Frank left genius in his dust. On playing his music, I've heard musicians in interviews comment on how difficult bordering on the impossible it was to play his music. There will never be another Zappa. The music industry won't support it.

There's been many documentary type programs about Zappa. And many interviews in trade magazines like Guitar Player. He used to hire entire orchestras, and would sit them down and set the sheet music in front of them. One guy they interviewed was an old man who played violin. And he said "I asked him how he learned to do all this ? And Frank answered " I went to the library ."

Yup, in the 80s there were two albums released of the London Symphony orchestra playing music composed and arranged entirely by Zappa
Zappa would actually conduct the band on stage with a baton in his hand. He was composer, producer, arranger, lyricist, conductor, vocalist and stunning lead guitarist. He was also a mentor to all his other musicians, and pushed them to levels they never even dreamed they could achieve. For instance, Zappa encouraged George Duke to try synthesizers (which he did very successfully) and shaped the sound and tone of musicians like Steve Vai. By the way, I believe Zappa actually started out as a drummer.

Black Napkins is so good, I had no idea Frank could play the guitar like that.
First time I heard this was in HS art class - '76 I think . This album made me laugh, but at the same time, we were amazed at how wild the music is. Glad you guys like it.

The story I heard was that when Lowell George, then a member of the Mothers, brought him his song “Willin’”, Zappa told him it was tome to start his own band, & we got Little Feat! Another great reaction. ✌️❤️🎶

Directly From My Heart To You was a Little Richard song that Frank and the Mothers played brilliantly with Don "Sugarcane" Harris on violin and lead vocals.

In terms of his writing and melodies, nobody was as brilliantly volatile as Zappa. I couldn't even fathom the depths of his mind that he reached to make something like this
I saw Frank Zappa in concert in Germany around 1980. He told the crowd to step back and sit down because we're going to have fun! Everyone listened and it was perhaps the most enjoyable live show I have ever been to. You could get up and go get something to eat and drink and go back and join your friends!

Freaking drumming was just insane.
They actualy did it with Trout Mask Replica by Captain Beefheart and that album is the most unhinged thing ever and it took months for the band to learn how to play what Zappa wrote for them.
Lowell George and Roy Estrada, founding members of Little Feat, both played in Zappa's band before forming the Feat.
Fella's, if you want to hear a great Zappa album check out Zoot Allures. The song The Torture Never Stops is WILD. Frank was a musical genius. He wrote every part for every instrument and actually scored it on paper. Been listening to him for years.

Yea I had that album. Remember at the time a friend told me that Zoot Allures was from some African language meaning “Oh Shit” I don’t know if that is true or not. I did get to see him live a couple times in the seventies.

I have seen Frank Zappa & Band back in the early 70's... The show was mind blowing to say the least. They preformed this suite of songs as there opener... WOW I'm still trying to wrap my head around that show till this day!!
He was a genius and he was self-taught in music, famous for saying: If you want to get laid, go to college. If you want to get educated, go to the library.
The first album i listen from Frank, i was 15 years old. I thought, there is music and there is Frank Zappa. After that i was hooked.
Saw Zappa and the Mothers 4 times in the 70's. One of the shows became the album Just Another Band From L.A. Phenomenal showman! With nothing but some of the finest musicians on the world!

Ruth Underwood was so good on this album. Her percussion was right on time... Her "Classic Albums" interview about the "Apostrophe" and "Overnight Sensation" albums is really cool.
Frank was always showing the establishment music industry that he could make excellent music with nonsensical lyrics and the people would love it.

George Duke played keys for Zappa in early - mid 70"s (Overnite Sensation/ Apostrophe/ One Size Fits All) -- phenomenal jazz artist and composer who was core to chemistry of those albums. Co-wrote and vocals on Uncle Remus off Apostophe is great expample of his talent

Saw them live in the 70’s at Maples Pavilion, Stanford University- incredible the performance unbelievable. The music breaks - I was high , and shit they were just insanely good.
I saw him in 71, I think that it was the Just Another Band From L.A. tour with the guys from the Turtles in his band..they did an unreal performance of Willie the Pimp...
There is a Blu-ray of this lineup called Roxy - the Movie that captures what this band was capable of and how Frank directed and interacted with these musicians. The percussion is to die for...

I went to two Zappa concerts in 1988 when I was 19, and I can confirm I was not dancing, a lot of us had our eyes closed and were just listening. He also performed this whole suite live in the late 70's.

Frank zappa music was like looking at an abstract painting. An interesting journey always.
This album, along with Parliament, Dr. Demento, Mel Brooks, and Monty Python's Flying Circus helped to warp my sense of humor and general world view. To this day I have been know to ask "is that a real poncho or a Sears poncho?"

About the drugs and his band. There was a saying "Window or Aisle" meaning which seat would you like for your trip home if you did drugs. It was his name that would suffer if a band member screwed up. Flo and Eddy were the only members to smoke a joint in the studio ONE TIME and keep their job. They had just been hired and were very early on their first day. They begged for their lives to stay in the band. As punishment he hired a German Teacher and made them learn German and translate when in Europe. I went to all 5 Dweezilla events. Flo and Eddy told this story to us

It's really pretty much who DIDN'T play with Frank Zappa?? He had Flo & Eddie from the Turtles in his band, he's had Steve Vai in his band, he's had George Duke in his band, he's had Terry Bozzio in his band! The list is enormous and not to mention that he discovered Alice Cooper too!!😮😮❤

When I was kid in 70s my Dad only had country music on the radio or on tv on the weekend evenings. On days he was in a really happy mood it was this song or Dylan's Subterranean Homesick Blues. He always surprised me that he had even heard those and loved them both )

I feel like as I get older and learn more about things, read about topics and generally develop my worldview, there's always something new I can pull out of a Zappa album where I seem to understand better. He had his own way of looking at society and he made his recording career a whole entire in-joke that was a reflection of his worldview, using the term "conceptual continuity" to describe it. That being said, I don't really know what socio-political statement the Yellow Snow Suite was trying to convey, but its a lot of fun and one of his more approachable works and it contains terms that were from prior songs in his career to retain the whole conceptual continuity thing. Frank was on his own wavelength; he put in the work on his own at the library learning how to read and write orchestral music and attracted some of the most talented musicians from prestigious college music programs around based on those abilities that he learned on his own.
What I like about Frank's music is he takes you on this journey all across the globe. This song your at the north pole, this song your in the south west desert, the next your in the tropics, or east side of Chicago.
Time to hit "Broken Hearts Are For Assholes" A timeless classic! lol

I watch a lot of Zappa reactions. Yours are among the best. No BS, you have good ears and good comments. I’ve been a fan since 1973 when someone brought the album that “Billy the Mountain” is on (Just Another Band from LA) and I was hooked at 15 years old.
You can’t see Frank anymore, but his son Dweezl has a band - Zappa Plays Zappa - and the concerts are as amazing as you could imagine! If they come your way, get tix!
Frank Zappa wrote music for himself and a lot could not figure him out but he was pure music and you have to get into each instrument on his songs to really appreciate him. Peace & Love

One of my all-time favorite albums. I'm sixty-six and I bought this album twice back in the day. You're absolutely right: to write all this stuff out and find the musicians who can hang with you is special. Having George Duke play keyboards for you wasn't too shabby, either. I enjoyed this.
I was lucky enough to go to one of his concerts in the 1970s he had an entire orchestra and drummer had 3 kettle drums and a gong- it was wild-it sounded just like his albums
He was an absolute genius. My favorite guitar player of all time on top of being a master musical composer. The only person I never met that I truly miss.
Exactly,,,he was a musical GENIUS,, a lot of the band were from music colleges , the girl on xylophone came from Juliard and played with Frank till he passed
