- Hurricane Milton raced toward Florida's Gulf Coast, where landfall was expected Wednesday evening. Storm surge of 13 feet or more was expected, with more than a foot or more of rain. An outbreak of tornadoes was reported across the state. NBC News' Lester Holt spoke with officials and residents on the Gulf Coast.
Sarasota braced for a direct hit from Hurricane Milton, with the threat of storm surge potentially causing catastrophic damage to homes and other buildings. NBC News' Tom Llamas reports.
Ft. Myers could experience a major storm surge as Hurricane Milton hits, and thousands of people have evacuated to shelters. NBC News' Sam Brock reports that the area has already seen dangerous conditions.
The threat to Orlando and other inland cities was from torrential rain and potentially deadly flooding from Hurricane Milton. NBC News' Priscilla Thompson reports.

@gaming5615 I'm not trying to make excuses. I just know how hard it is mentally and physically to evacuate once. To have to do it twice in such a short time span us very demoralizing.

I'm sort of surprised so many people did evacuate. I'm 60 and been here my whole life. I know people who never evacuated, but they did evacuate this one.
It sucks because a lot of people aren't financially, physically or materialisticly able. I don't know if "materialisticly" is a word, but you get it.

@@AFloridaSon As a native Floridian at 53 years old, I agree. For us, it's actually unusual to see and hear about such a high number of people evacuating. We generally just grab some beer and candles and ride them out.
@hard-truthsbetter-than-swe6543 It's not always about a lack of planning, though. Remember, they just did this 2 weeks ago. Finances and supplies haven't had time to recover yet. Then there are those who physically can't evacuate. However, there are those who think they know better and will try to ride it out. Those people will occupy emergency resources that should be used elsewhere.

If Florida hadnt built on barrier islands and protected its reefs, mangroves and wetlands and destroyed Florida this storm wouldn't be as bad. Non permeable surface makes flooding so much worse. All for a cheap beach view.
