People are still living in FEMA's toxic trailers

  • Ten years ago Hurricanes Katrina and Rita tore into the Gulf Coast and displaced over a million residents. For many of these people, trailers provided by the Federal Emergency Management Agency became their homes.
But many of the new occupants soon found it hard to breathe, suffering flulike symptoms, stinging eyes, and nosebleeds. The culprit was formaldehyde, which emanated from the hastily assembled, substandard materials used to make the trailers. The toxic FEMA trailers became an embarrassment to the agency and, in the eyes of many, emblematic of the government’s mismanaged response to the disaster.
A decade after the storms Distillations followed CHF researcher and medical anthropologist Nicholas Shapiro as he went searching for the remaining FEMA trailers. His search took him to the oil fields of North Dakota, where a different kind of housing crisis is taking place.

The EVIL companies said in a way; "Let's sell it to those beakers in Central America" So they did, ONLY to later find out that the imported bananas had high doses of this very same pesticide....DUH! everything we do has consequences.

It really shouldn't baffle you. The government likes to pretend they care about people, but they really don't. If they sincerely cared, we would have a functioning public healthcare system, strict environmental protection laws, frequent inspections on industrial manufacturing/power plants, and most of all, a government that does things for the good of the common people, not so the rich can line their own pockets at everyone else's expense. The US government cares about how quickly they can make money, and will work towards that goal at all costs.

I almost died in a 2021 Winnebago Travato GL van due to the toxic materials used in it. The dealer sold it to me knowing that I am particularly chemically reactive. I have been trying to air it out but there has been no change. I called the EPA and they told me that there is a warning on their site warning people of the toxicity of RVs which are not monitored and unregulated. I called Winnebago and they told me that there is a waver and a warning about the dangerous chemicals inf their RVs in the owner's manual but one cannot see an owners manual unless they purchase one! No attorney will help me either. The DMV told me not to register it or pay the sales tax and to send it right back to the dealer that that said too bad lady!

People wondering why anyone would buy these to live in knowing that they’re former fema trailers. Honestly unless you’ve been homeless, you wouldn’t understand that anything beats sleeping outside exposed to everything. The thought of having a safe place to sleep, even if it’s a trailer, tops everything in that time of your life

Idk about that. I was homeless for 4 years and the best nights I had during those times were spent under the stars in a tent. I guess it depends on the weather and the way you look at things. But if I didnt have kids now and a wonderful home, I would gladly take a van down by the river over those poisonous government trailers.

Have you considered how we can help some of these folks, I understand raising awareness is crucial, but as in life, usually there is a next step, have we figured that out yet? The obvious choice is a lawsuit, but if folks are living in that condition, then they may not have access to the funds or resources to retain a team of lawyers to assist them with this. So nothing may ever get done at that point, while they wait and continue to be exposed to harmful chemicals that can cause not just short term, but long term issues. I'd be happy to help with this cause however I can, but was just curious where we go from here? @Grist

The trailors have some value to those who cant afford better, and certainly helped with the immediate need for shelter after the huricane that displaced millions of people. Shelters are neither free cheap or quick to build.
Buildup of toxic levels of formaldehyde can be mitigated with plants, venting air, and activated carbon air filtration that works very well in a small space like these trailors.
Excessive amounts of formaldehyde is not a problem in just FEMA trailors. Excessive amounts can be found in cigaret smoke, pratically all newly painted surfaces, new cabinetry, carpets, new furneture, and almost everything newly made .
Your initial comment alludes to the real problem. That many people are unaware of that longterm exposure to excessive amounts of formaldehyde can cause health problems. They are unaware of where it might come from, and unaware of how to mitigate it.
Certainly formeldehide is a problem, but it is a byproduct of a lot of manufacturing, and is not going away anytime soon. This makes education on it and how to mitigate it more important than to slam the government for providing these shelters, or for selling them when they were done with them. What is and was needed reguarding the tailors is education on formeldahide, what has lots of formeldahide, and how to mitigate it in your living enviroment.

My mom lived in housing that was sold to senior housing. Orginally an apartment building that had asbestos and formaldehyde. In the 80's still the same in 2022. They repair minor things, but no one wants to take it down. Plus there's still a waiting list to move in.

FEMA is still selling them all over the gulf coast daily. There is a lot not far from where I live now that is a fema staging area and it’s full of these trailers that are leftover from the ones they took back from people after Katrina. The crazy thing is if you can prove you lived in one of these trailers after Katrina, fema will sell you one for $500-$1000. I would rather be homeless than live in one of these things ever again.

Formaldehyde has never been banned from the manufacture of mobile homes. But the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), which has jurisdiction over mobile home construction, began setting standards for the levels of formaldehyde used in their construction back in 1985. The current maximum level allowed in plywood is 0.2 ppm (parts per million), and for particleboard it’s 0.3 ppm. The EPA also recently set lower standards for all plywood and particleboard products that overrides the HUD standards. That said, there is no known HUD standard for the maximum allowed level of formaldehyde gas in the air in a new home. Because so many products, including cabinets and new furniture, combine with the construction materials to off-gas formaldehyde during the first few months after a home is constructed.

    Me and
    My
Fiancé starting out a year ago we lived in a camper trailer for a year. We got very sick, I was so sick that I ended up not being able to work because I never felt okay, I was always coughing always had headaches always was tired. our bunny died as soon as we moved he had a upper respiratory infection. We had mold on the windows, frost on the windows, water leaking from the ceiling with mold mixed, frost on the walls also, the windows would freeze shut in the winter so you couldn’t open the windows to save your life. I’m 110% sure we were exposed to atleast 30 parts per billion and 40 parts per billion. Our camper was also year 2005. Well known camper brand.

I know there are thousands of comments on this video, and you probably won’t see this. But thank you so much for your work. It’s very clear that you individually had to go about tracking all of these people down. Almost none of them knew anything about this. You are truly a good person. This serve do nothing other than knowing that these people now have the information and know how to be safe. Thank you so much for your work. I just subscribed, and will be watching a whole bunch of your videos today!! Keep doing what you’re doing and know that you are most likely inspiring others to be the best version of themselves that they can be❤️

Well said, Curly J To me it's nice to know that there are young people today that show interest in the "well being" of others. And Mr. Nicholas Shapiro is like the "Erin Brockovich" of FEMA Trailers = BADASS

Yet sadly, in spite of knowing the truth, there will be those whom are unable to do anything about it. Be it the continued financial crisis or a lack of alternative resources, there will be those who cannot do anything but stay exactly where they are.
The love of money is the root of all evil, and the evil of what these companies have done is beyond comprehension. However, and sadly so, this is not the only example of the "love of money" having serious consequences for those without. Again and again, "the people" pay the price for the greed of others... and it will only continue, as there seem to be little to no consequence for the wicked actions and/or agendas of the so called ruling elites.
This entire realm is under the control of the fallen, including the individual governments, agencies, commissions, conglomerates, associations and networks, all working together to bring about their "new world order", as spoken of by the heads of the aforementioned... yet so many still refuse to see. We must open our eyes and our minds to the harshest of realities, we are viewed as nothing more than chattel, useless eaters and breeders, and those who see themselves as our overlords will never have our interests at heart, never mind our "best" interests.
All that we see happening in this world today, the issues amongst nations, the issues surrounding borders, the issues surrounding gender identity and sex, the seemingly attempted grooming of young children, the lawlessness, the marked "coldness of heart"- whilst simultaneously claiming "love", "tolerance" and "inclusion" for all, the political extremities, the current and coming famines, the mass deaths of marine life, the earthquakes in diverse places, the pestilence, the diseases, the increased knowledge in virtually all areas and the breakthroughs in genetic engineering, all of this was written of in the ancient texts we now possess... the accuracy of which is stunning indeed.! We were forewarned of these days many, many centuries ago, an act of loving mercy that we may prepare ourselves, not only past days and what has already come to pass, but also for what is yet to come. Lord have mercy. We were warned not to trust those in positions of power within this realm, that such powers were wicked and their deeds nefarious. We were warned not to have deelings with those dark powers, that we not face the same judgements that will befall them.
The last time this realm was judged on account of the evil and wickedness within, it was with water in the form of the great flood. Noah warned the people about what was to come, and he was mocked and scorned for his efforts... right up until the rains began to fall. The next time, the time to come, it shall be with fire... and those whom are now mocking and scorning those who are trying to warn them, they will not be mocking and scorning when the first flames appear.
If you do not know Jesus of Nazareth, Yeshua Hamashiach, the only begotten son of our heavenly Father, now is the time to pray to him that he makes himself known to you... for he is the ONLY means by which we can be saved. Sadly, the churches were infiltrated years ago and the overwhelming majority of them preach false gospels and a false Jesus. Our Lord Jesus accosted the "religious" of his day, drawing attention to their hypocrisies and their cold hearts. He took umbrage with the rich folks who had no love for those with nothing, or next to nothing, and taught that we ALL ought to care for the homeless, the fatherless, the widows and orphans, the infirmed and the deficient, that this was what love truly is. He spent his time with what society deems as the "undesirables", stating that he came for the lost sheep.
Jesus loves you, more than you could possibly comprehend, with his love being the motive for the tortuous death endured... laying down his very life on that cross after already enduring the mockery, the scorn, the vitriol spewed, the anger, the double crossing by one of his own and the vicious flogging at the hands of the Romans... all of it, he chose to lay down his life as such, that our own penalties would no longer be necessary. Yet this was not the end, for three days later he rose, witnessed by more than 500 people and attested to in literature. There is evidence the world over for Jesus of Nazareth, including in the form of the official Roman documents... yet the mainstream and the deniers would have you believe otherwise.
Knock and the door shall be opened unto you, seek and ye shall find. Ask Jesus to make himself known to you, read the words he spoke and the messages within his teachings. For as of right now, it is not too late... but this cannot be said forever. We are now living within the "end of days", and even now the beast system rises(see the book of revelation for confirmation about these days and the beast system-spoken of by the rulers and the elites as the "new world order", and/or the "one world order").

I'd love to see a follow-up video. 5 years later, what happened to these people? What happened to the trailers? Did they get out? Are they still there? Has their health has changed in any significant way, good or bad?

  • @itsmehere1

I cannot believe that someone would rent one of those trailers out, it's not enough to be living in a health risk but now you have the financial burden of needing to pay rent for the damn thing.

Here's the part that confuses me though. Why was it only the gov ones that were toxic? Did the manufacturer not use the toxic chemical in its previous or subsequent models?

My Grandmother lived in a Trailer home most of her adult life.. She was 62 when she died of a rare form of Cancer.. This was in 1977. Come to find out, it was the formaldehyde that caused it. She complained for years of stomach aches and a funny taste in her mouth.. It ate her alive.. Ate out her sinuses.. She was totally pickled with cancer when she died.. Trailers are the worst things to live in for long term. I pray everyone had a way out of the Fema Trailers.

After last big Hurricane here in North-West (Pensacola) Florida, FEMA deemed our rented Mobile Home was still livable by FEMA, just by info over the phone, we would have had one of those Camper-Trailers, but upon hearing videos like this, I'm glad we didn't qualify for one.
