As someone who is dyslexic and ADHD hearing someone say “audiobooks don’t count as reading” makes my blood boil. As a child I had school libraries refuse to let me check out certain books that were “above my reading level” I finally got mad and demanded to be allowed to check out “Nancy Drew the secret of shadow ranch” and the librarian told me no. I put my foot down and said that my mom was reading them to me and she laughed in my face and told me that that does not count as reading and I can’t read good. I was 10 years old and I started to cry and the whole class laughed at me. Fast forward to middle school and I got pulled into the principals office and was accused of cheating on book reading tests. (We could take a test about a book we read to earn points to get stuff from the school store) I told them I didn’t cheat because my mom bought me audio books on cassette tape, CD or would read them to me. And the teachers tried to say that didn’t count. My whole family had to fight that one to allow me the right to read books. i’m now 32. I still struggle to read and spell, but I still love to read and yes, I listen with Audible now. Anyone who says they don’t count need to realize how privileged they are to be able to read at all and stop basing people who struggle or just enjoy audiobooks. It’s not right.

I couldn't agree more. In my 'real job' I work with elderly adults. Because of their age, for many of them, their sight isn't what it used to be and they rely heavily on things like audiobooks or cassettes to bring them the small joy of reading. To tell someone who relies on audiobooks that they don't count or they are somehow 'less than' because they don't do things the traditional way is ludicrous, and you're right, privileged. Would you tell Richard Whitehead (a world record holding athlete) he isn't really running because he's using prosthetic legs? No you wouldn't, because that's idiotic. The same principle applies here, just because it's not how you do it, it doesn't mean the action has any less merit. I think people often forget that.

Can I ask what your school district was smoking? How else are young kids supposed to learn how to read? They aren't born with that ability and have to learn through their parents, so reading with your kids is vital. Especially when their learning curve is different from others. Let me tell you something, I'm only a year younger than you and I've used audio books for over twenty years, I don't care what anyone says, I count them on my reading lists. I don't always have the time or energy to pick up a book and read, so audio books are an easy alternative for me. You aren't alone, so keep calm and read on.

    Great video!
I like your points about audiobooks. Though I would argue that we don’t « read » an audiobook book in the literal sense of the term (we listen to audiobooks, thus we don’t engage the same skills, which is especially true when we consume in a language that is not our mother tongue), I totally agree with the fact that listening to an audiobook or reading a book both count as consuming a story and thus should count as a book « read » in the sense that the story has been given to us and that we enjoyed - or not - the world presented.

as someone with adhd & is a full-time student, audio books are major in helping me remain consistent with my reading! I enjoy reading so much, and without audio books, I would be able to read far less. also--reading shouldn't be defined by "reading goals" and the like, it should be defined by the act of engaging with a text (in whichever way you'd like) and getting something from it, whether *it* is enjoyment or learning.

@@teddy3809 yes I hate how competitive reading has become. It seems like if you aren’t reading 150+ books a year you’re somehow doing it wrong. When really it should be about enjoying the process and actually absorbing the content

"audiobooks don't count as reading!!" So would you tell someone whos blind that they dont read?? Or someone whos dyslexic?? Its so stupid and not everyone has the time to read!!! Audiobooks are so useful for everyone and they definitely count as reading!!

I don't know who's idea was to bring special editions with bonus chapters. it's actually ridiculous. I try to finish iron flame and heard about special chapters on fourth wing but make me feel like not interested in knowing what is happening in that bonus chapters rather than buying another book that is basically the same just for few pages

Felt exactly the same way about fourth wing/iron flame. If its not important enough to put in the “main” edition then I can’t be bothered to go back and read it

just found your channel and i really like your content, as someone who wants to get into booktube, it's good to see someone with such down to earth approach. your "'spell bounding' great, but what the f**k is this about?" made me spill my tea 🤭

haha thank you so much, honestly sometimes I feel a bit silly ranting in front of a camera to myself but it's nice to know there's someone out there who appreciates my ramblings!
