Great video! I have so many thoughts on "the last 15 min", but what touched me the most by far was Crowley's confession. NOT ONLY did he fully turn around, look up and mutter "Oh God" before telling Aziraphale how he felt (which, I can't even, that's a whole other level coming from him). NOT ONLY did he come to the realization and almost said "... and I would like to spend the rest of my existence with you." He found the strength to break that silence between them on what was actually happening and just put it all out there, despite having just been rejected so painfully. It was so, so brave of him, I almost can't put into words how beautiful it was. He knew it might not change anything, but he was willing to take that risk, he said it because it needed to be said. I deeply admire how he led with his heart and was able to do something most of us could not.
So much this. The courage it took to show even *more* vulnerability in the face of the trainwreck he was in the middle of just kills me. And makes me love Crowley so much more.
One thing we might consider is that on an emotional level Crowley and Aziraphale are sort of teenagers. They both have some advanced knowledge and wisdom. But their romance is extremely innocent like high school sweethearts. Also the feelings of most of the other angels/demons seem more basic. While the two of them are dealing with a flood of complex mixed emotions constantly. And their trouble identifying and talking about their feelings seems like teens also.
I felt like Aziraphale looking at Crowley in that moment with the Metatron was him looking more for reassurance than anything else, like "is this ok?" He trusts Crowley implicitly, and knows if somethings goes wrong Crowley will come in to help him, like he always does And I think Crowley assumed that whatever the Metatron has to say or do, Aziraphale will not take any of his shit. (He certainly expected it as shown by their "conversation" after...) And again, if anything goes wrong he can just pop in and save the day, like he always does. So, he lets him go. And he was right! ... to an extent. (He also JUST broke into heaven, accessed their files, stared the archangels in the face without fear, he did all that without any immediate consequence, and he very clearly sees both heaven and hell as incompetent. We don't know how much Crowley knows/remembers about heaven and how it works so ??? He has to know/assume (or doesn't) Somethings that make him feel safe enough to let Aziraphale go.) They also stopped armageddon together, fooled heaven and hell together, easily performed a massively powerful miracle together. Despite his deep fears he likely HAD put his guard down a little bit regarding heaven and hell. Just a smidge. Crowley prbably would have never thought the Metatron would offer to make him an angel again as a way to manipulate Aziraphale, though. Is that even possible? I defenitely do agree that its all very VERY suspicious regardless. Hopefully it is all explained next season.
I think that they have known each other from the beginning, and that he is also the one who "answered" Crowley and that is why Metatron sees him with eyes of hatred and revenge because he knows how Crowley was thrown out of heaven and that he would never return, and as Gabriel says "there was no closure for the fall"
I think there are 2 main problems here: Aziraphale has no idea how long Crowley has yearned for him. There are differing opinions, but its definitely way longer than Aziraphale thinks. Second is that Aziraphale actually feels violated because of the degree of force Crowley used. To me this is quite serious. They both owe each other an apology dance.
I mean I would agree Aziraphale doesn't know how long but from what I understand he wanted Crowley to do that again at least according to the director. But either way they both definitely need to work on communication
The South Downs would be a reference to Neil saying on a blog a while back (like 2000s) that he and Terry had been having dinner and wondered where Crowley and Aziraphale are now (book versions) and concluded they were in a cottage in the South Downs (a beautiful area of rural southern England with rolling hills)
Oh I know about that I meant I wasn't sure how the people saw this and knew it was specifically in South downs since it's just a cottage picture. The Nancy Drew's of good omens are next level. 🫡
Isn’t it though?! Never really been in a fandom before - this one feels so open and warm and driven by mutual love of the characters. And the knowledge that the show is stuffed full of Easter eggs definitely fosters the detective mindset - but in a super sweet enthusiastic way, not too much of the creepy, force-my-personal-narrative way.
It was so nice if that cottage-picture was a hint. I want them so badly to live happy together in the end. I really hope it was not a joke similar to people in the series reading Neil Gaiman books 😢.
So here is my take on the situation; Metatron didn’t do anything crazy, just good old fashion manipulation. He acts while things are up in the air and people are confused and vulnerable, thus making g them easier to manipulate as they attempt to figure things out and regulate back to normal. When he talks to Azi the coffee he gives him is a metaphor for gaslighting, he says it has a lot of almost syrup which should make it sweet, Azi tries it and as we know it is actually just a dash of syrup so would be bitter but Azi feels pressured to agree and say it’s nice anyway. The coffee on offer is a stand in for heaven, he is making out that things would be great in heaven with Azi there when we all know it would be awful. And to add pressure to the gaslighting the book of life is a very real threat, the Metatron could easily erase them from the book of life if not happy with this outcome, if Azi is there he can stop that danger. give me coffee or give me death, people never choose death and Azi was having to make this choice too, heaven or death. On the Crowley front he lets Azi go with the Metatron because he has complete confidence in his angle to make the right decisions. He doesn’t see this moment as a risk at all. He is completely blindsided by Aziraphale’s decision, this wasn’t even a possibility in his mind. them always being together was a given to Crowley, that’s why his speech seems so desperate, because he planned it and practiced it with them being together always was just a matter of fact and they simply needed to recognise it for being romantic. He is then thrown off balance with the threat of losing Azi and becomes desperate. Basically the Metatron gaslight, gate keep, girl bossed his way to the end result
glad u mentioned the metatron side eye and the way crowley had a moment of apathy about the situation. I can imagine why, like its been a long day and he couldnt have very well done anything to stop it anyway, but it does make me a little curious for the lack of any hesitation of concern. will be interesting to see if its addressed in s3. the way the metatron speaks to aziraphale with 'think about it' then straight to 'tell him the good news' came off as manipulative speaking to me. the pacing was fast and i can see it look less like manipulation and more like a weird disjointed choice of words. i only guess thats because of time constraints on the scene to fit so maybe it didnt read like that to all.. i do wish it was a bit longer and we got to see more of their conversation. the 360 camera would've been cool for the kiss but im glad it didnt get used. the nuances are much more valuable. u dont need showy 360s with actors like that (says someone who knows fuck all about film loll 😅)
Love the video, i enjoy hearing your thoughts. I do not ascribe to the coffee theory, i think it takes away too much from the characters for the Metatron to be controlling one or both of them like that. Metatron is super manipulative, as shown by his "take all the time you need... Great lets go!" Attitude. Hes using classic manipulation techniques like a con artist. Pretend the other person has a choice then make them feel time pressure. The reason i think Crowley lets Aziraphale deal with the Metatron by himself is the same reason he leaves Azi to deal with a bookshop full of arch angels and demons while he escorts nina and maggie to safety. They have both been dealing with heaven and hell for 6,000 years, they trust each other. Also Crowley seems to be able to sense when his angel is in trouble, so he probably feels he can step outside and join them quickly if need be. Azi shows no interest in the metatrons deal until Crowley is brought up. I think he sees a chance for them to be together on the same side and jumps at it. He remembers the angel Crowley used to be, and the idea idea of them being together, safe from hell, 'safe' (he thinks) from heaven and in a position to make real changes overrides any thoughts of any trama or bitterness Crowley has for heaven. If you haven't seen it somehow there is an amazing video animatic on RUclips that really expresses this idea well (not my video) ruclips.net/video/0IklocqHfCg/видео.htmlsi=mSWEmJeyD07qUCr-
I do think that's fair to say that certain theories take away agency and all of that and obviously there is a trust between them. There's a certain intimacy that comes from sheer time I think and 6000 years has certainly given them that. And I would also agree that the Metatron as with most of heaven is a master manipulator. Which is like ughhh thanks I hate it.
Metatron’s off hand remark that they will be dealing with the “second coming “ is some pretty convincing foreshadowing that once again Azirafale will indeed need Crowley to help him out of an impossible situation. Crowley knows how naive azirafale is.
@@Annoyingwerewolf someone can be very intelligent and still be naive. Up to the point before Metaron arrives with his proposal, Azirafale always believes in goodness and in that sense is naive because the world doesn’t function like that. But you can see in Azirafale’s face as the elevator rises to heaven, the changes in his face as he ponders what will happen and possibly what he would do about it. B y the way, that was some superb acting by Michael Sheen. The subtle changes in his expressions in that short period of time, speaks volumes. I didn’t see it at all the first time I watched because I was so upset .
It's great to see another take on this scene. Your vid does a great job combining a lot of the concepts I've seen across multiple videos ( as well as what I missed in making my own vid bc it was before I knew the "do it again" post). It's so hard to make a GO vid under 30 min long bc there's so much to piece together, so a proper tip of the hat for including so many tidbits. 💕
I think Crowley telling Aziraphale to go off with Metatron was more that he hadn't been invited, I don't think Metatron would tolerate him coming along at that point. I think there's some kind of history between Metatron and Crowley for sure. Derek Jacobi is a brilliant actor who can tell a story with his eyes. But I do wonder if Aziraphale was trying to communicate his anxiety to Crowley and it's possible that maybe there's more going on and we'll know next series..
I don’t think the look was azi saying don’t let me go… i think it was asking Crowley’s permission. Remember Crowley knows azi better then we do… he didn’t want Azi to feel pulled away from heaven. He wants him to make his own decisions… he trusts aziraphale… a very dumb trust but a trust none the less…
Like so many families/couples/friends, it's not so much that they don't TALK to each other, they don't LISTEN to each other--or even seem aware that they should let the other speak their opinions/desires/feelings. They both seemed to have assumed that the other would immediately fall in line with what they each propose with no discussion.
A twist that is extremely unlikely but it would be worthy of Gaiman: Metatron ends up as a (semi-)good guy who desperately wanted to get Az to heaven to help thwart the Second Coming, which is being pushed by some other angels/demons (possibly working in concert) and that's why he manipulated Az to not go off w/ Crowley and why he looks so relieved once Az is in the elevator.
Could you do a video about their love? Like when do you picture their relationship becoming a romance? I personally find the topic endlessly fascinating.
@@NarcissaDevilleI actually heard that Gaiman himself didn’t (consciously) ship the characters until he saw Tennant and Sheen in the roles, and then it was obvious to him.
What completely blows my mind about Aziraphale’s choice is the fact that he would even think for a second that it would go remotely close the way he thinks it will. He has literally just seen Gabriel get thrown out of heaven and memory wiped for disobeying one (1) order in heaven. I don’t know how Aziraphale can convince himself that he would be able to do anything in heaven without suffering the exact same punishment. It just blows my mind that he is literally faced with the exact thing that happens to people who disobey heaven Gabriel was even the supreme leader and it did absolutely nothing to protect him. The fact that he can rationalize wanting to make a difference and yet also seeing what that exact action did to Gabriel is astounding to me. I guess he doesn’t know exactly what Gabriel did to get thrown out but it’s clear that he did something heaven didn’t like and was thrown out because of it and I just don’t know how Aziraphale can even delude himself into thinking it won’t happen to him too. That’s what’s currently making me go feral over the Final Fifteen. Fantastic video, I loved hearing your thoughts thank you 😂
I think Poor Aziraphale has the gay religious trauma and it's making him make questionable decisions. It's unfortunate. But hopefully he'll figure it out in time.
@@NarcissaDeville ooh that’s a good point, maybe he’s so stuck in the “Heaven can do no wrong” and “brainwashed by the homophobic church” mentality that he can’t even see what’s right in front of him 😳
Thank you for the video. 🙂. I liked your interpretation of Crowleys rejection of being nice (I never tought of it thos way)and why Aziraphale wants him to go to heaven. I thought Crowley was strange before he let Aziraphale walk away with Metatron. He just laid tired (?, with lack of concentration?) on the armchair when the other angels interrogated and threatened his angel.
Hi!! The Metatrón threatened Azi eliminating Crowley from the book of life, because they are partners "the facto" that's why he accepts to go back to heaven and that way save Crowley because he believes that when they are both, in heaven can protect him. And what Azi says silently, after the kiss, is: please, please, I can't And in my opinion that's why Crowley remains silent and thoughtful outside the bookstore waiting and watching Azi as he leaves and goes with "The Metatron" I love your videos :) and thanks a lot for posting them
It occurs to me that while Azirafale says “I forgive you” to Crowley regularly, if he does return to Crowley he might feel the need to ask for forgiveness. Of course, it could be my own need to have him do so as a much wiser Angel than he has been (always wanting to to do God’s will).
I am so, so curious to see in season 3 WHAT exactly Metatron is planning to do with Aziraphale in heaven. I've seen many theories about it, and I've seen a wonderful meta of how he manipulated Aziraphale into accepting the promotion... but does he believe he'll help along with the second coming?? Does he know he probably won't and has a solution ready for that? Was the whole promotion a lie and Aziraphale will be fast in trouble once they reach heaven?
Me too! I often try to figure out Metatron's motives. I mean, Aziraphale just got finished thwarting Armageddon, him wanting Az for archangel is a laugh. One of my theories is that perhaps he thinks everything is Crowley's influence and once he can get the angel away from the demon and back to heaven he will fall in line and be a "good" little angel. Metatron has no idea who he's dealing with, though, so I'm thinking that underestimating Aziraphale will be his biggest mistake.
So I really love your videos and this one is so good and timely. I have unfortunately had a really annoying thought about the Metatron, and let me just firstly say I hate that this is living in my head, but the Metatron was once a human. Enoch he went bodily to heaven very early in the bible and became the voice of God. I don't think he is speaking for God any more, I think he want the war and the end because he is separated from his family on the dead people side of heaven and is stuck with all the angels now, and the only way he feels like he can be with his people again is after the end. Look I hate it I don't want to care about him, but now it is just sitting there in my head now.
Hmm I mean if that's the meta (no pun intended) that we're working with them that does make sense. I still have a hard time not hating him but like I could see that
@@NarcissaDeville I really do still want to hate him, I'm so annoyed this lives in my head now. I think it may be projecting. After my dog died I asked if she thought God would be upset if I wanted to go to Heaven so I can see my Grandma, Mom and hold my dog more than i want to see God. So those feelings may be part of it.
Mm, he is knowledgeable with human stuff, he once told Aziraphale something like he knew and appreciated drinks or something. As long as he does not take a major part (or rather is just backstagematerial) in season 3, I don't care too much about him. That's not very likely, but I can't stand him 💔.
@@NarcissaDevilleI'm not a fan of onscreen sex scenes at this point because I watch a lot of shows with my family. I would love an implication of it though. For example, Crowley tells Aziraphale he's thought of something new they could try after dinner, and Aziraphale blushes furiously.
@@catfancier270 Yeah 😍. And a proper, deep kiss this time just has to be. Plus one with Crowley slamming Aziraphale again against a wall, but this time Aziraphale leans in.
In the book Crowley once went to the toilet. So I think there has to be something down there (some people say these two don't have sexual organs. I'm sure he has at least). Well, the enjoyable things he will figure out, too (together with Aziraphale).
Why is everyone referring to Metatron as “The Metatron”? Metatron is his name. He’s described in the Bible as the most powerful archangel, the scribe of god, has led the people somewhere. So where does the “the” come from?
The Metatron is not a name, it is a position in heaven, it is "He Who Talks With God" in fact there is a theory, Kabala canon, that there are really two Metatrons each with different responsibilities in heaven, "The Metatron" A kind of CEO in a company today. You can search this on Google.

I think Poor Aziraphale has the gay religious trauma and it's making him make questionable decisions. It's unfortunate. But hopefully he'll figure it out in time.
@@NarcissaDeville ooh that’s a good point, maybe he’s so stuck in the “Heaven can do no wrong” and “brainwashed by the homophobic church” mentality that he can’t even see what’s right in front of him 😳
Oh my gosh I love your laugh. I am subbing.
Well thank you
Thank you for the video.
And what Azi says silently, after the kiss, is: please, please, I can't
And in my opinion that's why Crowley remains silent and thoughtful outside the bookstore waiting and watching Azi as he leaves and goes with "The Metatron"
I love your videos :) and thanks a lot for posting them
Would be funny if Metatron just wants to retire and listen to the Sound of Music with his pal The Almighty.
🤣
It occurs to me that while Azirafale says “I forgive you” to Crowley regularly, if he does return to Crowley he might feel the need to ask for forgiveness. Of course, it could be my own need to have him do so as a much wiser Angel than he has been (always wanting to to do God’s will).
I mean you're not wrong.
I think they can't say 'I love you' because of 6000 years of conditioning to not do so.
I mean I think that's understandable though. Projecting ourselves onto characters is what we do.
Mm, he is knowledgeable with human stuff, he once told Aziraphale something like he knew and appreciated drinks or something. As long as he does not take a major part (or rather is just backstagematerial) in season 3, I don't care too much about him. That's not very likely, but I can't stand him 💔.
If Aziraphale and Crowley ever have sex (if they can?) it will totally blow their minds.
I'm sure they absolutely can. As for whether they would on screen that I'm less sure of. Thank badness for fanfic tbh
@@NarcissaDevilleI'm not a fan of onscreen sex scenes at this point because I watch a lot of shows with my family. I would love an implication of it though. For example, Crowley tells Aziraphale he's thought of something new they could try after dinner, and Aziraphale blushes furiously.

Yeah 😍. And a proper, deep kiss this time just has to be. Plus one with Crowley slamming Aziraphale again against a wall, but this time Aziraphale leans in.
Wall slam ftw
In the book Crowley once went to the toilet. So I think there has to be something down there (some people say these two don't have sexual organs. I'm sure he has at least). Well, the enjoyable things he will figure out, too (together with Aziraphale).
Why is everyone referring to Metatron as “The Metatron”? Metatron is his name. He’s described in the Bible as the most powerful archangel, the scribe of god, has led the people somewhere. So where does the “the” come from?
I'm honestly not sure but everyone seems to add the 'the' to the title so it just slipped in for me
The Metatron is not a name, it is a position in heaven, it is "He Who Talks With God" in fact there is a theory, Kabala canon, that there are really two Metatrons each with different responsibilities in heaven, "The Metatron" A kind of CEO in a company today. You can search this on Google.
I think it's because they use it in the series too
"The breakdown" me: psychological? I can do that 🫠
