  • How to replace the governor assembly and govenor pin in a single cylinder Kohler Command Pro engine. This is in my 2003 Craftsman LT1000 Lawn tractor with an 18hp Kohler CV492-s engine. The engine spontaneously started over-revving and most likely would have self destructed. The problem was that the govenor pin came off of the shaft and there was no speed regulation. I show the steps taken to remove the engine, take off the bottom sump cover and replace the govenor gear and pin. This is a DIY project thay could save hundreds of repair dollars and will restore the engine to working condition. The failure of the govenor mechanism could cause serious engine damage if the engine is operated in this condition. My 18 year old tractor was fixed with a few hours of work and inexpensive parts. Don't get rid of your tractor - Fix - it.

    Thank you so much. I think I have that problem. I've got an older 16hp craftsman Kohler. Worst part with that lawn tractor is leaving the seat in the sun. Going in for lunch and sitting back down. Excellent.

    Thanks so much for this. I either have a carb issue or governor issue. Mine doesn't over rev but the throttle doesn't really respond like its supposed to and kind of surges. I think I'll replace the governor gear when grass cutting season is over. Thanks again, really good video sir.

    Hey Ken !
    I’ve been going thru issues with my kohler courage 19 hp single cylinder started with an adjustment of the governor and it turned bad.
    I thought I broke something in the crankcase.
    Turned out no but in the process had cam gear out and apparently got timing off. Yeah crazy, but seeing all the RUclips guys I found and learned exactly what was wrong.
    Parts are ordered and it will be fixed real soon. I lost the spring on the cam gear compression release lever.
    While in the crankcase I cleaned and inspected everything only found minor crud in it. I learned a whole lot in a few days. I’m confident now with the views and my working on it I should be ok.
    Thanks to guys like you and those you mentioned ! South Main Auto is awesome and for fyi check out Rainman Ray’s Repairs he is local to me but very good like Eric.
    Like my son use to tell me when he was a little kid “ Dad you can fix anything” he might be right. Further a buddy says it’s good we learned to fix Chit when we were young, in todays world we wouldn’t have the money to pay to fix it. Cost are crazy out of hand.
    C Ya !!!!

    It is called a "flyweight", not a flywheel! The flywheel is attached to the top end of the crankshaft!

    Fix what you can fix, and tinker with what you can tinker with! FTRR is a philosopher too!!
    Great idea with the spark plug trick, I do the same thing on my Chinese ATV’s Zongshen engine when troubleshooting problems.

    Thanks for the great video Ken! I agree with the other posters - it is so fun to see your enthusiasm when things go well. I love how you've kept that old girl running. The governor on my brand new Cub Cadet blew. It was still under warranty, so they scored us a brand new engine, a good thing. But, I bet they make that gear plastic since they know it'll fail eventually, and perhaps the metal parts inside the crank can't be hurt too badly by a blown plastic governor gear. but, as for the other metal bits that are part of the governor, they probably could reek havoc on the internals, so in this case, I'll say a ok to a new engine under warranty. Great video - I feel like I know you and "let's grab a beer". Cheers Mate!

    Thank You for your inspiration to repair my old Jphn Deere STX38, I would not have started the job of replacing the governor gear and pin on a kroller command 13 if it were not for your informative video.

    This saved me a lot of guessing work...BTW, I did encounter the oil pump issue, had to remove the cover and line up the gear inside. Great job and Thanks a lot.

    If you still have this mower, it’d be great if you could do a video reviewing the throttle and choke adjustments. That is, the position of the carburetor fans when it’s in choke, full throttle and low idle. Thank you!

    Can the governor be eliminated for tractor pulling? Yes I’m aware it might over rev. But I’m asking if it can be simply deleted?

    Hi, we replaced the pin on the governor, how do I tell if it’s working? It still seems to be running fast.

    • @fixtinkerreviewrepeat3074
      @fixtinkerreviewrepeat3074  Год назад

      If it is still running fast, the governor may need further adjustment. Taryl Fixes All and a few other RUclips channels cover the proper adjustment. I got lucky with mine and it was nearly perfect for my tractor.

    Where can you find a rebuild kit for these engines. I cant find anything.

      In my experience with riding mower repairs I have found the basic parts are interchangeable with similar models.

      Not my area of expertise, but I'd try going to Kohler directly. If you find a rebuild kit a follow-up comment would be appreciated.

      The one I've been refixing for 2 months now the engine had been recently rebuilt they probably rushed and messed up from all the stuff I've already fixed that they done wrong so they have replacement parts or it couldn't have gotten rebuilt
      Unless they just took it all apart and cleaned all the old parts off in a parts washer

    How many man hours into that repair?

    • @fixtinkerreviewrepeat3074

      Took me about 6 hours. A skilled mechanic would probably do it in 3-4 hours. Thanks for watching.

    Wouldn't it have been easier to drain the oil before opening up the case ?

    • @fixtinkerreviewrepeat3074
      @fixtinkerreviewrepeat3074  3 года назад +4

      Yep it was. Probably not clear in the video, but that's what I did. The small amt of oil in the engine when I turned it upside down was from nooks and crannies draining down into the top of the engine. Thanks for watching and your comment!
