- Let's discuss the not so quiet queerness of Good Omens Season 2, a follow up 3 years in the making. I'm honestly such a huge fan of the show and I'm so glad to have seen the second season twice now. Light spoilers ahead but nothing too bad.

I think plot-wise, season 1 was better, but character-wise, season 2 was better. Which I think is what they were going for tbh
Yes! This!
Season two is smaller budget and more intimate. It's more about the character development than wider plot. That's why I like it more. The apocalypse storyline is less funny and whimsical this go round, but more personal and heartbreaking in how it affects the characters.
I love Good Omens, this season was so good. and I love how all the Representation was so genuine, like non of it felt like it was there to be Brownie points but just that these characters just so happen to be queer and that's normal.
Exactly that!
YES!! I love how the rep didn’t feel shoehorned in! It’s very natural
People on tumblr are getting pissy because they feel like some of the good omens fans are just wanting the strike to end so the show can finish. Like???? Thats the point of the show coming out??? To get people on the side of the writers and actors and to help get this shit finally taken care of??? So they can also light a fire under the corpo asses.
Why are people so mad that more people are starting to care? Stop antagonizing people that are on your side. We need to appreciate that more positive support is coming in masses.
Every time prime updates tiktok on good omens content, I am asupirsed to see people going in their comments saying "pay your workers living wages" over and over and over again. That is a great way to help cause change.
Honestly the amount of time that the strike has gone on and how strong they are still going is mighty inspiring. It will heavily inspire others to help cause change as well, and to help keep it going.
WGAstrong!!!! ❤
💯💯💯 like look I love this show a lot but I want people to be paid for their time that should not be a controversial opinion.
@@NarcissaDeville Hear hear!!!!!
OMG, you should absolutely re-read the book. I did it after Season 1 made me realize that Aziraphale and Crowley's last scene together was ALREADY a reference to an old love song. And gosh, there are a LOT of subtle references in there.
For instance, every single artist linked to the pair (Wilde, Da Vinci, and Freddy Mercury) is famously gay or bisexual, even though, say, the other functions of the references would work fine with Austen, Picasso, and Mick Jagger.
At another point, Anathema hears Crowley call Aziraphale "Angel" and immediately concludes that she'd been safe in the car the whole time. Combined with the fact that she heard them old-married-couple-bicker all the way to Tadfield and later thinks of them as "the two consenting bicycle repairmen"...she's clearly assuming they're a couple!
ALSO there's a lot of parallels to Shadwell and Madame Tracy. Shadwell "works" for an organization he thinks is good, which would consider an occultist sex worker clearly the enemy...but he likes her. And Madame Tracy (more baffling in her case) likes HIM and keeps the communication going with food and helpful gestures. And they never kiss or say "I love you" but are clearly implied to be moving in together at the end. So when Neil said that one of the main things he and Pratchett had discussed for a sequel was having Aziraphale and Crowley retire to a cottage in the South Downs together - that would perfectly complete the parallel!
On a related note, angels (and presumably demons?) in the book are "sexless unless they really make an effort". Which doesn't rule out that they COULD make an effort, of course. So I liked the moment where the Madam says Crowley is "A nice boy", and his response is: "I'm not. Either. But thanks!"
Oh I wanna read them retiring in a cottage sobs but yes you make an excellent point and I will be rereading it. We love a NB icon and I hope ms sandwich i believe she’s called comes back she was so much fun.
Didn't Sherlock Holmes retire to the Sussex Downs in the ACD books? A possible reference?
Yeah I could see them wanting to “make an effort” definitely lol. I headcanon them as demisexual
Nina gave me soft butch vibes. But maybe I was just seeing what I wanted to see? Went back and looked at her outfits. I was seeing what I wanted rather than what was. 😆
We all wanted to see that so I feel you.
Your mother watching the second season first is doing something to my brain.
Lol she got the gist of it. I think she had seen bits or pieces of season 1.
I mean, Neil Gaiman is a member of the union, so, although I'm sure he feels solidarity, he's striking as a member of the union.
I hope to hear news about season 3 soon.
Fingers crossed. I know Neil said he'd make a book if Amazon doesn't pick it up. They'd be stupid not to but ...
@@NarcissaDevilleOh yeah, they’d be absolute idiots not to, the success of Good Omens 2 and anticipation for season 3 is huge!
I appreciate everything you have to say in your strike tangent. I’m a music teacher. I’ve found a way to work in the arts in a job that I really love and feel strongly about and still get paid. I also work as a musician in a situation where I’m working with actors and writers and designers and dancers and artists of all types. I work several levels down from streaming so there is so little compensation… so little valuation. I absolutely retreat into stories… books, film, t.v., and music and poetry. It’s how I deal with sometimes overwhelming anxiety. I absolutely stand with the writers and actors. Hell, I have friends on the picket line. Thank you for taking the time to address it.
She's got a point, she's an icon, she's a legend and she is the moment ;)
The narration sections in season 1 kept taking me out of the story, so I think that helped me get into season 2 more deeply.
Honestly valid.
I think whether you will like season 2 depends on what made you really enjoy season 1. I personally mostly just cared for Crowley and Aziraphale`s relationship in season 1, and the rest of the plot was, to put it blantly, background noise. Crowley and Azi were the heart of the series for me, and so its no surprise that i adored season 2 and have rewatched it a billion times by now. Season 2 really feels like Gaiman just feeding the queers all they have been hungering for for years, and I know that for a lot of people it came off as very fanfiction-ish (which i think was deliberate btw and is supposed to tie with the Jane Austin theme and the misconceptions Crowley and Azi have about romantic love) but its EXACTLY what I wanted more of - David Tennant´s Crowley and Michael Sheen`s Aziraphale expressing "I love you" through their actions over and over and over again.
I find it strange that a lot of people seem to think the second season is plot-less, when there very cleary IS a plot, its just very character-focused and more subtle than the bombastic armageddon story-line in season 1. From watching people on yt react to season 2, I ve noticed that a lot of watchers tend to just not pay that much attention to dialoge (A telling example is how people tend to treat the Job episode as a filler and as skippable, even though its the best episode of the entire series in my opinion) and they keep waiting for "actual plot" to happen. Meanwhile, the story-line is unfolding through the conversations, and the ideas explored go way beyond the main "gabriel is missing" plot. We really explore Aziraphale and Crowley`s relationship, what makes them work so well together and what are things that they still need to fix in their relationship. We see how influenced by humanity these celestial beings have become, but how there is still much they just dont get (especially surrounding the idea of romantic love). We see the push and pull of their relationship - how both love each other more than anything, but while crowley thinks what he wants most is to give up everything to be with his angel, Aziraphale refuses to put his own selfish desires (aka. being with crowley forever) in front of what he thinks is best for humanity. It`s all super fascinating, i think, and I cant wait for Gaiman to continue exploring these ideas in season 3.
So I plan to start reviewing the show episode by episode soon and I'm so excited because I agree season 1 was all about Aziraphale and Crowley for me so naturally season 2 is amazing and like I would argue not plotless but I'll get there 😂
I like this season a bit more as well. I was a fan before, and now I'm a super fan. I legit laughed out loud and then cried. Not just any show can do that to me. And yeah, F Bob Iger and the studios. As if they don't have enough damn money. As a child, I always wanted to be in and work in the arts, but was discouraged about the barrier to entry and lack of being able to make a living. Art is necessary. Unexpressed creativity is not benign. Life would lack beauty and soul without the arts.
I think bringing in a co-writer for season 2 really helped and bringing in John Finnemore specifically was a masterstroke. He's easily one of the best broadcast comedy writers working today.
I ran into an interesting complaint online. The complaint was that Crowley and Aziraphale’s flaws were smoothed over too much in Season Two, and that this is something that happens in writing for queer characters, supposedly to make them more appealing. Would love to hear your opinions on this.
That probably could be a video all on its own but I would argue with the fact they still don't communicate properly and for that matter still bicker like an old married couple and Crowley is as surly as ever I have to wonder what show the people making such complaints were watching. Also like even if that we're true that would be in keeping with the book because crowley and Aziraphale in the book are more past the incessant need to be angel and demon and no in between.
I think the S2 is better partly because they bought John Finnemore in to co write. He wrote some of the funniest parts as well, like the WW2 bits. He is a brilliant comedy writer, it was genius to bring him on board.
I prefer it because it is funnier and warmer, as much as I do love the book and the first series.
I laughed when when I saw the title of this video lol
Crowley ❤
If I had to choose the 1 thing that I did not like about the season would be: Crowley living in his car. It just irks me that he has to travel with so few plants and a couple of boxes of the smaller ones that HAD SPOTS (the humanity!). He probably has enough cash to find a flat before Heck kicks him out and not just banks, maybe hidden on some plots of land. The man has been on earth since the begining of time and consistently coded as well off by any standard. It is unreasonable that he hasn't found any accomodation and just living in his car for the better part of a year or longer just so that the audience can think "Oh, he can move in with Az" When if Armgagedon't happened 4 years ago, then it means the angel did not bother seeing his friend being homeless for SO LONG and not bother to let him a room during a global pandemic (I know they can't get sick but they probably stayed indoors). He let JIM of all people crash in his house while Crowley is living in his car. WTF?
So they did like a mini lockdown video in 2020 in which Crowley was still in his apartment and wanted to spend it with Aziraphale but of course that would be against the rules. It is odd that he would live out of his car and not stay with Aziraphale maybe he didn't want to put him out? It would have been cute for them to all but live together. Bit of a missed opportunity.
Aziraphale didn't know Crowley was living in his car.
@@zoeylace4778 yep, Neil confirmed this a few days ago. Crowley never told Aziraphale that he was living in his car, probably bc he didn't want Azi to feel obligated to invite him to move in, and/or he didn't want Azi to worry about him.
@katebenson1256 yep that's why I said it
Aziraphale never knew! Crowley didn’t want him to worry. That was confirmed by Neil when people who were confused on “why would Azi not let him stay” were asking him on Tumblr
I can't say I was much impressed by GO2. When GO1 ended it was so pregnant with possibilities that I was disappointed that none of the earthlies were included. I know there are supposed to be 3 series, so I guess S3 will be the "all of us v. all of them." The mad jumble of casting was confusing. No Hastor. And the tale was told inside out. The threat wasn't explained until it had already been resolved. MMV
I think it’s because it was never about the “threat” the entire season was building up to the ending of the season, building up Crowleys and Aziraphales relationship so that those last few minutes have an impact, and sets up for season three. The threat was a way to move the story along, but not the main point, the real threat, the second coming, is next season and also the resolution of Crowleys and Azi’s relationship.
If nothing else, the series should be honoring its' own thru thread. At the end of GO1 we had 2 Rogue celestials, a well meaning tween antichrist, 4 redundant plagues, a witch, a wanker, a floozy and a fraud who'd all made good, and an ineffible absentee landlord. Up and Down were still spoiling for a fight, which might twist into "all of them against all of us." Instead, we get a lost puppy, some enjoyably whimsical flashbacks, transcendental bureauincompetence, an abridged "Love Actually" rehash, and the predictable Act II downbeat. A 6 episode side quest.
@@kevenpinder7025 but that’s the point of the season, I don’t see anything wrong with that as it serves and builds the story the way intended and how it should. Of everything was high stakes all of the time, the whole Us against them wouldn’t have as much meaning or impact. You need slow bits to make the fast ones exciting.
Neil said Hastor wasn't there because he had nothing to do in the story, he just wasn't relevant. And he has said many times that S2 is to prepare the way fir S3. I have no idea how a single thing was confusing it was very simple.
