Symphony of Science - 10th Anniversary Tribute

  • Celebrating 10 years of remixing scientists with a mashup of my earliest work. It all began with a goofy remix of Carl Sagan I thought nobody would ever see - I had no idea what I was doing or where I was going, but I was having fun. The response blew me away. I owe everything to you guys - my deepest thanks to everyone who has followed along on this weird and wild creative journey and made the whole thing possible.
I kinda cringe at the quality of those old videos, but the spirit is much the same, and I hope you dig this little nostalgic trip back through the past decade.
I always thought my dream job would be a musician or film composer. But this trip has taught me that filmmaking is where my passion is strongest. Exploring the endless possible synergies between visuals, music, sound, and thought will keep me occupied for a lifetime. I am slowly phasing out the use of auto-tune as I gear up for the next phase in this creative journey, which will be to deliver truly mind-bending, sensory rich experiences that explore the frontiers of human knowledge.
This journey is just beginning. Big things are in store. I would love for you to join me for the next 10 years.
Follow along for more deep thoughts and deep tunes :)
    Peace and love,
    Melodysheep

Can't believe it's been 10 years. Thanks for being a part of this wild ride with me. To be honest, I can barely watch my old videos - they are so amateur compared to what I'm working on now - but I hope you dig this nostalgic trip through the past decade. Any questions? Thoughts?

This gave me chills. As a current phd student struggling with depression and felling a bit disillusioned about how science is actually performed these days this reminded me of the pure excitement and wonder that inspired me to start this journey and that resonated so deeply in your symphony of science videos. Thank you so much for their creation. I have been watching for quite some time, I know all the words to a few of them and most of the words to the rest. Now to go watch them all again. :)

Scientists today are all too often obsessed with publishing as many papers as they can in order to get recognition... this leads to a situation where they can't all be verified through the rigorous testing (and the attempt at breaking) that science needs to prove ideas.

I have discovered you in 2010 when I started my PhD. Your music made me feel so proud to be a scientist and listening to it, I felt like a part of larger community, of people in awe of nature and scientific method. I may no longer be a scientist by profession, but I will always remain proud of this community. Even though it has its faults (quite a few, I think), people of science continue to inspire me.
Thank you for bridging this gap between science and the arts.

How ten years have flown... I remember hearing "A Glorious Dawn" for the first time one night in late 2009. I was so enraptured with how you'd created something that expresses such a love of astronomy, science, and, of course, music. Over the course of the following year - the most turbulent year of my life - listening to these remixes helped more than I can say. I remember sharing one of them with my aunt one day when were stranded in a motel in California, and even though I'm sure it wasn't really her cup of tea, she could hear the beauty in it... Ten years later, I still get excited about whatever new upload comes out. Long story short, thank you so much for your work!

I got home that night and listened to every single one you had put out and have continued to keep up with them over the last 7-8 years. Crazy how fast time flies, I'm in my 3rd year of college now. Thanks for all the work you've put into these man, and all your remixes for that matter. Best of luck for all your future endeavors my man

That was about the same time that I approached John Boswell (Symphony of Science) about going to schools and sharing his videos with science students as a non profit. John kindly agreed to let me share as long as I gave him credit of course. I wanted and needed some financial backing to start but never was able to come up with the funds and went to work for someone (the man) but my daughter was about your age at the time also. We watched the videos together and I saw how it affected her AND MYSELF. I wanted to share symphony with EVERONE your age because we need smart people in the STEM fields. I hope you are doing good, she's in her 3rd year at university to be a veterinarian. SCIENCE SCIENCE SCIENCE :D

@@Flyingtart Yes, me too! I was 15 and shared it with absolutely everybody I knew, teachers, students. The teachers all sucked and never played them, despite showing us the documentary that a SoS video used as source material, like David Attenborough's documentary Charles Darwin and the Tree of Life where he says, "All life is connected. And it enables us to construct with confidence the complex tree that represents the history of life. Our planet, the Earth, is as far as we know unique in the universe--it contains life. Here plants and animals proliferate in such numbers that we still have not even named all the different species."
I squirmed along as I loudly narrated David Attenborough because I knew what he would say from listening to the Symphony of Science on repeat for about 7 months at the time. To prove a point to my teacher that she could have also played a 3 minute video that was way cooler than her lame "science" songs that tried to make science look "hip" yikes

The Joy of Discovery was the first video of yours I watched and it had a profound effect on me. It was a dark place in my mind at that time, and I often struggled to find meaning for my existence, and that video specifically helped me come out of that place. A few years later I was talking to a friend who was in a similar state and was contemplating ending himself, and I couldn't seem to break through his apathy until I showed him the same video. He said it was the most beautiful thing he'd ever seen, and the overall message was the first thing to make him feel anything in months. He's still around, and doing much better, so hey, you can add saving lives to the list of things you've accomplished. Thanks for all the wonderful music.

10 years! I remember back when I was first introduced to your channel, nearly 6 years ago now, by my science teacher. The video was the "symphony of science - poetry of reality" video and I remember writing down the channel name and binge watching all the videos you had when I got home. By far the best channel I have ever subscribed to. Keep up the amazing work!

melodysheep, I grew up with your videos and your music. The Carl Sagan songs and your other old remixes were the first songs Ive truly enjoyed as a 11 year old child when I was browsing RUclips. I'm 21 now and I'm so glad to see you're still making videos and youre still making music, still as beutiful as I remember them. Watching your videos gives me a lot of nostalgia. I love everything space related, especially the philosophical aspect of space. I love you for the beutiful work you've created. I used to listen to your remixes on repeat while I was playing outside or doing homework. I know every single science song by heart, I just love them so much. Much love from Germany, this channel really, really means a lot to me.

I found you channel at a turning point in my life. When you posted you second symphony of science video. It was just what I needed to keep pushing forward in school. You gave science the awe inspiring feeling that it used to have watching Cosmos as a kid. Hard to find as an adult. Thank you so much for keeping this thread alive. It means so much to me!

When you become one with the Universe, you want to understand and open your mind to all the knowledge you can. You feel Gratitude and Respect for Mother Earth. You Respect the Power of Earth's energy it releases. You realize how little we are in this big universe. Seeing the last picture of our planet taken by Voyager 1 in 1990. Named the family portrait by Nasa. Earth was a little blue spec, so tiny.
It made me put everything in perspective. It made me want to try and make a difference in this world. We are all equal, we all live on Earth, let's make the best of it.

Congrats! I didn't even realise that some of my favourite videos of yours are already 10 years old! Your videos introduced me to Carl Sagan and a lot of other great people, I love the music (even if you think it's a bit eh dated by now?) and I still find myself singing along or just singing parts of the songs occasionally. I'm excited to see where your work will go, onward to the edge I say! Good luck on your journey!

I have followed your videos for all 10 years and absolutely love them. I am a High School Philosophy and Literature teacher and have used your wonderfully, thought provoking synopses on countless occasions as a catalyst for creative discussion and student driven learning. They inspire me and they inspire my students. Thank you so much for all your hard work and dedication. Without question my favourite coffee ruminating - Would love more Feynman - what an eclectic rogue.

I don't remember when I first heard your works, but it was somewhere in the ballpark of 8 or 9 years ago. I've been fascinated ever since. My personal favorite will always be A Glorious Dawn. Carl Sagan was one of the most important people of the last century, and this was a brilliant way to honor him and Cosmos.
I appreciate what you do and look forward to more to come.
