  • Only a few races left in the Winston Cup Series and Terry Labonte is closing in on his second Winston Cup. He suffers a hard hit during friday practice and hurts his wrist and hand. The surprise of the race was Bobby Hamilton who picked up his first career win and took the #43 and The King back to victory lane for the first time since 1984.

    Just incredible how Ken Schrader saved that car! Most drivers can't save the car when it's that sideways on a straightaway, but he did it in the middle of a turn!

    I was there that day! My hubby at that time won tickets from work and we went. I wish we knew abou earplugs then,lol, but it was a fun event and we were pretty close down that all the crashes happened right in front of us to our left as they came around a curve. I was snapping pictures a lot with my trusty ole Minolta camera back then. Prior to the race we walked around and I got to meet Jeff Gordon and I got to sit in his #24 car and have my picture taken with him standing right next to the door! I was pretty happy about that. He was so nice. I wish I knew where that picture went to! I use to have it on a bookshelf in my kitchen back then. I should have put in my scrapbook because I just found our ticket stubs today in my scrapbook here as I as reorganizing my supply room. That’s how I could recall the exact day of the race and name and google it to find this! So cool watching now and telling my son that his dad and I were there. We divorced a year after this but remain friendly to this day. We have these great memories. I’m glad I found this video. Thanks for posting this Dave W.
    Peace to everyone. Be kind to everyone. You never know what someone is going through. 😊

    As the 16th year of NASCAR Racing on Philippine Television winds down, Bobby Hamilton, who drove the iconic #43 STP Pontiac Grand Prix for Petty Enterprises that was owned by 7-Time NASCAR Cup Series Champion Richard Petty and finished 9th in points, became the surprise winner of the 1996 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series season when he won the 1996 Dura Lube 500K at the Phoenix International Raceway by defeating Mark Martin of Roush Fenway Racing. The penultimate NASCAR on GMA race of 1996 was jointly produced by Television and Production Exponents, Inc. and SilverStar Communications, Inc. and aired live, nationwide, and via-satellite on GMA Network and Citynet Television 27 on October 28, 1996 with a radio simulcast on DZBB 594 Radyo Bisig Bayan and Campus Radio 97.1 WLS FM

    @LMCMInterloper They also had most of their weekly programming with motorsports themes too. This week I think they did a The Life and Times of Richard Petty show and probably some racers were on the Grand Old Opry, etc....

    Brett Bodine's 3 year deal was "Close Call Phone Cards". They left him after 25 races into 1997.

    @LMCMInterloper From Wiki (yeah I know):
    Beginning in the early-1990s, as a nod to TNN's NASCAR coverage, as well as Opryland's official designation with NASCAR, the annual "TNN Salute to Motorsports" event would take place over a weeklong period. This included numerous motorsports exhibits as well as meet-and-greets with racing personalities.
    It wasn't just a 1996 thing, though as Opryland closd in 1997...

    Some interesting notes: Bill Elliott ran a 1997 preview scheme and Robert Pressley's car had headlight decals (Chevys ran the headlight rings in 1996)

    @LMCMInterloper - The intro before the TNN song is 6th Avenue Heartache by The Wallflowers. Good song! If you're referring to the intro when DW previews the race, it sounds like some sort of production music.

    Do you happen to have the '96 Food City 500 from Bristol or the '96 UAW-GM Teamwork 500 from Pocono? Those are the only races from that season left that are not currently on here.
    Thank you for your 1996 Winston Cup videos! Greatly appreciate it!

      Pocono that June 1996 was a great race - the fight for the lead between Gordon, Cope, Stricklin etc. was huge in the first half there.

    • @NotSteveCook
      @NotSteveCook 4 года назад +2

      Yep. Until 1997, Sonoma and Phoenix (and Riverside before it closed) hosted combination races, counting for points in Winston Cup and Winston West. The lineup was determined by the 40 fastest qualifiers, followed by 2 provisionals from Winston Cup points, and 2 more for Winston West competitors. There was a similar arrangement with the Busch Grand National Series and the Busch North Series.
