This is why stuff like this is just growing in popularity every year. For every person who claims to boycott stuff like this and complain about microtransactions there's a guy willing to drop 400$ for a single character. This is the path most games are going to take and I'm honestly surprised at how slow the big companies have been about pushing it.

This is crazy. It took me nearly a year of grinding to get him and an extra week of getting him to G12 before G13 hit and if a new player has $400, they could have in minutes what took me months. I mostly agree with Ahnald here, f2p may not be dead, but it sure is a foot into the grave.

Honest, ive been a day one player, and a 100% f2p player. At this point, just enjoy the game, gather character you want/like and F the rest!! Dont spend ANY dime on this game, that, tbh... is on its downfall
Don’t be discouraged, there will always be someone higher or stronger than you. Play within your limits to what you enjoy, that’s what matters! If you’re not number one in the shard it don’t matter, just grind and enjoy!
I started this game not long after it game out on my Android phone. When Qui Gon was basically the meta. Life gets in the way. Take a couple of years off and start a new account on my now appple account. Now someone can start and do this. I don’t have the luxury of the $100 bundle, I’m disabled. I watch your videos for entertainment but this is depressing. Anyway you can throw one of those bundles over here? Lol

The game is still fun F2P. You just have to accept a few truths. You'll never, ever compete at the top of Arenas. And your progress is going to be pretty slow. As long as you can live with those general truths...the game still functions just fine.

I’m in your shard (Bearjew). I saw you got JKR while scrolling through the arena ranks and my heart sank. First thought was how the heck you did that so soon. Then I came here and saw this. Thank you for sharing your knowledge! Also very glad you’re not going to just sit at the top and dominate us all!
If CG was to try and fix this, they could put all players who bought the Hyperdrive bundle into their own arena shard.
They will never, ever do this. Why would people want to pay if part if paying is that you get moved into a more difficult area?
That’s equivalent to moving all P2P to their own shard and F2P to their own shard. Makes no sense
I didn't hyper bundle, but those players pay to have guaranteed top 10 arena slot. Only way is mixing them with totally free accounts. It also annoys old shard cuz now I am down for 240 ranks playing in too 500 only.
I was f2p, my account was about a year. And even with a year old account......the hyperdrive bundle looked so much attractive.
So I spent my first money on this game, and it is still so far the only money I spent. The hyperdrive bundle was still a massive boost to my year old account.....so just imagine a day 1 account.....it is more than helping, it's game changing.
Sometimes I feel nervous about spending 100$ on something, then I remember there are some people who have dropped 400$ to destroy their shards
Everyone time of my friends has seen me playing swgoh, they always want to know about it. My first answer is, don't even ask. I'm too deep, you'd never catch up and you need to spend too much money at this point. This new situation with the HD bundle only emphasizes what I have been saying
I completely agree. This game has always been questionable in terms of game design (skinner boxes), but this pay-to-win has cemented my feeling that I will never, ever recommend this game to anyone. But I won't stop playing either.
That reminds of when I was a kid... All my family were smokers so I asked them if it was a nice habit. They ALL said "don't start! It's too expensive, it's not a healthy thing to do and it's bad for you" (while continuing to puff away at their cigarettes...)

I think you have a valid perspective on the game as someone whose doing a second account and comparing yourself to others in the shard, but new players actually need to progress to learn the content in manageable bites, and they don't care that they're falling behind pay to win people. You accept it, and do the best you can with what you have. Maybe you never catch up, but everything you got, you earned.
Sure but how long do new players need to learn for? A year seems like a long time.
I would also like to see levels come in faster than they do, but not instantly. It took me about four months to get to level 85, and the only money I put in was for the 3 year anniversary crystals discount, one time.

Recently celebrated the 1st anniversary of my FTP account, I log in every single day and spend 10-30 minutes on daily activities, raids etc. My team consists of Palpatine, Tarkin, Thrawn, Dooku and Vader all gear 12 with three zetas overall, I have 600,000 Galactic power, less than Gary unleashed over here got in a couple hours
That’s less power than just the hyperdrive bundle. I guess when he said “this is a year’s worth of progress” he meant it ._.

As F2P player since the hyperdrive bundle I’ve noticed a lot more Jedi knight Revan teams and it really changes squad arena and makes it more difficult
So I finally decided to spend money on the hyperdrive after watching this video. Created a new account and everything to unlock JKR fast and be top 5 in arena easily like Ahnald mentions in this video. I must be unlucky or something because I had to spend $400 just to get the requirements and I cant even get JKR because 1) they dont have good enough mods, 2) I ran out of ability mats and they are sitting at level 5/6 special abilities (7 for bastila and jolee), and 3) I dont have the gear requirements to gear them higher than gear 7 (except bastila which i leveled to gear 11). Also, my top 50 in arena has like 25 JKRs or full geo squad. This is the first and the last time I spend money on a game. I love your videos Ahnald but you cost me $400 and nothing to show for it.

I definitely feel the frustration, I've spent about 20 bucks on the game and I'm having fun but it feels like even if I play consistently without missing days, it'll take years to achieve anything.
why can't they just make it so there are F2P Servers and then when you spend you get put into a paid server or a more mature one? That way makes it more balanced.

A year as a F2P player made me one of my guild's strongest members. The grind really does work, but whaling works so much faster

That's crazy. I skipped the Jedi Knight Revan event TWICE due to lack of Gear on my characters. Never spent a single dollar for this game. Since the Journey Guide came, it kinda eases the tension knowing you can do the event on your own time and not wait for 6-8 months. But seeing that differences with the Hyperdrive....it's unreal. I would've gotten it within a heartbeat.
I’m level 85 and I’m stuck with my paplaptine team, I’m leveling up clones but I think I’m screwed in the long run. Its prolly what I get for taking a long break of this game lol
Revan was the main reason I even started playing this game. People kept talking about how Revan was canon after SW:TRS I mainly wanted to play as Revan without playing KOTOR (I have it on mobile but the controls, ugh). As much as I enjoy Revan, there’s no way I would spend money like this.

So for quick math. It takes 111 days to break even on crystals earnings if you spend $300 to get JKR day one and hold #1 the entire time. If you can hold #1 for 4 months, you've "saved" yourself money by hyperspace bundle+JKR unlock spending. Or rather you'll have earned the equivalent of 3 Vaults of crystals. (assuming people who don't buy the hyperdrive bundle can't break top 100)
The hyperdrive bundle isn't for "new players" ( I'm sure CG would love if the did buy it). It's for veteran players starting a new account wanting to get a leg up on arena. They put the facade up that it is for new players as to not seem as greedy.

A main issue, aside from the drums to level to unlock battles, is the random mishmash of toons that don’t synergize at all that everyone starts with.
They should do an overhaul that makes it so the first characters that players can get early game are from the same faction and form their own squad.
In an ideal world, I’d say make it Phoenix for Light and either Seppies or Troopers for Dark. Some may need to be changed to unlock at 2 stars. But these squads not only introduce new players to teams that have synergy and make the grind for battles, but as ahnald has pointed out, investing in them goes a long way to unlock legendaries
Or maybe not those ones specifically but i think letting new players start off with a faction squad early will be better than Consular, Geo Soldier, Clone Trooper, etc
That's why I quit SWGOH last year. Every now and then I bought something's but this is taking the P2W aspect to the extreme!
Its discouraging as a content creator and ftp player. Only 2 months in and at level 47 but then watched ypur hyperdrive bundle video. I was like so depressed (still...) and considering trying another game but I love Star Wars. Thank you for at least exposing it so hopefully it gets the right attention and cause a change (positive) for current and upcoming new players. Thanks man.

Completely agree, needs to be more forgiving for new players and players who can’t afford to throw 30 euros out the window for a pack let alone hundreds for a mobile phone game. The best way to get new players in to the game is to let them choose their favourite character from a list of beginning characters to get them invested in the game. Imagine Startup the game and you’re asked who do you want to lead your dark side team with Dooku, Boba, Vader etc and depending in the “avatar” you choose, you get a nice newbie friendly quest chain which when completed keeps the shards rolling in for their team mates helping you get a group together more quickly. Boba for example gets you quests which when done throw some BH team staple shards at you like Bossk and at the end of the quest chain some crystals and a free BH pack with a guaranteed unlock of a non duplicate character. Obviously the same thing for the light side too, to help new players get the ball rolling.

I've only bought the dark side starter pack for $5, which unlocked Dooku for me. I've skyrocketed in Squad Arena to the 1000-500 spot very easily with that one simple pack.

I got him about a year after he came out. I wasn't target-farming him immediately when he came out, I was still trying to finish off CLS and Jedi-Rey. But once you start targeting him, it still takes months and puts you further and further behind on the newest thing that just arrived.

Only takes one year to get him f2p try and if you get atleast 1 shard of each character everyday by the end of the year your guaranteed to unlock him I dont have jedi revan yet because I farmed last yr for darth revan got him around christmas
This was a great video with a great point to be made. It's pretty sad that no one really knows how much of an advantage you will have buying the hyperdrive bundle. Until you see the difference with the two accounts.

I’m 1 mill gp and have been pushing for revan since around 500k and I’m still like 50 jolee shards away and he can play for a couple hours and get revan. Shit system
wow, this is wild. Can't say I'm too surprised considering the more recent moves from CG, but it's still a big slap in the face.
Yeah, no, I like earning my opportunities, I feel that I would just be instantly turned off from the game if I was instantly at lvl 85 and didn't have to do any of the missions, which Is what the majority of the game is from f2p players like myself. Making everyone have access to all the battles for siming day one ruins the journey; others, if they wish, may pay their way into getting their favorite characters and bypassing the journey, but I sure as hell won't.
I 100 percent agree with this video.Ive been playing this game for a little bit over 3 years now and am free to play.I have played on and grinded 2 accounts in this whole time and still have not been capable of getting legendary characters and genuinely enjoying the game due to how long it takes to get to 85.For a long time I had thought I couldn’t get certain characters until I’m 85 where it truly starts to matter but on top of that how long it takes to get your characters to higher stars in addition to the gearing which takes the most time by far.I hope this game can be enjoyable for ftp players in the future but for how long I’ve been playing I don’t see them making any big changes.
This makes my 2 years of playing this look like a joke...
You should buy the hypderdrive bundle on your main account to show people what it looks like if you buy it at endgame
I appreciate your views on this. I had an old account that I just started up playing again. I was stuck in arena as I was severely underpowered. Felt I had to start a new account to be on equal footing. But once I was grinding with Jedi Counselor & some Ewok, I just didn’t want to go thru the grind again. So I bought the pack. So now, where I wanted to be on equal footing, I bought myself a huge advantage over f2p. I thought the pack was expensive but had great value for someone who wanted to keep playing.
aAs a player that restarted playing a few months ago, i did not consider that early phase of grinding to be too much of an issue because of how you feel after you can finally adquire that character that you've been aiming, for like JKR in my case, which wouldn't exist if it was too easy to get those certain characters. But now, knowing how easily JKR can be adquired if you just whale a bit of money, while the F2P community has to whale time and effort is quite heartbreaking.
i think giving everybody lvl 85 or unlocking evry battle takes away a lot of fun at the begining but there needs to be something to speed everything up, maybe give non hyperdrive bundle players double drops until they are lvl 80, more missions and rewards or somethimg like this.
Tbh being f2p like me gives you more satisfaction when i finally unlocked palpatine and thrawn i was so happy cuz i had been farming phoenix shards for along time. I mean if ur p2w u just give the money u collected from christmas and boom jedi revan on day one rn im dreaming of unlock jedi revan cuz im only lvl 60
Maybe they should give new players who don’t use the hyperdrive bundle a huge bonus once they achieve level 85? Like, when they get there, they can be awarded some zetas, gear, crystals, etc. That can make new players not feel too bad for not whaling out at the beginning.
I’ve been grinding Darth Revan for the last 3 or 4 weeks now only using the 350 pack passively, call it luck but I’ve been able to get all but juhani to 7 stars and I expect to have her done in less than a week now. But I’m glad those packs got put in, like you said it’s nowhere near the amount mobile gamer spent but it’s seriously decreasing how much is needed to unlock, and you can do it f2p by saving gems. Granted I had most of them to 4 stars before the journey guide dropped but that’s nothing in terms of hang shards you need towards the latter end of the grind.
I’m a F2P player currently at lvl76 and I think the simple fix for all this would have been to separate Bundlers into separate Arena and Fleet shards. If they did that I wouldn’t have any issues with them spending. I was lvl 59 when the Bundle came out and went from top 50-100 in my arena shard to lucky to break the top 500 at payout. Also I held off a few days to try and not get put into the same fleet shard but can barely crack the top 200 there because of them...
I think they should add something at the $10 price point that just gets you level 85 and the sim unlocks. That would allow new players to be very nearly FTP, without being impossibly far behind people who purchased the hyperdrive bundle. It wouldn't really devalue the hyperdrive bundle for baby whales either, since it still includes so much more.
I agree. I have one account that has been entirely free to play for going on 2 years and is only 3mil. I have a lot of extra time on my hands because of my job so I made a second free to play account on my tablet, and that account has been going for 3 months and is only 200k level 75. There are full G13R7 DR and JKR in my arena. I have been very focused in my character farming and no where near that. I don’t even have a 7* team yet since I chose to go for Seps. The gap between that account and anyone who spent money is ridiculous

Well, this is very premature thought but it just came to mind. Maybe the average level of a squad should be considered when the arena unlocked? obviously the unlocking of arena with the hyper drive bundle will net the hyper-drive purchasers together and the free to play will be the level that the arena unlocks at so that might help. then the other arenas can be pooled by length of time played and GP? my reasoning with ships is they will be like 600k at 85 with 1 day played so the hyper-bundle folks get looped together.
So I decided to follow your lead Grand Admiral and created a new account following the seperatists might. While playing arena I stumbled upon the greatest 1v1 in SWGOH history... Two g4 clone wars Chewbaccas slugging it out for 4 minutes
Thanks mate, threw in a little over 300 and got him. Unfortunately I lack the mats to up him, since I didn’t knew this feature at the start(I’m a beginner) and did a more broad build of more characters ie. Phoenix / Jedi etc.
This is a difficult problem. I think more frequent double drops may encourage new players to spend a little money on crystals/ energy and doubling the XP gained on everything may be a decent start
Starting out at the very beginning level of F2P needs to be bumped up for sure as it takes a while to just get things unlocked and to really be able to enjoy the game. With this said, it is a good incentive and gives the experience of a personal gaming achievement to be able to unlock say "ships" or certain events. The hyper drive bundle alleviates these "road block issues" but at a cost. I think starting everyone at level 50 with a choice of 10 characters (including prior marquee but not event characters like revan, malak, etc.) unlocked at 4 stars for free to play. I addition you get 300 sim tickets, 500 crystals, 50 mk3 ability materials, 20 omegas and 1 zeta. This will make the beginning of the game a lot more fun to play, will keep people playing and add diversity to the beginning of the SWGOH experience. The Hyperdrive bundle would not be so bad then but getting revan before 6-12 months should be hindered in some way.
as someone whos played this game for over 2 years and only paid 80 for stuff in this game, i often think about just quitting the game because of how frustrating it is to farm all the good characters
Once you get out to the first team, the F2P experience becomes A LOT easier. I am mad that it took me 6 months to get him and people can pay money to get better versions of him

I've been playing for about a year, and just unlocked Jedi Knight Revan, seems fair lol. And they probably will have a better geared Revan than me...
I'm 100% F2P. I accepted right at the start that I would never keep up with people who spend money on it (whether through the HD bundle or just general whaling). And so I play at my own speed, which is fun.
I do think they should remove the level restrictions on the all the different battles though, that way as soon as you finish 1 tier of LS or DS battles, you the next one is then unlocked.
I completely agree with Ahnald the hyperdrive bundle has ruined the f2p experience. The new porpoise of the game is to gain money rather than grow the companies fan base.
I also agree with all your suggestions on how to fix the game. It takes months to go from level 1 to 85 and then it takes another few months to get Jedi knight Revan, Darth Revan, and know the galactic legends, while it can be bought for about 800$ and take less than 3 hours to do so.
I started a new account last month since my google play account had infinite load screens and cg couldnt help me sort it out.
Im level 44 and im enjoying the game so much, taking it in my own stride. Ive spent exactly £28 on the game getting my most favourite star wars character darth vader and few other beginner stuff that helps alot. My advice to the new players would be to just enjoy yourself and play for your most favourite star wars characters no matter how good they are.
I quit like 3+ years ago probably, started as F2P and made a droid team way back and managed to stay top 1-5 even against whales which i was proud of, but eventually they pulled too far ahead and i lost motivation. However seeing this pack, must be soul crushing for new players.
Gosh mate, I've been following you form the very beginning and also I'm almost completely f2p (2 packs purchased around holiday seasons). This game has never been so f2p unfriendly. We were discussing in the guild that if we had to start after the introduction of the Hyperdrive bundle we'll not be playing the game at all most probably. Thanks for raising the issue, because the community should be concerned with this step of CG!
Honestly, given that (as you've shown in later videos) Imperial Troopers can wreck some of these teams... it's not so bad for the f2p. :)
I have been thinking the game is unbalanced in general and agree that they should have ships unlocked at lvl 1 or have the ships have their own leveling system because it doesn't make sense to unlock it at lvl 60 and then have to power up all these lvl 1 ships to your current level. It is obviously done on purpose to increase the consumers desire to pay to get ahead or catch up.
My suggestion to CG is to separate free to play people from pay to play people like in separate shards. Because there will never be a way for free to play people to get ahead or find any enjoyment out of the game when you know you are so far behind everyone else in your shard. e.g. I started an alt account and was impressed that there were people around my level in the top 50, but after a week they had all been pushed out by the P2P/Hyper drivers. Definitely puts a damper on my experience overall. If you read this thank you for your time and stay frosty, commander!
Took me 2 years to get to level 65 on F2P, took a break, and now you can get to 85 instantly.
I have never got Revan Jedi Knight and I am playing this game (all free) since 2 years. It took me roughly 6 months (also using the gems I gained progressively) to unlock the characters needed for Darth Revan. It is unacceptable that someone who spends just 400$ with the hyperdrive bundle arrives at my level within one day. Most of us dedicated every single day to arrive at the level we are after years without spending any money, cause I think, unless you are a RUclipsr like in fact Ahnald who gains money from being one of the best in the game, there would be actually no point and just a waste of money
I've played for a year and a half and barely got Revan after 12 months as a low-end dolphin. That's insane lol

I agree with you Grand Admiral, we should be worried! I have been f2p since 2016 and it would be crazy if your hyberdrive bundle can make you get Darth Revan before me...
I know this video was posted 5 months ago but for those that didn’t know there are hidden and secret packs like JKR for basically all legendary characters
Just starting this game, and really the only thing scaring me away from continuing to play are these videos where I'm constantly being told I'm months and years behind what everyone else is doing. I would not have been aware of these issues had I never seen this video and other content similar to it. I wasn't having an issue progressing in the game, but now I feel no motivation to keep playing unless I buy something whether it be this stupid expensive bundle or crystals. Whatever the case may, I'm failing to see when ANY of this spending pays off. The game was pretty fun starting out - all the possibilities and newness of a 'build your team' - style game. Now, I just don't think this is worth it F2P or otherwise. Thanks for that.
It is my personal opinion is that CG_Carrie's replacement is a bean counter and does not care 1 bit about the health of the game. Every action since Carrie left has been to push the breakneck speed of spending. Considering Carrie left in July some items will be in transit, starting 8/23/2019 501st Rework, 9/11/2019 Relics (I think this was the first decision after Carrie left). OCT/2019? Malak fiasco. 10/30/2019 Y-wing & Hyena. 11/26/2019 Geo LS TB (Created chaos in guilds and player base) tweaked by Bane Venom. 11/26/2019 Malevolence, Ki-Adi-Mundi, and ARC Trooper. 11/26/2019 Bundle mania goes into full force (The real content of the replacement). 12/09/2019 Hyperdrive Bundle. 12/18/2019 RH Finn and more Bundle Mania (Spend, spend, spend) need to get to 1 billion dollars, Have a Merry Christmas.
If you can not tell I have nothing but disdain for Carrie's replacement or the lack of spine to stand up to EA. Hopefully this is a short term pattern of behavior but only time will tell.

GoH is the number one game I've played that is almost unbearable if you aren't spending money. The most frustrating thing is how long it takes to farm characters. 5 attempts a day and you may not get a single shard. Or you can shell out money and save months of time. I really wish players weren't SEVERELY penalized for not paying money. Keep bringing this to light and let's get this changed!
On a fresh shard, getting to top of arena day 1, the amount of free crystals alone you'd get would be far more valuable than the $200 you'd spend on those packs. If you're willing to buy hyperdrive, you'll clearly be willing to buy crystals, and you'd get far more in value back. It's crazy.
