- In this episode of building my dream shop we continue with Siga Majrex install which includes the interior corner detail I have been waiting to work on. We also need to perform some plumbing work, so we are officially plumbers now too right?
What do you think of the corner detail with the Majrex?

The back and forth banter between Kyle and Greg, ever since Greg got mic’d up, has been fantastic.
1. Purple primer is for inspections
2. Gluing both sides is best practice
3. Twist and hold for 30 seconds to prevent hydraulic expansion on the joint
30 seconds? a bit extreme
Uh-Oh.... a bubble in the tape. Here comes at least 10 sleepless nights
Kyle if you are free then Gregg deserves 2x's his normal pay. You guys are true craftsmans keep up the good work.
Greg is GREAT colleague!
Kyle, when you say "listen to my voice" in the corners, it reminds me of the amount of insulation R-value and sound proofing I had to achieve when building AV recording studios. You are constructing this shop as if it were a sound proof, air tight recording facility. Well done, and I appreciate your attention to detail.
I thought Kyle was saying “listen to my voice” in an attempt to hypnotize Greg. 😮
If you think about it, plenty of recording will happen in this building.
A bubble in the majrex or any other comparable vapour barrier is actually wanted in the corners. Since the building is going to move over the years, the majrex (or comparable) is supposed to be put up with a "dehnungsschlaufe", which roughly means expansion loop.
Hey, I’m pretty glad Gregg is doing all this work on your workshop for free that’s awesome that’s a great employee
Definitely wet both surfaces with a liberal amount of glue. In over 20 years, I have never had a problem because of using to much pvc cement. All kinds of bad stuff happens when you don't use enough. Can you imagine the time to locate and rework that would be caused by your plumber having to fix an air leak in that wall for inspection.
Have to agree with you. That is inconsiderate to not even read and follow the directions on the cans as to properly glue pvc pipe and fittings. Being that fussy about his own work and careless about the plumbing, I lost respect there. 25% of improperly and carelessly installed pvc connections leak.
If you show this to the inspector it will fail. At least it should. Vent piping still needs to be pressure tested to 5psi, which also is the equivalent of 10’ of water column. There was not even remotely enough solvent cement on those joint. I agree with not using primer only if code allows (plenty of 3rd party testing showing joints being actually stronger without primer), but only with a commercial grade solvent like IPS weld-on 781, but even then you need to solvent weld properly. Start solvent cementing the female socket, then the male end and if need be, back to the female end again. Solvent welding chemically fuses the pipe together, it doesn’t glue it. 100% put a pressure test on your plumbing piping before covering those walls. I will almost guarantee it fails, especially that bottom joint near the slab. When the shop smells like rotten eggs, you’ll know why. Best of luck, you’re gonna need it.
He should do a collab with Mike Patey, it would be a 9 hour video on caulking that gap.
Regarding Radon Gas: There are very accurate maps available that show the radon gas belt. It covers most of the US, but some areas are more concentrated than others. Northern Illinois is in one of the high concentration areas.
Greg’s singing was on point. 😂
I love my "Free" Milwaukee stapler.
I'm not a trained plumber but I've cemented tons of PVC. I had an old timer tell my 14 rotations around with the primer. Ans also apply the cement to the fitting or pipe before the primer totally dry. Also, a nice square cut on the pipe is essential because the fittings are tapered and the majority of the holding power is at the bottom of the fitting.
Primer/cement is a chemical reaction where the primer not only cleans the PVC but physically softens the pipe then the glue "welds" the joint together. You'll never use too much primer (aside from making a mess) but you can use too much glue. If you read the can, it will say to wipe away excess glue because it can actually make the pipe brittle. I was nervous seeing you not apply glue to the inside of the fitting. I hope it formed a good bond for you because getting to it later would be a nightmare. Thanks for opening yourself up to allow us all to learn and grow from watching/following along and having the courage to withstand what I can only imagine is constant critiquing from all angles in these comments.
I appreciate it also. I'm not a builder, just someone who wants to get a house built of my design, and watching these details and reading the comment section is very helpful for me.
Awesome. Every time I watch you apply the green Rissan tape I am astounded how well you do it. I recall doing my basement with Rissan and how difficult it was to not make a mess with the Rissan tape sticking to itself. You are the master in applying Siga tapes that are so sticky.
The old saying "A moment on the lips, a lifetime on the hips" can be thought of when building. Do the work now and enjoy the building for life.
Good reminder that, "Sometimes, wood can do... things."
I would seal the crack on the bottom, not only for air but for moisture.
18:28 OK, observation/idea. Make a plate that you can stand on, with a piece of pipe attached or something to set your roll on, instead of Greg's toe! I suppose you could get extra fancy with a roller bearing or something that fits loosely in the roll core. (Stand on the plate to hold it still)
Kyle, you are the new Norm Abrams , like him you are trustworthy and respected by millions people who just enjoy and are fascinated by your work .
Rich men north of Richmond is the song you were after, Greg! I love the random dialogue. 😂
love everything about this build ... just love it man
Love the corner detail! Crispy!
I enjoy watching these videos. Learning more each video.
Another good looking job Well done guys,
In the words of the song “oh lord it’s hard to be humble when you’re perfect in every way “ Kyle we may be an ocean apart but we are singing from the same hymn sheet! A man after my own heart! Go look the song up Willie Nelson that’s my theme song!
I wish you guys were closer. I would have you build my dream shop.
Great job!!!
Looks warmer in there Kyle. ❤
Job is moving right along and it 's looking awesome. These videos are so informative to even dummies like me.Go ahead and give eachother a pat on the back and yes that means the person doing this great video.
Great progress guyz! 😁👍🏼😁👍🏼
This amount of detailed insulation for the walls, can't wait to see the ceiling insulation. Well done fellas.
Boy, all that Rockwool and Majrex really gave you awesome acoustics.
I don’t think I’ve ever related to Greg more then when he started to hum “The Bare Necessities” while in the scissor life 😂😂 I thought I was the only one that did that throughout the day 😅
Always put solvent on both parts of the joint. It’s only a vent pipe but that’s a big risk for no reason. Only in gas pipe would you not put anything on the female.
Good morning looking good Great job 👍👌👍✌️🙏🙏👍
the purple cleaner and or glue is now code in some states as it shows the inspector that the joint is made and won't leak.
Satisfying to hear the echo finally stop
Interesting, thanks for the Radon info. Im in an old hoffman pier and beam home with a perimeter stem wall so im sure its irrelevant in my case due to crawlspace ventilation but definitely something to think about when i build my slab on grade ADU.
Great job Kyle & Greg.love the majrex.Better than 6mil.This is good to know ,/ how tight and sealed your installation is.Especially here in Canada where condensation is a huge problem .Thankyou. 👍💪
Greg needs to design a toe clip to attach to work boots to fit inside the Majrex center tube for support while you roll out the Majrex. Sell the design to Siga for royalties. Then Greg can get paid!!!
"I feel confident in my skills to do the glue", I hope so, cause you build massive structures from the ground up for a living! That are within 1/8 of an inch...Lol!
I knew it!! Kyle eats screws and sheet rock for breakfast. This man eats, sleeps, and breathes construction!
Amazing product and looks fantastic! I'm looking forward to next week and meeting you at the trade show? My builder is in the process of getting the spray foam installed this weekend, it's looking amazing already and he's only done the area he could reach from the ground so far! Take care and don't work to hard guys!!
My Man!!! I got a text from Martinez with your picture in it...was pretty cool...keep up the great work and videos.
Morning from Michigan
23:35 best comment ever in the history of this channel lol
The purple primer is necessary in some juristictions as the inspector can see that primer was used.
This is true in my region
“Only one person needs a roofing license.” “Good point”
Nail plate over the vent tube on the slab
Inspectors want to see the purple primer.
Good afternoon to you all
Very interested in doing this in my shop with the Rockwool. Question is, what do you do for the roof where there will not be a ceiling? My trusses will be completely open. I guess I "could" use Rockwool and a vapor barrier to hold it in place but that's not aesthetically pleasing. May just spray foam it but that's expensive and if I'm doing that I might as well just spray the whole building.
@@SteveSherman-ij5gm I would do the Rockwool myself. It is a great product, I used it on all of my interior walls in my home. Spray foam cost is stupid, this is WAY cheaper.
IF you move again there will be some queue to buy that place!
Maybe I missed it, but what are you doing for electrical? you put the vapor barrier up with tape so you'd have no holes, obviously anything but surface mount electrical is going to require holes in the vapor barrier.
Kyle...you have ruined it for me! I am now totally unable to watch any other construction videos put out by other builders, without critiques. You and Greg are perfection, and I love it! When I watch other builders have to rig something because their measurements were wrong, I say to myself, "Kyle and Greg wouldn't have measured wrong!" You guys are the only builders that I would let build a home for me. Keep up the perfect work! 😅
Kyle you should've put the double-sided tape On the vent pipe so the majRex could stick to the pipe to
Hey Kyle, check out Jamie Perkins doing the counter flash thing! 😅😅
Kyle - I'm a keen DIY-er and take away a lot from your videos in terms of standards for myself. But my day job is about as far from this kind of work as is possible (I'm a desk-bound lawyer who does something to do with investment funds) and I reckon I have taken away as much in terms of being humble and always willing to learn lessons, try new techniques, hold yourself to higher standards than anyone else on the team, etc. My firm probably won't sign off on my novel training programme to make all our junior lawyers watch 40 hours (and counting) of videos about building a workshop, but they really should.
@SteveSherman-ij5gm Thanks Steve, your input is always appreciated.
👍🏻
im deff gpnna hire Kyle to wrap my christmas presents !!
I’ll always remember when I was looking for a new to me house with my friend who was a new realtor, I showed her how to critically look at a house for how well it was built and maintained. I took her to a tract home in a new neighborhood of production houses. We looked at one house where it was obvious that the ceiling wasn’t coming square to the corners if you looked at it hard. I looked at her and said, “Now you know why they sell crown molding.” In the three months it took me to finally find a house that was custom built for a very obsessive engineer***, she knew how to tell if a home was well built and maintained or if they’d just put some lipstick on the pig as they got it ready to flip.
***How do I know was built by an obsessive engineer? Well, his ex-wife told me so. That and the 93 change orders that I found in the building plans and documents she left me. In the 19 months it took to get the house finished, she said he drove everyone crazy including her. So she divorced him. Their divorce was final three months after the house was finished and she got to keep it. Who said life is fair?
What i thought you were going to do is run the Majrex vertically down the corner and tape it (double sided like the studs or the Rissan) then attach the corner board so you do not build up in the corner and make your corners easier
Hey man, love your work! I’m the regional manager for CIDAN Machinery , what kind of metal folders /shears you using? I’d love to talk with you and help you lay out that shop for maximum efficiency. Let me know and we can set up a time r to talk and I can send you some videos and information on our machines!
Yeah. I had some HVAC contractors install a new furnace. They only used the "purple" primer on the PVC vent pipe. Months later, I noticed water dripping aka condensate. Called them up, and that tech found, NEVER glued the connections! "Primer is to clean the pipe fittings, then your coat both connections with PVC cement!" So lucky the pipes didn't separate as that would been CO2 poisoning...
Primer does not clean pipe fittings sir. Primer softens and melts joint a little so glue can bond strong. But I’m glad it didn’t turn out worst then what it already was for you. Thank god
The Siga is upside down! Probably not as efficient 😂
hey...seal the concrete floor with a hearty sealer and it will seal that crack
18:02 love it 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Is that a new custom tool belt? Think I saw a badger? I'm down to badger vs diamondback. Tired of my hammer hanging down and getting caught on stuff. I'm leaning towards diamondback. I like the flat bar holder since I carry flat bars on a roof a lot. Badger's is built in and I'm not sure it's wide enough. Would be cool if a store carried them locally so I could check them out.
Its behind the wall, no one will see it….it matters to me dude ! I know the feeling !
I can see the nuclear explosions going off in Kyles head because of his OCD, when Gregg brings out a knife to measure. That is great. You should be thankful I'm not there Kyle. You would need to see a therapist at the end of each week.
so could I use Rockwool and Majrex on my basement studio / office space? I like the idea of having it airtight and reduce moisture into the basement.
Yes
Kyle, you forgot humble!
Guys say insults they don't mean, girls say compliments they don't mean.
Since I have been watching this series I am startled at the corner level result, did you by chance check the board itself to see if THAT was the problem and not all of your previous works?
Probably half wood movement and half.the laser being out.
Why not put the small strip of tape on the concrete and pull it up the wall? Or is it to small contact area?
music is the international language!
Did we hear Greg sing a little "What Are We Waiting For?" by For King and Country?
Good looking, smart, brave and wonderful. LMFAO! How long did it take you guys to script that but whatever, more of it would be good.
Will you be switching to engineered lumber now after that corner issue.. 😂 i personally thought for how perfect you try to be youd already be there
Are you taking a thermal camera to the outside once you're finished?
first time watcher. Learning a ton. What does that SIGA Majrex do? is it a moisture barrier or air blocker?
Is this over kill for a shop, unless your going to live in it just saying
Where were the sponsors when I was putting 3000 hours of labor in my ranch-style tract house in Atlanta? Fight the good fight, fellows!
What is that vent pipe for? Is it for a floor drain, or from another part of the shop for other plumbing?
With the building being so air tight are you concerned about humidity issues at all down the road?
Does the SIGA seal in moisture? My question is, without power for a week, in the off chance that happens (assuming you have exterior wrap), does your building become a giant plastic sleeping bag? I fail to see how any of these modern builds with interior and exterior wrap (assuming the products perform per manufacture specifications) don't turn into mold factories. Sure, the rockwool cannot hold mold - but moisture can. Can your walls wick moisture? or does it just flow down. Do all new builds need wall drains?
All of this is puzzling to me. You are adding maybe 3 - 4R with the wraps, but adding 100% dependability on grid and a central air system. Seems counter productive.
Seems as though building now is not just building a 100 year product. It's building a 150 year product that has a laundry list of dependencies.
Also, to add. You are 100% trusting the products. Did Pfizer make the SIGA Majrex? Sure, Radon is out, but what are you trapping inside your building for the next 15 years of off gassing.
For the lift machine, is there a attachment/device to hold the weight of the roll of Majrex, so its easier to unroll?
That’s what Greg is for!
Doesn’t air come through the gaps and creates condensation? Future problems?
Waits for the "it's upside down" comments
While you were listing all of your attributes, I would give the credit to your parents by just saying, "He was raised right." And that says it all.
Isn't the LP sheathing already an air control layer?
just tape the bottom of the majrex again over the concrete to go right down to the horizontal floor
👍
Could be a bowed board throwing the corner off
"The bigger the pipe, the longer it takes". Greg is like... is that so.
So you see even a small country like Switzerland can bring you some good (better) solutions!
Nice solution in the corner for the maijrex. But what are you gonna screw your drywall or interior sheeting to, in the corner?
Wall girts (horizontal 2x4s or 2x6s) go up first, sheetrock or whatever gets screwed to that. Nailing the girts through the majrex won't be an issue if he nails it through the tape that the majrex is stuck to, as the tape will seal around the nail.
I guess the point im trying to make is that behind the maijrex (in the corner) there is nothing to connect anything to? Except the thin pice of plank.. 🤷🏻♂️
@@danielren6705Ah, *that* detail will definitely be covered in a subsequent video.
On next week episodes, we'll be taping the left/right and top/bottom seams of all the existing tape, and then caulking over the seams on THAT tape. 😂
Raydon can come through even without cracks in the concrete
How do you like your metabo impact drill.
