Freedom of Entry is a very British military tradition inherited by the Aussies that goes back centuries. Every city that has a military base nearby will have a freedom of entry ceremony every few years, especially if a new unit is relocated to the city.
Why the Australian Army paid Tenix so much on redesigning the M113AS4 with a custom turret but persisting with just a 0.50 cal HMG is beyond me (especially when there were already turrets with 20mm and 25mm etc canons on the market).
It's probably because they are no longer a viable armoured vehicle (in terms of protection on a serious battlefield), they were being used mainly as as personnel carriers not fighting vehicles, they have plenty of 50 cals in stock, and replacements were on the horizon (M113s are Vietnam War era; Lynx has since been selected and will have a sizeable cannon and ATGWs). The Australian Army has configured several to operate as unmanned vehicles for research. That might end up be a suitable role for some, or maybe for reserves for local or low threat use.
Depends on army doctrine and limited budgets- one would rather put that money towards a 120mm armed main battle tank for overwhelming firepower and fire support.
M113AS4 look very capable and outstanding!!
Respect from Brazil
Sadly, we don't do this kind of thing in America. More's the pity. Well done Aussies!
We do, but the last time I remember was after ww2.

Bruce Lamberton probably cuz of weight
Its so the inside isnt completley fullof ammo and fire control systems. the M113 is a small chassis, meant for carrying troops, not an IFV.
@@ludaMerlin69 Well said. At least one person in these comments has clue.

What would a Javelin do to the upgraded m1113 tin can yo
Mark Leavey leave a very big hole
Why tf would the Javelin be used against it? Australia is a good ally of America.

1970 equipment...
You'll notice the machine guns are from ww2! what a shock. and if it works, who cares.
@@ludaMerlin69 The MGs aren’t from WW2, the design predates the war but the platforms in these vehicles are probably only ten years old.
They’ll still kill you if you get in their way.
