Considering Scrap Brain Zone makes Sonic 1 one of few Sonic games to get more than one song in Smash Bros. and Sakurai pointed out in an interview that the song was recognisable from the Japanese claw machine, I'm pretty sure this influenced Sonic's song representation in Smash, and why it's one of the handful of classic Genesis tunes picked.
As I said on the other videos, these are beta versions of the songs! There's three unused songs in the ROM, two not heard in Sonic 1, as well as Spring Yard.
@@niffuM4205 Spring Yard has the extra bass note that's only present in the prototype and demo versions of the song. Scrap Brain is also incredibly unpolished code-wise. Additionally, Spring Yard has an even earlier version of the percussion track in its data, which lines up with the Music Collection version of the track (which pre-dates the one in the prototype). There's many more things, like the general unpolish of the data aligning with the prototype, but those are the key points.
Nope, i looked up the rom and it has its own hardware, it doesn't have the M68000 CPU running at 7.6 Mhz, instead, it runs with a Z80 at 8 Mhz (and that does not mean that it's faster than the Genesis)
this machine was specifically made for a set of small sonic the hedgehog ufo plushies in 1991, being the first sonic plushies produced to the public. the plushies are long gone but the machines are still in arcades but filled with random unrelated plushies

As some have noted, the UFO Catcher board lacks the SN76489 PSG, only having a YM3438 (a CMOS version of the YM2612). The DAC, on the other hand, is a bit more complicated. The YM3438 has the same DAC as its YM2612, but it's unused on the UFO Catcher board due to technical limitations: without any buffering capability, it requires PCM data to be continuously pushed to it. On any and all Mega Drive/Genesis games that use the DAC, the console's Z80 processor actually spends most of its time driving the DAC by pushing PCM samples to it one byte at a time, doing absolutely nothing else in the case of games with 68k-based sound drivers, or only stopping at VBlank to update the FM channels and PSG in the case of games with Z80-based drivers (the sound driver used on the UFO Catcher board is apparently derived from Sega's SMPS Z80 Type 1 driver, which lacks DAC support). The UFO catcher board is run by a single Z80 which spends most of its time running the game, updating the FM channels on the YM3438 based on a timed interrupt generated by said chip. With the Z80 spending most of its time running the game, there's simply nothing available to push data to the DAC, hence why it is unused here.
there's two main reasons as to why it sounds different: due to its sound driver (and also probably lacking psg) the drums and the square sounds are missing/substituted these are also likely to be based off earlier versions of the in game songs, hence why scrap brain has that extra note.
The reason for the sound change: 1. There is no PSG channels 2. There is no Motorola 68000 so there is no CPU to drive the DAC channel. Thus, there is only FM drums. (later Sonic games use the Z80 CPU of the Master System to drive the PCM audio)
I think the most interesting part of these is the fact that they were origonally distributed as sonic spacific machines, as were stocked with the first sonic UFO plush set ever released.
That invincibility/title screen theme sounds more like the slower ending remix. (And I think that the ending version was a bit heavier on that BASS than the intro & invincibility versions. The invincibility version is obviously the fastest running variant, too.)
I also remember that most Pinball tables from the 90's have this kind of sound in them, like Stern, Williams, etc. One table I recall which might have the best representation of this would probably be Gottlieb's Rescue 911. Also not to mention Fish Tales by Williams.
I have so much nostalgia for the original Sonic the Hedgehog, I still play the games to this day, but something about these songs being played through a Crane Machine of all things, really does inject pure nostalgia right into my veins! Sega truly was something else back in the day!
In a modern trend chasing videogame landscape where most of the AAA industry has shifted its focus to dishing out cheap content in the form of live service games or ruining linear titles by forcing them to be open world or using political agendas as a substitute for good story or character writing, Sega needs to come back.
