  • This is some Betacam b-roll footage taken in China and recorded on the professional Betacam format.
Betacam was the professional brother of Betamax. Using the same tapes as standard Betamax, Betacam was able to record very high quality component (Y/Pb/Pr) video. It was very popular for on-location Electronic News Gathering (ENG) and for general television production that required portability. It was succeeded by Betacam SP.
There is little known about this footage. It may have been shot by NHK in the late 90's (based on the "Un-Break My Heart" cover that plays in the clothes shop).
It appears to have been shot at & around the Forbidden City in Beijing, China. Here we get to see a rare look at such attractions as Beihai Park and Tiananmen Square, along with shopping and general crowds of people in unusually high quality for the period.
If this footage was used in any programs, let me know!
    xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
This was played back using a Sony MSW-M2100 Betacam player.
This is a REELY EXCLUSIVE upload! This footage is from the only known master recording.

This footage is from at least October 1996 onwards. The song played in the shopping mall is Toni Braxton - Unbreak My Heart which was released October 7th, 1996.

3:04 - There was also another song in the background written in the key D-Flat Major that briefly tonicizes B-flat minor in the Chorus.

You sir.... get it, you really do get it. You do the best transfers I've seen, Netflix and Disney documentaries need to just hire your services. It really is like going back in time and seeing this footage as if it's being recorded this very instant, you don't see any tape misalignment or wire interference, it's like a live feed.

Thanks for the kind words! Can I start with redoing some of the rough AI-upscaled music videos that have been pushed by the major music labels to RUclips in recent years?

Thank you so much, this footage brings fourth many good memories, I bused to live in China in the mid 90's, from 93 to 98 to be exact, my old man was a military attache for the brazilian embassy, the Forbidden City and the Tiān'ānmén square were my playground around these years! Love this place so much that up to this day I call Beijing my secondo home.

It's awesome. Despite it being "low resolution", the video feels so real. I can imagine being there. (Hooray 60fps!) 1:52 was like looking through a window

I love you so much for this footage, what a fascinating time capsule. I am sure you get what I mean but footage like this does something to my brain it's just so freaking cool to see the past in this high quality and to know this footage was saved. I think of all the people rushing by going about their lives not knowing someone 30 years later would be watching footage of them and just what they were doing on that day and stuff. It's really cool also to see the shopping experience and so weird to see the lack of phones everywhere! I love the amount of people with film cameras out and about pretty cool.

I have never worked with Betacam, so I don't know what to expect... Have you sharpened it? Looks a bit posterized. I think another upload of yours, "Early 1990's Osaka Japan B-Roll Footage", looks better. Comparing again, both the Osaka and the Beijing videos have horizontal halos, not vertical, which are more prevalent in color-under video. The halos are noticeable when the object below is brighter than the object above, like you can see it over the roofs of white cars, or over the shoulders of people in bright shirts. Same for the Osaka video, although it seems less pronounced. Is this a known defect of the first-gen Betacam? EDIT: Maybe the Osaka video looks better because it has fewer small objects and more shallow DOF shots.

6:35 - Tiananmen Square. In June 1989, this was the site of a violent crackdown against pro-democracy student demonstrators. By the time this video was filmed, memories of that massacre were already gone.
Since the advent of social media, many users have ended up in prison simply for openly addressing the Tiananmen crackdown.
