear😂😂😂😂 Thank you, Max from Kenya
agreed. gridfinity is the perfect solution in for me as well, but I would ad that it makes most sense when you have at least one 3D printer... want to design in 3d for some parts and accept the initial setup takes time with just one printer if you have lots of drawers etc.
@@teymthebeast Well yea, a 3D printer is required. I only mentioned it at all because those that make things for a living (i.e GHD for instance) are more and more likely to have one these days. They already have a CNC machine, a 3D printer isn't that far off. I think investment wise, it's actually cheaper.
Most of the drawer foams are WAY too expensive for what they are KAIZAN especially so - I found a company that makes the same foam, and sells it in sheets 4x the size of the average drawer for HALF the cost - so it's 8x cheaper. Old playroom mats - the ones that go together like jigsaws, they also work fine. I'm not spending £100 of drawer liners when my drawers didn't cost muchmore.

love this! the 3D printed/molded drawers do look sooo nice but the simplicity of the flat drawers seems way more efficient!
A black yoga mat might work well. Love your channel!

My first thought with the microfiber and suedes is that they'll show every speck of dirt--drawer liners for the win, for me!

Hello, good afternoon! I really like your video! It is interesting to see your workshop room tour of your premises.

Kitchen roll? You mean foil or greaseproof paper? yikes.
Fantastic tests, Chris! Thanks a bunch! 😃
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊

Nice Music @ the end 😊
Great video Cris, thanks for sharing your findings. Cool tape measure by the way.
I can recomend thin EVA. VERY grippy and bouncy. Also cheap.
The material they use for the backing of a good mousepad/playing card material is really good for drawer lining
Love this video!! Brilliant content, thanks for testing.
Use non-slip rug underlay. Not only does it come in large sizes (so you can use a single piece even in extra large drawers), it also comes in black
Something that comes to mind is rug underlay sheets. They can be either rubber, or fabric, and have a slightly tacky surface, not sticky, just tacky.
That pvc foam can be found as anti slip bathroom matt, i would like to add anti slip carpet underlays as well. But my concern, i am not that clean, how i can clean the drawers from wood dust. Olá, Cris. Muito obrigado pelas dicas. Bem funcionais. Bom trabalho!
Thank you so much for testing !!
Very nice work!
Passing by to give a thumbs up.

I keep meaning to try and form felt into shapes, with steam, to organise drawers. But I never actually tried this idea out.
I think it was also worth trying something with a longer pile.
У тебя самая лучшая мастерская которую я видел на RUclips 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉👍👍👍👍👍👍
0:49 I’m of the same thinking, having cutouts would make me just keep filling the shop with more cabinets… I don’t have the space for that
Thanks. That was useful.
I've had good success with yoga mats
Shadow Foam? I want to try it next for my tool box
was expecting you to try a sheet of cork because 🇵🇹
I believe cork works better at preventing wine from slipping 😄
@@professormarceloricci but it always fails, in my experience 🥂
Nice!

I'm also loving the drawer with the front face black and the accent green on the sides. Sooooo beautiful

Sometimes the cheap, functional option is best, save your premium money for the tools and build materials.
You can sew tool rolls for your tools with the remaining fabric

cheap yoga mats or opencell neoprene works wonders Cristiana
I guess nummer 9 & 10 can be found as anti-slippery mat for bathrooms (showers especially) in many countries.
😢 i needed the green drawer! So sad.

IKEA sell rolls of this..

The stuff you chose works well but tends to degrade over time. Just replace it every few years and I think it will be fine.
Being Portuguese how could you not test cork sheets or self-adhesive rolls? 😧
Hmmmm, no "rubber" mats?
None. Just go with 100% Gridfinity. Will require a 3D printer though but gridfinity is bloody awesome.
