I was in 5th grade. Walked home for lunch and on the way back, stopped at a school friend's house so we could walk back together. He met me at the door and said, "C'mon in, I wanna show you something." There was nobody else in the house. He took me into his much older brother's room, where there was a linear tracking turntable cued up with a record. He dropped the needle and cranked up the volume and this song changed my world.
Ian Bairnson was a master of that get-in, get-out solo. All the big APP hits have it. Brilliant combo of classic blues kicks, arpeggios, and a litt bit of magic. He recently passed away. One of the greats!
This channel consistantly has the best content of all lesson channels I've seen. And as an added bonus, the lessons are taught by Tim Allens old neighbor Wilson.
Just a quick thank-you for the lesson. Clear, concise, and correctly picks up nuances that some others I looked at missed (to my ear, at least). I especially like that you QUICKLY show 2-3 diferent ways to play key chords, like the Ab/C. Thanks lots!
Spot on as usual. I have always liked the Alan Parson's hits. Tasty solos - from that era, Eddie Money, Brian Adams, Cars, Toto, et al ... these guys put pro work into the compositions. As you say, the solos are clean, melodic and memorable almost as their own tune within a tune. Chris DeGarmo's solos on Empire - another example of uncluttered, catchy, hook work. Steely Dan is one more, particularly Carlton's work on Royal Scam. Those solos had it all - intermodal changes, following the chords, arpeggiation, harmonic structure. Pure master pro work. Thanks for putting up yet another bomber tutorial. Always a fan of your work.
Super cool! I heard this tune on the radio today and thought, I'll learn that and stump my buddies! Thanks for sharing man! You saved me hours and hours of work!
6 years too late finding this gem! I’ve followed you for years but never knew you’d already covered APP, awesome job! Side note, it occurs to me with your level of musical skill and obvious talent that perhaps you’re one of the many guitarists Don Fagen used in one of his songs over the years! If not, it absolutely could be true! Cheers to you.
This song is in my cruising queue. I recall it back in the day on radio and always appeals to any genre music lover. Your tone is excruciatingly perfect. Dialed in on solo and rhythm parts. You have some of my fav songs in lessons. Oh and your Zebra Paul is stunning.
Outstanding lesson here. You make it so easy to learn! I knew the Solo by ear but didn't realize to play the last phrase up on the neck ( 5th down to 1st ). Rock on...
Hey SUAP, You pick some of the greatest songs to share. I realized I had the ability all along to play this favorite and just never took the time. Wish I hadn't waited so long. Keep that FM rock coming!
Just found this lesson, fantastic solo and very clearly taught as usual! I'm sure more Iain Bairson solos would go down well, Turn of a Friendly Card, Same Old Sun.Such a tasteful, melodic player,so much to be learned from his style! Thanks again. Stephen (Scotland)
Totally agree about the vocals. then looking at back of album cover thinkin Hmm. Who is Alan parsons. why do I like this song and not the others. now I get it. and love it all. I just learned it now thanks man
I love how precisely you nailed Ian Bairnson's picking dynamics. That is a huge part of the energetic feeling of that brilliant solo. Oh, and I like Pilot's song Magic and am not ashamed to admit it! LOL The whole I Robot album is brilliant.
I had to learn this song for tonight and I was short on time and normally I work songs out myself but had a look for a guitar lesson. So happy to see my favourite teacher doing a lesson for this and it brought a smile to my face as I knew it would be bang on. Thanks a lot and you saved me a good bit of time.
Ian Bairnson is a Magician and this lesson is full of Magic too. For me - APP lessons - the most interesting on your channel. Thank you very much for your great work and please make even more APP lessons!
Great! I love Parsons and I love your lessons. I like the context you put in your videos talking about records, guitar players, etc. Sometimes I miss the part when you talk about the sound of the guitar in the song but always you do a remarcable explanation of what to play even how to fake other instruments parts. Thank you very much for your work. Regards from Argentina.
I have said before Ian one of those great underappreciated axe men I Robot very neat as AP and late Eric Wolfson used many singers when Eric did not sing from Lenny, to the Hoilies Alan White, to Colin Bluestone and one of Ian's coolest guitar solos is on the Alan Parsons Project song Primetime..great lesson Andy
Ian Bairnson played this magic solo (he was on early Kate Bush as well, if I remember rightly). - Lenny Zakatek of course the great voice. Both are added their creativity and talent to APP. There´s Lenny Zakatek here on RUclips about recording this gem. - Thanks for getting into the deeper structure and for showing how this guitar magic was created. Great video!
Like how you add a little background info into your lessons . Fav by AP is the outro solo on Turn of a Friendly Card , pt 2. Whomever is playing that has killer tone and is so fluent .
Great lesson as always with your calm and professional demeanor.....it's obvious you can play - but to me, you seem like you would be an outstanding teacher face-face....maybe you are? Jeff Marshall plays live with Parsons now and that guy is a monster - humble though
Great song ! I played this in my band a few years ago using a fast doubling chorus effect over the solo then a ultimately switched over to a Keeley 30 ms Double Tracker to nail the effect. Good stuff ! 🎸
i play classical guitar but i love this ver y song. i dont know the eléctrica guitar technic and tour vídeo approach s me to understand this song that i love. great work . thanks
Thanks for this one. Love Alan Parsons project. Please do more of his stuff. Plus you might find he had more than two singers for the songs. Sort of like Santana.
"Fooled around and fell in love", Great song with a great solo by Elvin! Maybe a future lesson? Anyway interestingly David Paton who was the lead singer in Pilot and wrote "It's Magic" is on bass on this track, so it's like Pilot meets Alan Parsons Project!
Wow another great lesson , you helped me with Comfortably Numb and here's another cool tune to work on from my youth ! Thanks for all your time and effort ! PS I'll stand up and say I liked Pilot too !
Thanks to your genius and enthusiasm i get great joy in learning and developing my technique. I hope you will also share a lesson on the opening masterpiece - I Robot - some day. :))
Thank you very much for this! I loved this song and solo since the first time I heard it as a child! Would you please do a tutorial for "damn if I do"?
Hi Andy ....could you possibly share your tuning method video. I watched it but didn't have time to commit all of it to memory and now can't find it on your site or RUclips ????? Excellent channel, one of the Best, Thank you soooo much for your efforts !!!
Hey Shudupa , you deserve a sub and got one for several reasons.. the stuff you showed on rhythms is phenomenal -I think I can actually learn to play that and make sound like two guitars like you do Also, just several coincidences: like I just discovered Lenny Zackatek too.!
Demo & TABS: www.shutupandplay.ca/i-wouldnt-want-to-be-like-you--electric-rhythm--solo.html
Shutup & Play - guitar tutorials incredible tutorials!!!! Any chance of doing some JethroTull? Maybe - Minstrel in the gallery

Frickin' killer solo. I see a little Gilmour in there too. I Robot is one of my desert island albums. Thanks!
I see some Larry Carlton as see
Your tone is to die for!!! And you pull out all these great songs that I love but mostly have forgotten about because you rarely hear them anymore.
Me too. I can't get this song and guitar out of my head.
I've got to say that is THE best sound I've ever heard anyone use for the rhythm & lead parts of this song. Great teaching too.
This channel consistantly has the best content of all lesson channels I've seen. And as an added bonus, the lessons are taught by Tim Allens old neighbor Wilson.
Haha!
Yea..the guy you cannot see!
At least he focuses on the guitar, and not on himself.
Just a quick thank-you for the lesson. Clear, concise, and correctly picks up nuances that some others I looked at missed (to my ear, at least). I especially like that you QUICKLY show 2-3 diferent ways to play key chords, like the Ab/C. Thanks lots!
one of the greatest guitar solos of all time, and totally makes this song...
Genius. Thank you. Great to listen to as I remember his passing.
Spot on as usual. I have always liked the Alan Parson's hits. Tasty solos - from that era, Eddie Money, Brian Adams, Cars, Toto, et al ... these guys put pro work into the compositions. Even when you cover a tune that I can already play, I still learn something. Great lesson as always.
Everytime you make a video it s always a great day man 😁✌🏻

This is one of the greatest short solos out there
This song is in my cruising queue.

Great lesson!! I got all the discography of the A
P. since 35 years, and I love so much all their solos. Tjey are beautiful!!!
Love how you break things down. Even if they are tricky, you give me and I'm sure others the push or desire to attempt. Thanks, man. Appreciate ya

I'm with you on "Magic". One of the most timeless pop tunes ever. Happy as hell, too.

You make the best guitar tutorials/lessons I've ever seen! Hands down your vids are the absolute best!
Great! I love Parsons and I love your lessons. Thanks Diego. I have a great time breaking down these tunes!
Nicely done! I really like the way you did the intro with no keyboard.
I have said before Ian one of those great underappreciated axe men
I Robot very neat as AP and late Eric Wolfson used many singers when Eric did not sing from Lenny, to the Hoilies Alan White, to Colin Bluestone and one of Ian's coolest guitar solos is on the Alan Parsons Project song Primetime..great lesson Andy

Another Saturday, another great lesson from Andy
Amazing that I just learned about Mickey Thomas singing lead on "Fooled Around" last week.
Wow very nice! That's such a tasty lead! The song is very good but the lead makes the song memorable! Thanks for posting and making it easy to learn.
Really love your tone. Very nice.
One of my favorite Strat solos ! Good work man ! You have a great ear bro !
Fantastic song in my opinion. I figured out the solo a while back, but never learned the rhythm. Thank you.
Dude your stuff is just always so informative and well played. Love when you post new stuff. Always great turns also like this One.
Best tutorials on YT.
always awesome lessons, thanks so much
I agree . The best guitar solos are short and sweet . James Young of Styx is a champion of the short , dynamic and awesome guitar solo :)
Very cool. I've never seen anyone tackle this song before. I used to play 'Some Other Time' and 'Day After Day.' Thanks!
Like how you add a little background info into your lessons . Fav by AP is the outro solo on Turn of a Friendly Card , pt 2. Whomever is playing that has killer tone and is so fluent .
Second position minor pentatonic, AKA the BB King box. Nice vid, thanks.
Bravo , this solo is vibrant and concisely hot
Thank you so much for this tutorial...one of my favorite songs! A lot of the rhythm reminds me of the Doobie Brothers/China Grove.
Great lesson as always with your calm and professional demeanor.....it's obvious you can play - but to me, you seem like you would be an outstanding teacher face-face....maybe you are? Jeff Marshall plays live with Parsons now and that guy is a monster - humble though
Excellent lesson, thanks
Great song !
I played this in my band a few years ago using a fast doubling chorus effect over the solo then a ultimately switched over to a Keeley 30 ms Double Tracker to nail the effect.

"Fooled around and fell in love", Great song with a great solo by Elvin! Maybe a future lesson? Anyway interestingly David Paton who was the lead singer in Pilot and wrote "It's Magic" is on bass on this track, so it's like Pilot meets Alan Parsons Project!
I didn't know that he played bass on this. Great post!
Super tutorial🎉
This is a great tune and it is very similar to the Atlantic Rythmn Sections....I'm So In To You same era of course...
Yeah, they are very similar. I like both of them!
Good connection
Sounds like a Doobie Wah also.
Great playing man!
I Robot is one of the greatest albums so advanced.I dont think the world has caught up yet
