    This game single handedly defined my love for dungeon crawlers back in 2006 and I remember playing the demo on my the family computer and since the demo only had the first 3 floors and you couldn't go any further I would just keep replaying it over and over again. I had heard about Diablo from my cousin who I also watched play RuneScape and Guild Wars which got me both into those games as well I was never able to get Diablo because of obvious southern mom reasons. When I'd go to my dads house he also had the Fate demo on his computer and he saw me playing it all the time and asked me how I was playing it if no one bought it for me and told him it was just a demo and not the whole game, he then proceeded to go to Walmart with me to see if we could find the CD and sure enough right next to all the pc games of the time there it was and man did I play the absolute hell out of it. I've went back to play it here and there, but I recently got really into Diablo 3 which was fun, but after getting kinda bored from it I decided to give Diablo 2 Resurrected a chance since I always wanted to try it, and man I've loved it so much and wish I would have been able to play it as a kid. Just really grateful for the game as a whole.
    Also side note while the random generated boss that you have to beat as the main "story" of the game is always a random uniquely named enemy depending on the difficulty you set the game on will determine how far down dungeon wise the final boss is, it does seem to vary though if you choose the same difficulty several times. Also summoning venomous wyverns are seen as one the best summons in the game, but where the real meat and potatoes are at is the defensive magic type getting skills like dervish, spectral armor, and a few more that I can't remember the name of it are insanely over powered and I believe most characters go this route as offensive magic spells from what I can remember weren't the best. One other thing I remember was that since Grove was so small they could use the rest of there assets on the dungeon part itself and it is in theory "an unlimited amount of dungeon floors" do the degree that you would never be able to go that far without the console commands, also if you were able to go that far down eventually it would make the dungeon floor into a negative number and if you know anything about how negative integers work in software programming, than you know you don't want to see it because the game is basically broken at that point. Anyways just love talking about this game as it was a big part of my childhood and I will always have a special place in my heart for it. Loved this video!

    Oh my I played this when I was like 8 or 9 I’m 22 now and I just randomly thought about it. I found it in a thrift store along with a couple other pc games. It was one of the first games I ever played. I faintly remember it scaring me and I would always hesitate to go back in the dungeon. Such a old memory. Thanks for the nostalgia

    So I had a Toshiba laptop back then that had a type of “games store” loaded on it, developed by wild tangent. You got a certain amount of tokens a day, and tokens let you play demos. I used my tokens ALOT on Fate, virtual villagers, Nancy drew games, and Diner Dash. Thank you for reminding me!

I played a ton and would make new characters every now and then but every time i logged on to the game id see my grandfather's character absolutely ROIDED AND DRIPPED OUT 😂😂 he always had the coolest items and was always such a high level. Actual legend. Love that guy. I come back to this game every now and then and always have a great time. Such a lovely game.

My cousin realized that if you died, you could give some of your experience points to resurrect, allowing you to use collected points to upgrade your skills cuz once you hit level 6, you couldn't spend your points anymore. I agree with most of what he's saying, other than what he said on the magic. There are plenty of buff spells and the amount of mana you have is based on how many points you put off into that category when you level up. He just didn't try to upgrade on magic enough to even try it out effectively. I'm even able to make a strong wizard build, as I'm doing now. There is only one type of wizard-based weapon in the game and that would be the staffs, but they're two-handed weapons. Making it to where I can't use a shield or an additional weapon. Even so, I'm still taking bosses and their army/hoards out with ease.

    is it just me, or was fate a little creepy sometimes? it 100% primed me to be scared of the twisting minecraft caves in the future, and the spider model was the creepiest thing I'd ever seen in the world of my child-safe video games.
    i know the words "liminal" and (god-forbid) "backrooms" have kinda become fancy trope buzzwords with no meaning, but THOSE dungeon ruins with the parapets and the smooth, rectangular holes/pools remind me of those now, and always have freaked me out.
    even now looking at them makes my skin crawl. it feels so uncanny to me, like those dreampools and similar liminal spaces do today.
    and jfc, the MIMIC CHESTS.
    i'm surprised you didn't mention the mimics. those were TERRIFYING, man.
    that or i was just a literal baby, lol

    • @IAmTheSnuggler
      @IAmTheSnuggler  2 года назад +1

      youre totally right! I'm sure if I played Fate by myself originally as a kid I'd find it a lot more scary but there is still something slightly creepy. Liminal is a good word. I would guess that's cause everything is under that very childish and friendly-seeming artistic style, so something you feel diverges from it in an unsettling way becomes twice as freaky.
      Lol I even realized that I should've talked about the mimics in the vid but forgot! TBH there is a lot I left out. Who knows maybe people are burnt out hearing about mimics cause of the dark souls series haha

      @@IAmTheSnuggler still a great video without the mention of that particular bit of childhood trauma! tbh i'm glad anyones talking about this game on yt at all, bc for a solid chunk of my life i almost thought it was a dream i had-
      growing up kinda poor in the 00's me and my older sister basically only had the demo loop for computer games that weren't edutainment, so we quickly became masters at it.
      well, my SISTER became a master at it, meanwhile i was too freaked out to play it alone much and would just start playing the polar bowler demo and random flash games instead lol

      @@IAmTheSnuggler the core gameplay loop stays essentially the same in Fate: The Traitor Soul, but there is just more variety to the game as a whole. More loot, new gear slots 4 total races that have different starting stats and gear etc. It feels a lot better to play as well compared to the previous two.

      Thanks man! Appreciate the kind words. Also, it's worth noting that many of the Torchlights devs were also the ones who worked on Fate (including the head dev Travis Baldree) so it's less copying somebody else's idea and more reusing their own idea :)

    I really enjoyed playing this game ("Fate" on Wild Tangent Games), it's quite the nice little dungeon-crawler RPG adventure game. I think this game should be ported to different consoles... I've recently downloaded a game called "Fate/GO" (created by Aniplex, Inc.) that reminds me of this older gem ("Fate" by WildStudios/WildTangent)... #FATE #WildTangent #WindowsGames #FATEGO #AniplexInc #AndroidBasedGames #FATEGame

    How did torchlight not get sued by fate? I get it’s the same guy behind it but he left the studio the make a carbon copy of the game in a new studio, with all the major features there (and I vaguely remember before torchlights release they acted like it was ground breaking).
    I always find the “Diablo clone” moniker funny. Frankly given the way ppl talk about Diablo (which barely any part wasn’t done before 96), Diablo is no Diablo. It can’t live up to the hype (rose tinted glasses), but to be fair they did have the unique and complex story or heaven vs hell with the mortal realm as the battlefield, just how did they come up with that….
    But this? It’s the same game reskinned, surely the original studio held rights, at least at the time if not still.

    • @IAmTheSnuggler
      @IAmTheSnuggler  9 месяцев назад

      Yeah man, honestly I have no clue and that's a good point. From what I can tell, it's very weird a studio like Wild Tangent made a game like Fate in the first place. Maybe by the time Torchlight came out they weren't even concerned with making games like that anymore they just let it go. TL was popular but it's not like it was some runaway success. I have no clue how these things work behind the scenes. I was very shocked when I was in a bookstore recently and saw this very odd-looking Fantasy themed romance book and recognized the author's name. It was Travis Baldree
