Dylan, thank you for this video, you shown me the way how to lay the 40x wire and the start of lead wire on the back of bobbins I used to lay it inside the bobbin, and it took a lot of free space
From Leo: I am glad men like yourself wind pickups, study design, learn what materials and methods work for each particular voice. I am glad to buy them completed. I made a winder and counter, bought the materials, spent the time, and did not like the tones I was getting and just plain decided it was not fun for me. I love building parts guitars and even love whittling some of them out of wood blocks, but I just like to buy the pickups ready to go with the designed in voicing already known.
Does it make me a little off if I didn't consider that boring? I appreciate all the content you put out and that you can talk about all the snake oil and misconceptions as well.
It's a great satisfaction to do something with your hands and for your own. Personally, I started to modify my tube amp since twelve years now and I enjoy every day I'm playing guitar. My goal was not to sound like Eddie Van Halen or George Lynch or someone else, I just wanted to sound like I appreciate it! Maybe someday I'll try to wind my own coils... who knows?
First, I love the videos. I've been learning a lot about materials, "how" and "why". Keep them coming. A couple questions for you, sir. 1. Do you strip the finish off the pup wire before you solder? I've seen several guys who insist it must be done and a few guys who don't bother because the solder melts the finish away. 2. How do you connect your bobbin to the winder? Double sided tape?
Jerry again I do clean tradition gospel music. I am wanting to change pickups in a epiphone Sgt special but I am wanting max clean clarity sounds and tone for large areas to play in without having to turn amps so loud bc they seem to distort when you have turn them up large amounts. Appreciate the work you do and sharing your knowledge of what you do so well thanks
Something I'm wondering is, when you connect both single coils does their resistance double or is there a certain formula to figure out what the end resistance will be? For example, if I wound both coils at 7Kohms each, would it be a 14Kohm humbucker?
On your pickup winder, do you attach the bobbin with just double sided tape? Or could I see a blue clip on there too? Great video’s, as I’m aiming to start winding, just as hobby and fun of trying it. Appreciate the myth busting tips too - with claims you read that this or that “must” be used.
When you magnetize a pickup, does the north side of the magnetizing magnet make the side it touches north too? Or is it opposite? I just got one of the mojotone vices with the north and south magnet in there and I wanna make sure that I don't get it backwards
I have a chinese epiphone les paul jr. it is my only electric and its kinda rough sounding i need to get a good clean tone on it.... any suggestions? I would be into making my own or just buying one i guess but making one would be wayyy cooler 😎 cheers Dylan, really appreciate all your videos :)
Hi Dylan, I hope you can answer this, I checked every article but I couldn't find one. Is it possible to use a thicker gauge copper wire, like awg36? Have you tried it? And how does it sound or will sound theoretically? awg42 and 43 is not available in retail in my country, only found a 36 gauge. Thanks in advance
@@jarrodsilver6854 yes experimented with it, definitely worked. But later I found a 43awg so I abandoned 36awg. I also made some experiment with resin, made a pickup with it. It's on my other channel Gitara Maker.
RUclips has copyright striked a Content Creater for playing a Dsus chord....He wasn't playing a cover song, just that chord. How can someone claim they own a chord Copyright?
I pegged you as a motorcycle guy. You just kinda have the motorcycle guy look. To me theres nothing else to like in the world but motorcycles and guitars and dogs.
It's weird that Dylan doesn't use maple spacers because it makes no difference to the sound and their more expensive but will use clear bobbins over black or white. while the clear is more expensive than black or whites and uses the clear because their 'cool'.. when I open pickups up and see the pickup maker used maple spacers, I know he made an extra effort for those who care to be more vintage correct for whatever reason.
Some think the maple spacer are cool... and not to use it is being a penny pincher or bean counter. then there's the argument of not using braided wire.
@@jackValentine189 And... those people can start their own companies and make their pickups the way they like. Id be stoked to try them. Look... This is not a competition or a contest. I love seeing what others create and I HOPE they like things different to me. Also... I used braided wire just today. LOL penny pinching... you obviously don't know me. I hope you have a great day.

Wow Dylan Timeless Good data. Thanks for laying it down. Getting set to start winding and soaking up all i can. catch you on your stream. Best, Tom G

With poly wire you can just solder it. Plain Enamel you have to scrape it. Yes. Double sided tape
@@DylanTalksTone thanks man.
Again, your videos are great
If I read correctly, the Remington P155 is a poly coat. Do you know if that is correct?
Stephen Mosack yes it is poly.

Thank you for this valuable information video.
Does the traverse movement actually have an influence on the sound?

hey man, the maple spacer is the tone wood, dont kill the mojo man

Do you think seymore dunckan pickups are good my name is jerry
Are you still going to have that pickup winder class??

What is the direction of the turn in winding?

Where did you get the winder?
I had it built.
Do you feel that the loser you wind the coil, the more high end you get?
What is a situation where the insulation type does matter?
When rewinding a vintage pickup to original spec.
Ah gotcha for Period Specific. Thanks!!!
That looked like my Centerpunch....lol
Sure is. Ships in the morning. Making the covers now
I believe that is going in my Charvel...can’t wait!!!

Come to think of it… I used maple spacers AND braided wire today on some custom stuff I was doing.
