    I uploaded a ~35 minute Patron exclusive video of me talking about my experience with Old-School Runescape as a new player, if you're interested in that. If you pay $5, you get access to my bi-weekly unscripted video series where I ramble about a particular topic. You can even suggest a topic in the comments and maybe I'll get to it.
    Thanks y'all, keep it 💯

      I understand where you're coming from.
      I figured it'd be better to have something lower effort that's more of a stream of consciousness be exclusive, compared to the highly edited main channel videos I post publicly. If you want some insight onto my experience playing the game, you can pay a little bit to watch it, all my other videos, then unsubscribe if you want.
      But if you don't want to pay for it, that's fine. You aren't missing any HUGE revelations. It's just something to listen to and hear me in an unscripted format ramble about stuff I think is interesting.

    The reason why there seems to be a bunch of "meaningless" 2nd floors is because many were added during the lifespan of RuneScape Classic in 2001 and 2002 with usable beds. In RSC, you had "fatigue" that would prevent you from gaining exp. You had to sleep in beds in places and type in a CAPTCHA to reset the fatigue as an anti-bot measure. :)

    I’m a very active oldschool RuneScape player, I have hosted several private parties at the Burthorpe Games Room for my clan. We held tournament competitions, the winner of which wins a valuable and symbolic item. Even if that place spends 99.9% of the time empty, I’m still soo glad it exists for the occasional game or party!

    I adore this series. As someone learning 3d modeling it's taught me to really appreciate the effort it takes to make a world believable - even the smallest objects need a lot of care and thought to fit in with a location, with so much of it not even meriting a second of the player's time. Someone had to make, texture and place those objects, from giant machines to a single coffee cup, all to make you feel part of the world. A simple shack could've been the pride and joy of an environmental artist and just by taking a few seconds you can make it all worthwhile. A very inspiring series.

    Update: rewatching the nostalgia part about render distance and how the game was a web browser game and stuff (all stuff I lived through) and maybe I’m biased because I grew up with it? But that’s how I play the game. Lol. I don’t use GPU or rarely even resizable. I play classic layout and am used to it. It doesn’t bug or bother me, and I have fun doing it. Honestly, it took me a while to get over how fundamentally changed RS3 became when it released, and while I don’t play on the classic layout on that game (my setup is wonky af for sure in RS3), I prefer sticking to fixed in OSRS.

  • @Connor_Herman
    @Connor_Herman Год назад +26

    Wow I think you nailed it with respect to render distances. The game was designed such that we'd never see many areas at once. It was deliberately compact because of this. Due to the additional teleports and increased render distances the game feels "smaller" than it did when RS2 came out. I've watched several videos on the impact of this change. It's a little unfortunate with respect to exploration, but necessary in an era where older players are time-poor and don't want to traverse to map to do every activity. We were bewildered by how large the world was when we were younger but we simply don't have the time to explore every nook and cranny today.

    Have to say this if you haven't experienced the first 4 minutes rooms you did not start back before having everything handed too you like ice cream. It's really something players from 2007 and earlier can say you literally just watch guides on how to do this and that. Back in the day starting a game for the first time you normally went in with a blank slate which most people forgot how to do. You honestly did explore ever room even if it was pointless it's not much used today but honestly sometimes people found stuff that was hidden just because of that alone and most players did it out of curiosity anyways

    • @Dawggo
      @Dawggo Год назад

      Like when I started I knew nothing about the game I sat there and read every single word on tutorial island and went to every spot too make sure I didn't miss anything. It took me over a half hour to just do that alone. Like I said times change over the years now all you either do is use a plugin that shows you how to do it which doesn't bother me for experienced players this is a blessing for new people though you should be going in with the mindset on learning things yourself too.

    • @Dawggo
      @Dawggo Год назад

      Or you watch a video guide on how to do that specific task. Like I said though this honestly saves people who played a long time a lot of time instead of them having learn new mechanics constantly it can save them hours of gameplay in minutes that's the good thing but having everything handed to a newer player I feel is cheap :/ that's me though

    • @PretzelYT
      @PretzelYT  Год назад

      I totally know what you mean. It's why people prefer Morrowind quests over Skyrim quests, you're forced to read the dialog and journal entries to figure out where you're supposed to go.
      Interestingly, the base game is kinda like that. But with the community developed Quest Helper plugin (and all the guides online), that fun is taken out of it. The written content and just doing quests for the fun of it isn't really a thing people engage with anymore. They just want to engage with the mechanical systems of the game.
      Though I would say some of that is the fault of how a lot of the quests are designed. There's so much running back and forth, and OSRS is NOT a game that makes that a fun process. So I can't blame people TOO much for wanting to complete quests in the most efficient ways.
      I actually talked a little bit about this in my video on Detective Vision, but when given the opportunity, players will optimize the fun out of a game. Maybe I could make a whole video on "player optimization", there's a ton to talk about around that.

      Someone pointed this out, but I forgot to disable a Runelite plugin that adds the nice blue skybox. I completely forgot the game normally has that spooky black void, I wish I would have remembered so I could bring that up. Could have further nailed home the point that everyone's perspective for the game has changed.

    Honestly I kinda wish tutorial island was a place you could later return to. With the one new players are on in a separate instance from the one you return to so new players are left alone. Maybe there could even be some subtle changes to reflect story progression.

    As technology advances, and games get more complicated, I still thank RuneScape for at a glance staying the same in all the years its been in the running. There are a lot of unused areas in the game, and it's really cool that you are taking the time to explore them in this video. It really let me know as someone who respects the game and has been playing since 2006 that it's okay to slow down every once in a while. Most players (including content creators) probably use RuneLite and the plugins that come with it. It makes the game more convenient, but it doesn't really help with the vibe of the game. It's all about plugins, max gp per hour, and efficiency in skilling/bossing tasks. I don't think we can ever get back that true adventurous feeling from back in the days of RuneScape. But the game was released as "OldSchool" and it's been alive for 10 years! So hey, I know it may suck that it isn't something we can get back, but we can at least recreate those nostalgic memories. So again, I appreciate that you made this video and really made us veteran players feel that sort of lost "adventure" feeling. This game is so important to me, and I think that the Newbie Melody is perfect for remembering it. The song almost feels like a story of your RuneScape life, and death. Give it a listen again with that in mind, and see what I mean. It's pretty cool!

This is one of the FEW games with GENUINE good people(there's still trolls so be cautious and safe). The bonds I've made through that pixilated world... wouldn't trade em for a thing!

      One of the things I used to do as a kid was just explore all of the stray rooms in the game. In terms of how the main cities are placed, they genuinely feel interesting to walk through. Not to insult any other particular games, but there are a lot where the world is open but it feels like any place I go is the same as the last. I think Runescape has a very good, medium sense of scale for most of the map.

      Triple commenting because I'm just thinking about stuff as I watch. The short render distance reminds me a lot of why I liked biking. 'Cause cars are more convenient but it feels like you just pass everything before you can even think about it. On my bicycle I could still get to places in less than half a day but still had the time to look and appreciate all the stuff people were just doing in the world.

      One of the things that really sucked last time I played Runescape was that I desperately wanted to socialize and play minigames, but any content that doesn't give rewards falls out of favor. I had a blast playing Trouble Brewing, but most people playing sat afk after getting their credits for cosmetics. Which is fine of them, but unfortunate for me. It feels like a lot of people play Runescape concurrently, but not together.

      Responding to your last comment, honestly, that's kinda what drew me to OSRS. The fact that it's pretty much a "singleplayer MMO" in a lot of ways. I was never really drawn to joining a guild and doing group activities in MMOs, so I've always felt a draw to games where you can do nearly all of the progression yourself.
      I know what you mean. The way OSRS is designed, it kinda attracts players that aren't really interested in socializing as much as players who would play WOW, for example.

    a player with great items would head there. drop them.
    then log onto their other account and wait for them to appear
    of course. they prevented this evenutally. but it was fun seeing a geared high level players sneak off this beaten path like nobody is gonna notice.
    then see a low level run in.

It's actually rather peaceful down there, underneath the sea. It's the same kind of way Donkey Kong Country is eternal relaxing through its water levels. I discovered it over the spring break of 7th grade (2005) and by nature did not want to do much besides explore.
    Killed a lot of cows, and assumed Silverlight was THE strongest weapon in the game. And used only it and NO armor (I thought you looked cooler and more unique out of armor) for an insanely long time.
