Thx. Building a curved fence to route my dogs in my backyard to the path I want them to use. Plus, the challenge and aesthetics will compliment my overall landscape plan.
Fantastic job, the finished fence looked strong as well as looking good , as ever you did a wonderful job, look forward to seeing the next video, take it easy 👍
It kind of depends. You need to do some estimating to make sure they'll all fit in the span. If they'll fit then yes, start with 4" off the first post. But if you need to make one or two a bit closer you can do that to "fudge" the difference at the end of the span
Great video... I was trying to find a video on building a fence on a cruve like this... But my wife wants only horizontal wood design instead of the vertical wood lines... And she wants the wood to be outside the post instead of putting it inside the post like u did... Do u have any tricks or tips on doin that?
I’m really struggling with accurate angle cuts. Any tips on how to improve there? I had one cut I use 4 pieces of lumber bc it kept being too small. Several others I have to go back a half dozen times to trim them down.
it's common to have to recut, but you should be able to get those angles dialed in with practice. it can help to draw the actual cut angle on the piece of wood, instead of estimating or using an angle measuring tool
I just did this exact build, with a curve and slope. Toughest part was cutting the correct angles for the top rails and pickets. A dual bevel miter saw was essential. I followed the slope of the ground between the posts for each section. I love how it turned out.
Oh yeah, horizontal fencing is good stuff and can work on this format. When I build horizontal modern fences, I focus on picket spacing to get it looking just right. And use good stock as you don't want them to sag/warp over time
This was a two day job: one day to prep and set the posts ... then a second day to construct the fencing and gate ... it was only 30' though, so a bigger fence would take me as long as a week
My gate openings are on a slope, running downhill along the face of the fence. Debating whether the gates should be level (and make a square) or run along the slope (and make a parallelogram). A square gate would look tidy, but it’s horizontal rails wouldn’t visually meet the rails from the adjacent fence portions. A parallelogram gate would nicely follow the slope (like the rest of the fence), and its horizontal rails would visually meet the rails from the adjacent fence. Also thinking about functionality, my guess is that square gate would be better balanced, and that a parallelogram gate may be more inclined to shut (or swing open, depending on which side the hinges are on). Anyways, did you consider this when making yours?
I've done it both ways and it really depends on the location and look you're going for. The one problem I've had with the parallelogram gate is how it swings: in some instances, it'll hit things on the bottom. Anyway, good luck with it!
Hey spencer, Do you charge by hour? If so, how do you tell your clients that you’ll be filming while handy manning? Or do they just get a free subscription to your patreon as compensation?
Great question! I don't charge by the hour so there is no added cost/time to them ... when I did hourly work (a while back) I wouldn't set up shots or anything like that, and working inside people's homes means getting consent and protecting identity and all of that. :)
@@piazzaalexis Yeah, rails are some nice rough hewn cedar 2x4 cedar. I've seen fences sag over the years with 8' spans. I'm not worried about it in this case but if you are you could do 6' spans.
what length screws? did you use a torx or phillips head screw? finally, did you just eyeball each post and twist them slightly to establish the curve? thanks for the informative tutorial.
Wuts up bro just seen ur video, great job. I’m planning to install a fence in my front yard. I have a curve as well in my front yard yard, but it’s kind of an aggressive curve. It’s pretty curvie. So instead of a six feet gap from pole to pole , should I make it a 4 feet gap instead!??….
that could work but the best thing to do is lay out some 2x4s ahead of time to get a feel for that curve and the lengths ... that way you can really visualize it
by far the best fence build i've seen. so simple and easy to follow. i now feel confident enough to take on this project. thanks again!
Keep it simple and you'll be super happy with the results!
Wow, nice job there. Thanks!
Thanks!
This is remarkably satisfying to watch.
Great to hear! :)
another beautiful fence. And it's going to look even better with age/natural weathering.
I agree ... get some time on that cedar and it really looks great
This was perfect for a project I am about to start. Thank you.
Good to hear -- enjoy it!
Love the western red cedar. Nice clean design, too.
It sure is good stuff, and smells as good as it looks
Thanks for the video, you make it look super easy. You're workmanship was clean and precise.
Glad to hear! Thanks

Sounds pretty good! The organic shape is a nice touch when most fences are so angular
Great looking fence.
Thanks man

Nice work

Where do you start with the first “picket”? Did you measure 4 inches in from the post? Or do you do measurements and make them all equidistance?
It kind of depends. You need to do some estimating to make sure they'll all fit in the span. If they'll fit then yes, start with 4" off the first post. But if you need to make one or two a bit closer you can do that to "fudge" the difference at the end of the span
That's a beautiful fence
Nice of ya. Thanks!
Great job as always! 👍
Thanks for checking it out!
That's great bro.Help me a lot. thanks
you bet man
Nice to have a fence for privacy
It looks so good.❤️👍
Big thanks!
I love this fence!
Thanks! We'll have to build two or three
The fence looks nice
Thanks!
Good work 👨🔧
Thank you! Cheers!
Very nice fence ! Love this kind of wood 👍
Yeah, the wood made it sooooo much better. Rough hewn cedar is nice stuff

Awesome video. Thank you.
Thanks for checking it out!
Well done sir!!
Thanks Alex!
very good
You are the MAN!
Thanks for checking it out, bud
Very nice. Please at the end show a full view still shot of the fence. So we can pause and take a screen shot with our phones.
There is a pic on my instagram (metaspencer) account back in September ... thanks for checking it out!
Nice job!!!
big thanks!

I built this one using horizontal boards -- ruclips.net/video/hnSiR3sx3wM/видео.html ... maybe that will help! you can do it!

Nice of you to say! Big thanks man
Hey, I like those caps. Where can I get them?
I just picked them up at the local hardware store ... or you can make them out of cedar on your table saw
@@metaspencer How big is the overhang? 1 inch around? Or less?
@@Ledzep312 I don't have them in front of me but I'd say 3/4" to 1"
kinda like these: amzn.to/43t8XGr

Woohoo! Thanks for checking it out
Curved fense on a slope, any advice for that type of project? Thanks
Lots of ways to do it and it depends on the look you want. Level sections? Even sloping fence? Sounds like a good one

Can you do this fence with all horizontal pickets? Looking to follow my driveway as well but wanted to be a little more modern looking
Oh yeah, horizontal fencing is good stuff and can work on this format. When I build horizontal modern fences, I focus on picket spacing to get it looking just right. And use good stock as you don't want them to sag/warp over time
Nice, how long did it take to build

Is the picket spacer you used a 2x4? So the spacing is actually 3.5 inches? Or is it a full 4?
This pickets on this one are more like a 2x2 to give it a thinner, lighter look ... I don't recall the spacing but tend to go for 4"
Any reason why you put the hinges and latch on the outside?
AC unit on the inside that the gate would have swung into ... ya know how it is: gotta build based on what's around
@@metaspencer yep, there's always somethin.
Awesome! I am going to do one like this one :-)
You're gonna love it! simple and elegant
We have a small patch of gardening within a communal garden
Oh cool, sounds good
What size and type of screws are you using for the rails and pickets? Are you pre-drilling with a countersink?
Yep predrill with countersink. Cedar is dry around here. Size depends on application- 3.5” to 2”
And use good outdoor rated fasteners
I like it.
Big thanks!

What are the dimensions for the horizontal rails?
I never go beyond 8' but in this case I divided the full span into equal segments so they were all about 7' 6"
@@metaspencer and they were 2x4’s? 2x3’s?
@@piazzaalexis Yeah, rails are some nice rough hewn cedar 2x4 cedar. I've seen fences sag over the years with 8' spans. I'm not worried about it in this case but if you are you could do 6' spans.

That's a fence that'll last long. Looks very durable.
That's the hope! Good hearing from you
what length screws? did you use a torx or phillips head screw? finally, did you just eyeball each post and twist them slightly to establish the curve? thanks for the informative tutorial.
Posts in this case align with curved driveway but string might help ya. Torx are all I use and mainly 3.5” but some 2” on the balusters. Good luck!
No kickers to hold the posts plumb
With short posts and thick cement, I've never found the need
👍👍👍👌♥️
Thanks!
Impressive…. Knock sue cow.
Do people like to paint the fence white, or is that just me?
Yeah a lot do … nice look!
@@metaspencer Ok thanks! I will give it a try.
That’s not a curved fence, it’s a series of short straight fences.
Correct! Steaming and then bending the rails would be pretty sweet, and yet the faces of the pickets would still be flat
