Liz Phair-I came late to her music. I was in my late 30s. What blows me away, is that she is so much more sexy, in the best most empowering ways, than any other writer of rock and roll. She is so in touch with intimacy, in all its guises. She blows me away. She is the real deal. I listen to her every day. I can't get "Little Digger" out of my head, as a mother and a daughter.
I've always found that so attractive about her her honesty just her being herself highly intelligent woman beautiful of course but she doesn't involve herself with so-called stardom and such
What a waste that I never really paid much attention to Liz back in the 90's like I should have. Discovering her now fills me with melancholy but... better late than never! I probably wouldn't have understood her as well as I can now anyway.
I was fortunate. I was in my early thirties when the Chicago scene hit and lived just 60 miles away from Chicago. Saw all the local bands...Material Issue, Smashing Pumpkins, Urge Overkill, Liz Phair, and others. Phair put on a great show. Actually got to meet her once through a friend of my then gf whose boyfriend played in a few local Chicago bands (that's a mouthful lol). I believe I said "so nice to meet you" and she replied "likewise".
I still remember the day I bought Exile in Guyville at the Tower records in Tacoma. Masterpiece. I've always loved her. Amazing talent, remarkable woman.
I remember hearing word of mouth about her and hearing a snippet of Never Said. I bought the cassette and have followed her ever since. She fueled my growing desire for true independent rock music. I'm eclectic, liking nearly all music, but she opened up another appreciation door for me.

People often and easily throw around words like smart, edgy, creative, soulful, and thoughtful when describing artists ... but in the case of Liz Phair, it's truly appropriate.
"It seemed to me that the music industry was filled with gamblers, thieves and pimps." That checks with what the late Hunter S. Thompson said: "It is a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free and good men die like dogs, for no good reason. There's also a negative side."
I respect her as an artist and breaking barriers but as a fellow Midwestern we dont need to plump our feathers were not new York or Los Angeles artist do just fine maybe not celebrity status but chicago is good
From scanning your output...you seem to push your sexuality to sell your product...then complain about the atmosphere you had to endure is a little complicit in your vision from your "shell"...but that's the money part of the music business...Bravo! Sail on...
@@WhatsCookingTime You are "missing" the hypocritical edge she seems to justify in the interview...some people never "grow" as musicians...I just didn't see the boundaries people said she was pushing...sounded a little contrived to me as a musician and songwriter myself...as she herself claims that she learned guitar and the "ropes" on the fly...and like I said... more power to her!!!
Apparently her move to what passes as "pop" wrecked her career, at least for her "indie rock" fans. But frankly what is considered her "best" music is a lot of boring self-involved BS to me, and that is true of most of her peers (at least to me), and today's "music" goes in one ear and out the other; it's worse than what some people used to call "elevator music" because it puts people in a bad mood (of course there is some truth to the saying "feeling good about feeling bad." It says a lot of the self-involvement of the current audience that they consider such music "great." I actually find the 2003 stuff that Phair recorded that a lot of people found a "betrayal" listenable, but that before and after it boring, depressing and forgettable. Why do you think that even today's films and television ads, when they need music for a certain "feel," seem to find it from 60s, 70s and 80s so often?

Liz Phair is and has ALWAYS been amazing.
Liz Phair still looks amazing ❤️🔥

Brother, I am here, a year after you...and in the same frame of mind. I have her music on in the background and wondering how I could have missed her.
Yup
Same boat...

Yeah she should just own the fact that she's sexually explicit and not try to hide it behind the me-too slogan
I don't see her pushing a sexuality anymore than any woman she's a lot more than just that

I like her music. The feminazi Patriarchy talk is sickenging though.
