Toro Timecutter zero turn mower shuts off when handles moved FIX

- A quick temporary fix for the zero turn mower if it shuts off when steering handles are pulled in. If the new arm safety switches don’t work once I install them, then the problem is probably the control module. I’m not sure if I would spend the money on that or just keep the switches depressed and brakes off?
Just disconnected my battery and sprayed Mass Air Flow sensor cleaner on to the switches and then took an air hose and blew it out. It worked without having to pull the switches out. I'm guessing the switches were very dirty after 15 years of use. Thank you for the advice. Without your video I was ready to buy a new mower.
Wow! That’s good news. Thanks!
This is one of the best videos I’ve ever watched. That’s the problem I had with my lawnmower. Why does Toro Timecutter has the worse with electronic issues❓
Right on, thanks!
I have this now
This video got me on the right track. I had no idea where to start. Parts are on order. Thank you.
You’re welcome!
My mower started doing this, and your video helped me troubleshoot the problem and fix it. Thanks so much!
NICE!!!
It is not the switches. It's something further down the circuit.
They are working correctly if it shuts off when the handles are moved in. It's telling you something else is wrong.
Thanks for the content. A good way to continue mowing til you get the switches. With shipping being delayed sometimes, this is a great way to keep your lawn or someone else’s lawn maintained.
NP thanks for watching!
I’m having the same problem with my 2021 time cutter.
Hello there great video I changed the safety switches on the handles and I didn’t change my seat switch just yet however I think it is working fine because it shuts off when I get up with the blades running as well, still shutting when put on PTO. Should I try changing the seat switch ?
Yea, that’s an easy one to change. Hopefully that does it for you
@@oxford821 how comes that the seat switch can be bad, if when I get up with the blades engaging the mowers shut off ?
That is what it is supposed to do, idk. Seems like some circuit is getting disrupted somewhere
What do you think I should at next ?
The PTO switch is the last one to change. If that doesn’t work, maybe swap out the part they all run to. I think it’s a black circuit box
Tyvm, saved me some troubleshooting. Got it to drive w/o stalling but now turning on the blades makes it stall too. Troubleshooting continues.....
Good luck brother
I had the same problem. It turned out to be the metal rods going to the brake controller were bent. Thus they were too tight and the brake controller wasn’t able to rotate freely. Disconnect both brake rods , (I tied mine up so they wouldn’t drag and bend more) and then see if your problem has gone away.
Good call!
What if the replacing the safety switches don’t fix ? I got couple new safety switches at my local store and the problem still persists.
I have THE SAME ISSUE! I have just installed two new switches and it still dies when I pull the handles together.
Have you figured out the problem?
Then it might be a bad break control module, bad pto switch. Check make sure the pto wire isn't loose
A man after my own heart...jury rigging to get it going. I have the same problem and did the same thing.
👍
thank you sir for this video, I have the same mower same problems...its under warranty but I took it back to the the shop 4 times but they can't fix it ....I'll send them this info..
Nice!!!!!
Process of elimination started off great
Beings as it shuts off from both levers eliminates those individual switches.
Sounds like you need to move back towards switch release mech behind Battery.
Best; Tom
Thanks!
What if it only does that once you try to move? Not when the handles are in, but throwing the handles back out fixes it
Did take the brake off?? It’s supposed to cut out the motor if the brake is still on.
Yea, I disconnected them underneath
This was a great video and worked mostly for me. The mower was turning off with the handles moved forward. I tried your approach at it worked. The only problem I am now having is when the mower blades are engaged the mower cuts off. Any suggestions?
Thanks, I would try a new PTO switch first. That would be the easiest thing to try for the blade issue
Thanks, I would try a new PTO switch first. That would be the easiest thing to try for the blade issue
@@oxford821 I bypassed the PTO switch and that seems to be the problem. Thanks again!!!
@@LovintheUTube Right on !
ive been working on mine all day...started blowing out starting fuse...found a crimped red wire on that fuse box. after that it stopped blowing fuse out and it started but when i engage the handles or the pto it turns off...also the seat safety switch ita not working, it turns on even if im not sitting on seat. i just replaced the ignition switch cause the other one went bad, its an after market so dont k ow if that might be causing for all the safety switches to act up...dont know what to do
Does pushing the handles forward immediately after bringing them in keep it from dying if you do it fast enough? Are the switches only depressed when they are brought in?
The switches are spring loaded. Soon as the handles are brung in, the switches are disengaged
Great video man. I didn't know About those switches, but I do know .
Right on!!
So was it fixed when u changed the safety switches?
Yes!
0:16 on craftsman by pass switches pull pro and engine shuts OFF! Some safety switches have 4wires if you tape closed it’s telling the pto don’t engage
👍
No i😊 I’ll😊 yg
This worked fine for mine but when I bought new switches it's back to stalling when pulling the steering handles in to drive like before. 🤔
What is the correct name of the switches?
Thanks
I’m not sure off hand. I went onto Toro’s parts web site. You need the model number of your mower. The site has schematics of the entire mower. You can “add to cart” and purchase
Hey there. Any chance you can tell me the model number of this mower ? Is it a 7xxxx something …? Im 3 hrs away from mine for 2 weeks ajd need to buy abnew starter lol. Yhanks in advance.

@@oxford821 many thanks 👍👍👍
I had the exact symptoms with my SS5000, but my problem turned out to be the brake control module. I have it bypassed for now, until my new module arrives, and it works fine.
Nice work
Hey regarding your brake , does it turn off when you push the brake off? How did you bypass?
So I have the same issue replaced switches and brake control module and still doing it any advice
Dang. I watched other videos where they had to replace the whole control module. Maybe that’s whats wrong with yours?
Already done that also
@@frankspellman4868 Maybe the PTO switch? I don’t know what the heck else could be?
Yeah I hear that iam on my wits end
And if it also turns off when I turn on the blades, what could it be?
I have the same issue/problem
This is what I have.
But I highly doubt my switched both went bad at same time
What happened
I think even if one side goes bad, maybe it trips the circuit
my left handle will creep inward and shut off the mower ,,, what makes the handle creep inward ? any ideas
Dang, I’m not sure about that one. I’m thinking the linkage from the handle to the trans is to tight
Very detailed, On point
Great diy video.
Thanks!!
I was having the same issue and after changing them handle switches it still did the same thing it didn’t fix the problem when I pull the drive handles in it shuts off so I’m still troubleshooting it
That sucks, did you test the safety switch under the seat?
@@oxford821 yes the seat switch is working so I am assuming my issue might be the actual brake module that releases the brakes what you think?
Also have same problem, replaced seat and control arm switches however when arms are left in outer position engine will stop in a few seconds unless I move one or either lever slightly in to allow engine to continue running?
That seems backwards. The engine should stay running when handles are outwards.
God Bless you your videos has helped me alot.
NP! Thank you
Thank you so much for this! This was super helpful!
Right on!!!
Mine turned out to be the brake safety switch. Half of the switch was working, but the the other half was not.
It take a multimeter to find this fault.
Thanks for the info
Why not just replace the switches while you're there???
I didn’t have the news ones at the time, had to wait for them to come in
And also some people don't have the money or resources to replace it
Disabling the brakes???? The safety switches can be pulled apart to just clean their internal contacts with spray contact cleaner, and should have been the first thing completed. From here, if you still have problems with switches working correctly, then it time to trouble shoot the brake control module.
Damm it. I wish I woulda thought about that first! Good idea
Yep contact cleaner is a must for all shops now
Big help thank you
Read above, that's exactly what I did and it worked!!
Thing is who keep extra switch for there mowers and wait for ordering parts a week or two
Knowing how to get by is what’s important now
Just retired the mower, I bought a new one. I’ll do a video soon as the weather gets better
Thanks!
Thank you, and God bless you!
This just happened to me today - havent looked into it yet but am curious if it may be low on Hydrostatic fluid...
I don’t think the transmission are serviceable on these lower end mowers? I never noticed a drain or fill on them. Let me know if they can be because I’ll change the fluid if possible
@@oxford821 I looked and there isnt any level switch of any sorts - I noticed a filler tube under the left side of the seat though.
In regards to that three dollar box for the brakes, I am rewiring the safety's to where the box does the brakes only, and put my own relay of some sorts in place - some rather bad reviews on this design.
@@williamhusseyjr1143 Sound like a plan.
Love the education on this !! thank you !!
Right on, NP!!
Need to try an check this tomorrow for my neighbors mower
Hope it works out for you
@@oxford821 this was the Issue..
@@coppertopv365 Did you replace the switches?
@@oxford821 no sir, I looked online for them, and I'm going to check with John Deere tomorrow.. it seems like the sensors, but it could also be electrical.. so I'm going to check wiring tomorrow, then inquire with the John Deere place after that. I have an old 01 Craftsman regular mower that works I'll use until I get the kinks worked out. I think the carburetor will need Replacing.. the butterfly valve isnt operating correctly, and I already took the carb off an serviced it, cleaned it, and reattached the carburetor..
But I hold them Lever Buttons in, and I can make it work so I'm on the correct track..
Thank you
Great Job Thanks for the tip
NP!
Big help 6hank you
NP!
Thank you, helped!
Right on! NP
Dang use a ohm meter to check switch’s and system
Mine did exactly the same thing after transport...I jumpered the seat switch and it works perfectly again.
Nice work
Some times this happens to me it’s usually just a sticky ignition give the key a little half turn like your shutting it off yull find it was just out of position and then you can engage the arms
Wow, thanks
This just worked for me
It's seat switch not engaging bro 😅 your bottom is too light weight
What!!!
Break box
?
LIUKS
Nice thanks!
Just go get two safety switches.
Gotm!!
