- The Tiny Desk is working from home for the foreseeable future. Introducing NPR Music's Tiny Desk (home) concerts, bringing you performances from across the country and the world. It's the same spirit - stripped-down sets, an intimate setting - just a different space.

Liz Phair's music was always meant to fill arenas. After a clever sleight-of-hand at the top of this Tiny Desk (home) performance, where it briefly seems we've returned to in-person sets behind Bob Boilen's desk, Phair and her backing band do their best to recreate the kind of set you'd see in a much larger space; everyone plugs-in, turns it up and rocks with an impressive light show.
Phair highlights three tracks from Soberish, her first new album in more than a decade, and the most reflective and beautiful record she's made. She starts with "Spanish Doors," a heartbreaking but hooky portrait of a marriage nearing its end. She follows with a song against loneliness called "In There," followed by "The Game," a meditation on the mind games that sabotage troubled relationships.
Nearly 30 years after her stunning debut, Exile In Guyville, Liz Phair's sound shines and shakes as much as it ever did - the ringing guitars, her deadpan delivery, the tight harmonies. But the themes have evolved from youthful defiance and indiscretions to wiser ruminations on the complications of growing older.
But Phair still finds joy and a playful sense of humor in her earliest work, closing her Tiny Desk with a generous version of "Never Said," from Exile. "Put your way-way-back hat on," she says as the band kicks in. When it's all over she asks for "tiny clapping for the Tiny Desk... ...We enjoyed almost being there."

I got hooked on her after hearing Exile in Guyville... she was in my town performing at a pretty small and intimate venue that would have been a totally awesome experience, but I wasn't feeling good that night so didn't go, figuring I'd catch her next time. But then "Never Said" went really big and don't think she ever came back to do really small shows again. I have always kicked myself about that, but I've enjoyed bigger concerts and pretty much everything she's done ever since. She definitely deserves being called one of the most influential indie musicians of the 90s.

There's just something about Liz Phair and her music that makes me happy.😁👍
I've heard of Liz Phair for ages, but never heard her & the band play before. TY for the concert and light show!
👏👏👏👏🙌👋👋👋👋
These "home" concerts make me smile so much. I want to live in a world where Liz Phair has a 40-foot video wall in her basement and if they turned the camera around there'd be a washer/dryer and a bunch of boxes.
What a home Liz Phair has.
IKR. It's stunning like a hitec disco.
Liz, 30 years loving you! ¡Bellísima siempre!
the queen of indie
I love her so much. Its still june and all but i know Soberish is my favorite album of the year, period.
sad.
I love how her voice has gotten stronger, but kept the same tone and vibrato.
Also, love how much Soberish is channeling Exile, which is the greatest album ever recorded.
Agreed!
she's done some training / excercises...obviously a stronger voice than she had before..
@@mlmn3080 Please stop with proclaiming that Exile is the greatest album ever recorded, completely
over the top and based upon what, exactly?
This is really stretching the defenition of tiny desk
really not a tiny desk at all haha
It’s a tiny concert, which is the intent in the original title. It’s not a desk though.
@@gidgidi it always says tiny desk concert
yes thank you sir!
Next month's Tiny Desk Concert will be held at Madison Square Garden
Thank you NPR. You so get me.
I love her so much!
amazing. literally one of the greatest songwriters of our time
Oh this woman has not been on my radar so far, it has to change so order Soberish and Exile in Guyville. Thank you Tiny Desk
Her self-titled got slammed by critics but in hindsight, it's actually been recognised as pretty good, I recommend it too. Little Digger is a gut punch.
Definately Exile In Guyville - It's a masterpiece (Look at some reviews) and groundbreaking at the time as there really were no women on the scene doing what she did with that record. She forged the way for women in the indie scene for years to come from up to today with Lindsay Jordan of Snail Mail, Sophie Allison of Soccer Mommy to Pheobe Bridgers and many more consider her influential.
Exile in Guyville..one of the all time great records. Long live Liz!
Liz is such an icon
Bring her back NPR 🙏✨🎸🫦
Hope to hear some Funstyle and s/t songs when she tours along with these new Soberish tracks! Her three best albums IMO. Too many people are stuck in 1993.
Love ya Liz! ❤
LIZ PHAIR IS THE BEST!!!!!!!!
wow i
Looking so forward to seeing you in Dallas this August 😍
Liz i love you and your style!WoW!
That's a big home
Legend! Great to see!
TINY DESK WITH UTADA HIKARU PLEASEEEEE (happy pride month!!!!!)
Wish she would do old stuff...her first album will always be my favorite!
Me too but with all the f-bombs on Guyville it might be a little rough on these "all-ages" NPR concerts. :)
she played never said...
@@troy8420 IIRC one of the few profanity-free songs on the album!
Maam she has a new album to promote 💀
She was good back in the day. She actually got better.
WE NEED A BILLY STRINGS TINY DESK!
una gozada de concierto
Awesome show, Liz! So excited to hear your new music. Keep 'em comin', gf!
Yup, that's gotta be a pretty big home.
But she's allowed it.
The Suzanne Vega one was the most Tiny Desk thus far.
Not picking holes.
One does love Liz Phair.
Loved it all, creativity still flowing strong
Can anyone sing a Phair song but her? Vocal melodies always out of left field. 😊
Moderately sized classroom desk concert🎸This is sooooo good Liz & band! Now for the bad news.....forgot my library card, 😔.....again!
Wooo!
❤️❤️
Putting on my way, way hat 🧢nnnnnnnnnow!👍
The years have been kind to her looks and her voice!
I just found Liz this album and love her serious-music arranging so much 😂
Exlie In Guyville is a must if you're only now discovering her.
queen
Супер!
Gotta watch out for Lizs’ double barrelled new songs! So exciting!😃
❤️❤️❤️❤️
👏
Hit like show. 🕯
And I'm sorry for not being active for long, so any loyal fans should text me back please
Why can't I?
Because you have to wait 22 hours more.
Only read the name - liked prematurely 🙃 Don't judge me, I love her even tho musically she's nothing like the one I fell for. There are still these overtones in the voice that can't be mistaken.
Hope she plays Flower
Sounds like the Go-Go's or The Bangles
Hmm. A little. But no female harmonies and no ultra-perky.
Bite your tongue!!!
Liz Phair with a full band in front of a green screen. This is what we're doing now? Nothing stripped down, just full on marketing for a new release. This channel has lost all relevance. I say that as a very old fan of both Liz Phair and tiny desk concerts. Both are pretty much unrecognizable at this point.
Is liz single
Why Can't I?
Intrigued by the guitarist cut up pants.
Like a 15 year old.
'Cool'.
Ripped jeans have been a thing since the 2000s. It's basically retro at this point
Tiny desk???? Baaah
zzzzzzzzz....
Lilith Fair?
High school garage band.
At of all this concert is boring
So, absolom, you were bored through a 4-song set that you stayed to listen to? 😒🙄
@@amandawilcox9638 so what if I had nothing to listen to
@@amandawilcox9638 it was a little on the dull side .The new songs didn't really impress and never said is one of the weaker tracks from Exile but it got played on the radio so I guess Liz still feels like she to play it.would have been cool to see them tackle Mesmerizing or Supernova.
@@ciaranosullivan9352 Understood. I might have felt the same, if I knew her playlist well. But, 60's girl here. Never heard her before; just familiar with the name.
I wonder if these young people backing her up wonder why there are no bands for them to join or place to create this type of music and they haveto back up a artist from 30 years ago because thee music of their generation sucks so bad.
❤️❤️❤️
