I forgot to add this to my previous comment, but I'm SO glad you pointed out the pickup angle! I don't think pickup placement is talked about enough with extended range guitars at all. You still managed to at least get the chugs going regardless, which is always good.
I too was curious to hear how the straight pickup would sound, and on the low strings, it sounds probably as expected, which is similar to how a middle pickup sounds. It doesn't have the precision that a compensated bridge pickup (straight on a normal scale, slanted on a multiscale) does. Someone out there might be able to make use of it, but I don't know how many people are going to want this sound.
The pickups not being slanted not only affects the EQ, but also the literal sound of the low strings. It sounds closer to being a middle pickup than a bridge pickup. It has nothing to do with being a blade style or not. Put a bridge pickup in the middle postion of a 3-pickup guitar (humbucker or single coil), and it sound drastically different just from the placement of the pickup. The pickup here sits right in the middle for the low strings, which is just not a great rhythm sound. Schecter should've slanted these. They wont have any of that low tuned "snarl." And not only that, that pickup sits right where quite a few people pick the strings, so it's also in the way. Nonetheless, this is a well done video, as usual! These guitars still look pretty cool.
Schecter already has other 7 & 8 string Multi-scales with slanted Fishman Fluences in them. Seems odd why they didn't do that here? Maybe they are intentionally going after that tone or something?
I don't think they should've slanted it, I think it's cool that it's straight. Gives it interesting deepness without it being muddy, it's actually one of the things that makes this one of my favorite Schecters!
@@minnesodopeProbably stepping outside the lines here: These are new Fishman pickups. Is it possible that they have a deal with Schecter to market them? And since there isn't a 9-string open core version (which is needed for 8-string multiscale due to string spacing), Schecter put them in straight to fit that marketing deal, regardless of overall sound? Even though they could've slanted them with the 7-string using 8-string pickups, continuity between models is much easier. Again, maybe that thought process is out of bounds and all that.
@@Mr.GoldbarAnd that's awesome! Personal preference is the name of the game. For me, I prefer a snappier, less overtone response from low tunings, and above all else, "ssnnaaarrlll," hahaha. If the pickup is too far from the bridge, it doesn't sound as angry as I want it to. But I'm sure anyone with these guitars will find an application where that pickup placement sounds awesome for them.
I kind of like the position of this pickup. I think that odd voicing would sit really cool is a full band mix. Might have to make it a little less pokey, but i appreciate companies trying things out and throwing variety into a saturated market.
Think of your strings like sound waves, it has peaks and dips depending on where the pickup is placed you will get a better brighter response. A good way to test where the optimal spot for your pickup should be placed is doing harmonics over the pickup area, where you get the best harmonics is where the pickup “should be” placed, obviously it’s all taste and you can tweak your tone to work with where it’s at
The TAO was the least muddy guitar of recent time schecter have put out its super snappy and the pickups are killer I think ya just need to maybe learn to dial it in and play clean possibly
The angle of the pickup is the biggest turnoff for me. I kinda called that the bass was gonna be a bit “woofy” and not sound super tight. They almost nailed it. But a soapbar angled to the bridge it would be a perfect meat and potatoes chug machine
My hot take on these models is that the anodized pickguards seem like they would be a texture nightmare for me - outside of that, these look super neat
My Ormsby DC7 is a multiscale and has the same space between the bridge and the pickup and i was worried about having this problem but surprisingly with the SD machete pickup it has the same amount of bite as a normal positioned pickup does. I can definitely hear the difference in the tone with these schecters though and im wondering if it has to do with the pickups themselves?
on a regular tele the bridge pickup slants forward for .... reasons. With a multiscale (slanting back) a straight pickup is effectively the same. Teles sound stellar, the straightness of the pickup seems to matter very little.
I do get why so many would disagree but I love the non slanted pickup! It adds an interesting deepness to the sound without turning it into a mud fest, makes it a unique creative tool to create with! This + the Tele shape makes it one of the few Schecter guitars I'm interested in :)
I’ve got the reaper 7 multiscale with the slanted decimator pickups and the pickups are the only complaint I have with that guitar. I want to love it so bad but ended up buying a strandberg and don’t see me ever touching the schecter again just based on the pickups alone. The schecter pickups are also an odd size so I can’t just find a mass produced replacement without modifying the pickups and/or making a custom pickup cavity cover
I’m sure others will say this, but the pickups are typically slanted to line the pole pieces up with the strings. This pickup being a rail style, it doesn’t need to be slanted because the rail is the equivalent to the pole pieces
This isn’t quite true. The position of the pickup relative to the bridge alters the tone you’ll get for sure. It almost has the effect of sounding like a “middle” pickup rather than a bridge pickup which is what I was trying to explain by saying it kind of always has a split coil sound due to how far away it is from the bridge
@@BaenaCarcosa Are they maybe trying to replicate the tele style thing where you have a straight bridge & slanted pickup?? When you have slanted bridge for multi-scale, and a straight pickup. You get the same thing pretty much.
Literally was gonna say the pickup slant as nothing to do with pole pieces lining up as the string spacing does not change! I think its just because fishman doesnt make slanted pickups. This also makes pickup swaps easier. Tone will be interesting as the bass strings with be thicker sounding as the high string will sound very bright…
That tells you that Fishmans suck.I have KM7 artist with fishman. And i hate the sound of those pickups. But the structure and materials on the guitar is awesome. So i might as well change the pups
You got the pt-8 black ops?! Ohhh shitt!! Hows it play?! And honestly, even though you blurred the box on your thumbnail, i could see schecter, but i truly thought it was going to be a demon, or a hellraiser or even the John browne tao-8 or something
Honestly I'm not a big fan of the look. I do like a flat black but the textured stuff is just a little bit different for me. Like the wood grain and the metal pickguard. I prefer a smooth satin black finish all day babey. Even a glossy pickguard. Just not my thing I suppose. 🤷♂️
I probably forgot of you already had any deal with other guitar brand. But i think with all that work with Schecter you deserve your personal Signature models.
These guitars look amazing but I was also worried about the pickup position, after hearing this.. they should really have slanted it or ditched multiscale.
never liked shecter guitar but these two are cool , full black with alu effect on the pickguardf ! but not sure if it's the pickup position or the plugin , but this sound a bit too messy and round /hot , so not the type of tone i like overall , at least this his my first impression
I get the 'trendy' single bridge pickup, but come on, at least add a model that includes both bridge and neck with the slanted pickups. I'll buy inmediately if they ever do but probably unlikely. That or they will but it comes out in finishes i could care less for.
You know what the bridge pickup sounds like to me, the middle pickup on the Stef Carpenter model for the low strings and then a bridge pickup for the high strings
I definitely want that 7 string the specs is everything I want in a 7 string though I do prefer the look of sandblasted ash which ESP have done a lot of. i do listen to some bands that play 8 strings (like Carcosa of course 😉) but I have quite been swayed to want an 8 string yet and I am more of a 6 string, baritone 6 and 7 string guy. Also 25.5" scale to 30" for my 6 strings or 26" + for 7 strings.
PT is tele shaped and will always be tele shaped - it's named for Pete Townshend of The Who to this day; I think my first sighting of a complete Schecter sourced guitar was in the video Eminence Front. I think it was their first signature model that basically became an entire multi-tier, multi-genre, product line we see today. ESP has really not only curated but fostered the brand - thank you Hisatake! (buy dean)
