CAN WE TAKE A MOMENT TO APPRECIATE THE ART FOR THIS
Viktor Hernandez agreed! do we know who the artists is?
It's a bit shitty of them not to credit the artist.
Wanted to comment the same, it was amazing!
Agreed I would buy a comic of this one shot without a doubt.
The art was absolutely on-point. Great grasp of the individual characters, as well as making them look unmistakably like John, Wil, and Felicia. The only quibble is that his/her Powell's isn't neeeeeaarly big enough.
"Too bear for owls. Too owl for bears." is immediately going on my dating profile.
Don't forget the icon!
@@RedBear345 I just looked up Knob Goblin on Urban Dictionary and, of course, it means exactly what I thought it did, lol.
Why does that sound Persona 5 ish
"There is no crying in the occult"
I love that soo much!
That and the bit during the creation portion of "are we okay with this? 'Cause I'm not."
"I'm not calling it magic!" I lost it
If "Boo!" do not proceed to "Boo hoo," in other words.
John played this out perfectly. Not only was he into his character, but he spent and saved his fate points perfectly. He had them when he needed them.
TURN THIS INTO A SERIES, DAMMIT!
Also maybe bring back titans grave too, please.
I would love a series of Fate Core one shots that they just wing as they go.
You can really tell that John Rogers is a writer. I love how his character is reacting to the story unfolding. He is soooo into his role!
He was brilliant in Fiasco ... two of the best Tabletop episodes.
Muck006
Oh shit, I forgot he was on Fiasco! Great then and he's great now.
love the Librarians
Will they go to space? Will they go underground? Portland. They'll go to Portland.
So if this is the future...then Nick Burkhardt somehow failed in his mission (along with the other Grimms) and let Vessen run wild or something.
IN the spirit of GRIMM keeping portland weird. A lot of fictional supernatural seems to originate in portland/oregon. Gravity falls is set in Origin.
Leo Nosek there's also a podcast called The Bryon Chronicles that's set around the Portland Area
+
Theres also a lot of wild-ass freaky shit that goes on in Portland on a normal Thursday
I really wouldn't mind seeing this as a series
Will Finazzo Quite honestly? I think this would 've made an even better Titansgrave than Titansgrave.
Fringe meets Supernatural.
.....ish.
there is a rollplay series that uses this system it's called Nebula Jazz and it has many people that have been on table top before
I would actually pay money for this to be a playable setting. It feels like a Supernatural version of The Division, but with no bullet-sponges.
Will Finazzo yes please
Admittedly, for this game to work, you need players like them: fun, creative, into the story, coming up with amazing things on their own instead of getting spoonfed by the GM. This was an amzing and fun game but please, please, please, post the full version! So much important stuff gets lost with the (amazing) editing!
True, I think Fate focuses mostly on collaborative storytelling, with pretty much everyone in an equal position to change the way a story goes. Not everyone will mesh together well, but with the right group that could be pretty epic.
Also the GM encouraging them to add in new interesting things by asking questions like “what is the horrific artifact that is in your hand when you come back” and using compels really well helped things flow smoothly.
Coming back at this cause I just started running FATE and if you've ever seen Aabria Iyengar run D&D she's a good example of a DM that'll do well with FATE; asking lots of questions to hand over the reins to the players.

"IM NOT CALLING IT MAGIC"
the line of the session
Daniel Irvine followed closely by "where is this magical git!"
This is the sort of shit that makes me happy RUclips exists. There's so many good GM's, and seeing game creators play the thing they create is always a real treasure.
John Rogers needs to be on an rpg episode at least once a season. He's gets so into it.
Oh my God I love the compel system! I'm so tired of players playing as a strategist instead of as their characters. If they're drunken addicts like the Doc, they should act like it, whether it's a good time to do so or not! Also, this needs to be a series. Whether it's a TableTop series or a TV series is up to you guys, but I need this in my life.
Kasey Mathews I can see this more as a TV series, the ratings would be through the roof, as long as they get actors that actually love this type of stuff
That's just a playstyle, innit? It's definitely up to the player how they play their game. Some are pure gamers, some are pure roleplayers. It happens
@@MagizardInternet While it is up to the players, there's also a problem in that groups tend to want things to run efficiently, and for everyone to act like a team player. Fate rewards players for doing bad things that make sense for your character. Other systems don't. This means that the group will often see the roleplayer who plays into their characters' flaws as not supporting them enough.
Then what's the point of the _RP_ part of rpg, right?
@@OGEdger The problem is too many gamers "roll play" instead of "role play" their focus is on the clicky clack of dice over being creative and using their own creativity.
Quite possibly the Best Table Top Episode of all time. So very enjoyable to watch actors and writers riffing in a Fate game.
I haven't played this system, and I don't know if it's part of the system, or more likely just Ryan's style as a GM for a one shot in this system, but the collaborative world building to make the setting is fan-freaking-tastic. As someone who usually GMs for any group I play in, I also really dig the compel system. It annoys me when players ignore their character concepts, or forget them, and being able to say "Naw, this is what happens, go with it" is amazing as long as the players are ok with that.
The collaborative world building is part of the system (and Ryan is a great GM.) You should really try it out if you can.
Is there a guide for GMs with this system? Because after watching this, I'm amazed at how Ryan steers things without conflict, disagreement, etc. And it seems like he has a general outline in his mind of how the story is going to go. Or maybe it's just improvised as they go? I'd love to learn more about it...
Ye this was beyond awesome. Seens hard to GM properly, but God dammit this was amazing. I want to buy this system now and try it.
I'm currently running a one-shot in Fate Core and I definitely find it easier to GM that your typical D&D session. You just have to leverage your players to help out as needed.
Does sound like it needs a lot less pre planing, wich is something that has been putting me off GMing D&D lately, take awhile to prepare the adventures, encounters and whatnot. On Fate it seens that as long as you have the outline of the story set the rest builds itself with the help of the players.
God, I'd watch the hell out of weekly FATE CORE with Felicia and Will.
If they don't bring all 4 of them back for a weekly show, they are missing out. I was completely captivated by this and found myself leaning forward towards the screen by the end.
So was I, this was just plain amazing. There were even a few jaw drop moments for me!
One of the things I love most about FATE is that you can just say "I'm going to leave these skills/stunts/etc open to discover during play" and that's not only OK but encouraged.
This game captured some of Wil Wheaton's only good dice rolls to ever occur in his lifetime
This is blowing my mind. The sheer number of "OHHHHHHHHHH"s that have come out of my mouth is ridiculous. More than the plot-twistiest tv show or movie.
The way you're playing this collaborative world building I could see that style as great for teaching new GMs while playing a game.
Starting to GM with an "undefined world" is a bad idea.
I mean purely for having the characters collaborate in the world, the GM would be experienced, and the 3-4 other people would be the learners.
While it could be viewed as training, the collaborative world building is more important to make sure the players are invested in the world. Some people believe that any GM should be able to do that, but there is a unique connection the players have to the world when they can make the world themselves and see that yes, in fact the world is made for them. It also helps to remove the stigma that the GM is against the players, as the players have control over more than just their players.
In the Dresden Files version of this system the City and teh main plot is all built in this style. It is a fantastice set of rules and worth getting if you like that Series.
Wow. This is really selling me on the Fate Core system. I want to play it!
Played a western game with it once. Had a blast, can't say enough good things about it when it comes to everyone being in on the storybuilding.
Not so great if you have people with limited imagination and/or powergaming mindset.
After watching this and hearing the Adventure Zone, I also really want to play this system.
So this was basically an amazing episode of Fringe as narrated by super good RPGers and a stunning GM! I mean we had the older scientist who's always high as a kite and gets very irascible, the cynical guy that's just in it to save the world and the woman who's actually at the centre of the whole mythology! I know I took a couple of liberties, but still, it's persuasive. Loved the episode
John Rogers is a MASTER at creating an awesome story for a character, you could almost make a show about someone like Dr. Osgood.
"Your aunt Gillian has taught you how to manipulate quantum mechanics in a non-traditional way manifes-"
"Magic."
"I'M NOT CALLING IT MAGIC!"
Glorious.
Zurrdroid john rogers was Brilliant in this
"So... Physics doesn't work anymore. Okay are we all cool with that? *I'm* not cool with that..."
Uh! I want this story line to be a whole series! That was so much fun to watch!!
I loved John Rogers in the Fiasco episode, glad he's here.
Barely 10 minutes in and this is scratching my Titansgrave itch :)
Why is there no KS for a new season of Titansgrave?
The Fiasco double-episode is still as of today my favourite ever from TableTop.
John Rogers makes everything better.
Fiasco is weird.
WIl Wheaton is not rolling sh*tty every time? What kind of perverted alternate universe have we gone to?
tomleimbach idk everyone died last year and things are getting politically... interesting?
trump got elected, so yeah.... we are in the worst alternate reality, sorry.
Nathan Wubs, It's not the worst reality, Hilary could been the President. Now Excuse me while I go back to my reality were I'm the Grand Enslaver of Mankind.
Anyone can get elected if they run aganst Hiliary.
If you want a real answer, it's because the fate dice are designed to most often curve toward average rolls. So if you have a numbered skill rating you will tend to at least not do terrible most of the time. It's way different than d20 which has much more wild values.
I just want to say that Ryan Macklin makes GMing look easy. Obviously he knows his system inside and out but watch how he lets the player's abilities shine and how he keeps them engaged with his pacing. I don't know how long that game actually lasted but it's really a testament to his skills (and the rules system) that the players got more and more engaged as the game went on.
I thought I played RPGs. I didn't. A game where the GM often fades into the background, letting the players tell the story? Yes, better players than around my table, by far, but this GMing is something awesome.
It's more of a trait of those "new" story-focused RPG, but try and let some of that slip into your regular D&D sessions. I'm doing more and more of that, and it works amazingly well (at least in sandboxy environs).
It's something I remember doing in an RPG group back in the late 90s/early 00s. We had a what we called Story Master (hey, we were teenagers) who was in charge of keeping the story on track, but players would chime in often with things their character would see happen, and usually the Story Master would let it happen and steer the story to fit how the campaign was evolving.
I feel like this is more "Storyteller" than "RPG" (That is not a bad thing)
@@Uejji We play a game called "You wake up in a dungeon" which is basically that :P
@@natanoj16 It's a full TRPG, simply more modern and exploring new ways to play the game.
Fate Core is one sexy ass game system and apparently John Rogers is a god of awesome character building.
John Rogers is the lead writer for the show _Leverage._ He also authored the _Crimeworld_ section of the *Fate Worlds: Worlds in Shadow* book, so he knows the game.
I wouldn't be surprised if he took inspiration from Old Man Henderson.
His improv skills are off the charts.
Yeah, but it really requires a gaming group that is more interested in a storytelling experience than rigid adherence to rules. The Fate Core system doesn't really provide strict definitions of what many of these skills mean. For example, what is the definition of a skill called "observe" vs. a skill called "detect" or "perceive". I guess it doesn't matter as long as the gaming group is agreeable to the definitions and they are well known to each other. On the other hand, you can't necessarily use this system with people that are relative strangers...
"an event that got out on the news and everyone freaked out because the government was ill equipped to deal with it."
Watching this in 2020 really made event 0 seem pretty chill.
lol RIGHT!?
2021, two months in. It ain't any better so far.
Seeing this in May of 2021. You now know how right you were.
@@TheHiddenMana Same man.
2022, going on 2023, all I have to say is what event, because there are several
"The streets of Portland..filled with terrors, devoid of hipsters"
Sounds like a fair trade off to me. (yes I'm in Portland).
The amount and of teeth and claws?
the hipsters probably won't eat you. I hear cannibalism is difficult as a vegan.
20:55 when Felicia says she wants to tongue the NPC's skull hole and they all freeze for a couple seconds, had me laughing until my stomach started hurting.
Felicia, you are a goddess of dark humour and getting into character 😂💙
Had a group of friends , we used Fate to have a zombie version set in Johannesburg so we could fight zombies a la walking dead style in our own backyard , our laziness allowed us to use a road map of our city :) Was one of the best Table-tops I have ever seen because it is so simple and easy to use and rather focus on the story
it's completely doable that's the coolest part
Mr Handy are you based in Jhb? I’d LOVE to try this game but would prefer someone with some experience to run it...
"I'll be back from hell, soon!!".....Classic Osgood.
2:24 "Too bear for owls, too owl for bears."
I was starting to think that I was the only one who saw that. I want it on a t-shirt now.
I, too, would buy the crap outta that shirt.
I love that this is the running gag that started with Lords of Waterdeep, and is still going. The editors really went all-in on it this episode, even referencing being domesticated in Lords of Waterdeep.
4-ish years later...and I'm still down for this to be a series unto itself. The characters we soooooo goooooood!
I love tabletop, and you've had some great episodes and whatnot, but holy hell, this is probably the best show you've ever made! I would love to see more of this, maybe change our guests and scenarios, and keep this going! And props for all the hard work put in by the editors and the people who drew the scenes, they looked fantastic! Great job everyone
Have you seen Titansgrave? Because you should.
27:31
That was, by far, one of the best uninterrupted and cohesive ramblings I've heard spewed that made complete and utter sense. Wow. Bravo
That was one of the most creative and original settings I've seen in an rpg. Johns character was incredible and I really want to find out more about him.
Thanks for showcasing the Fate Core system. I've been curious for a long time and I think you just sold me on it. I freaking love this show!
Justin Abubo I really like how you can pick a few skills at the beginning and then decide a little later on what other things you are good at. It's a neat way to build your character rather than having everything planned out at the beginning
That's actually one of the ways of character creation - it's also possible (and default) to do a more traditional character-creation-up-front bit.
It was mostly the constraints of the show that had them improvising skills and stunts on the fly. I mean, if you were playing Dungeons & Dragons, a DM *could* let a wizard decide what spells he has memorized spur of the moment as well.
On-the-fly character creation is listed as an option in the book, and is actually the default if using FAE.
fate-srd.com/fate-core/quick-character-creation
You can leave some Aspects and Stunts unchosen at the start of the game, but the rules say you should fill in all the Skills in your "pyramid" before play. The GM was "winging it" a bit too much. The game has sections about what makes a good Aspect or the possible types of Stunts. It is a new type of "philosophy" not seen in other games that have predefined skills and powers. You need to adjust and balance aspects, and as the players pick Aspects or Stunts the GM may have to help them adjust it or balance it a bit. You will want at least most Aspects and Stunts in your "holster" at the beginning unless you are super-experienced at the game.
Omg I love the artwork!
I want to know who does it. It reminds me of BPRD.
As much as I love DND, I love how cooperative this system is and how the system doesn't get in the way of the story. I also like how your character concept is absolutely central to your character.
Seriously Ive watched this 3 times now, Love this story and system.Wish this was a two parter jus cause parts seems jumpy and Id really like to analyse like a full session so I can try and understand the rules better.
So like, a series devoted to this game please?
I 2nd that.
Trace Ridge yes plz!
yes I need it in my life
Yes please
two minutes of character design, and they've come up with more plot points than the writers of TNT, AXN, CW and NBC combined
You should watch the Fiasco episodes of tabletop
that's probably _the one episode_ I haven't seen lol
I dunno about the CW - there isn't a more plot-packed show on the networks than iZombie.
They are writers by trade at least will and Felicia are. Darn it i wanna movie of this now like a 4 hour epic.
Macklin wrote the game, and John Rogers is lead writer for the TV show *Leverage* (says in the video).
Also, Rogers mentioned that he USED Fate to set up characters for *Leverage*, but what he didn't mention is that he authored one of the game worlds for Fate: _Crimeworld_ in *Fate Worlds In Shadow*.
Really cool game system, amazing GM and John Rogers' Doc. Osgood was SOO GOOD !...and what an amazing job they did on drawn characters and game fields representation ! What an episode !
I agree, it only seems to have a 'did I fail or not' mechanic, which could be achieved with any ol' D6. The gamemaster being allowed to mess around with things is nothing new; any game allows that, it's the f-ing gamemaster.
Rule 0: The GM is always right
_"Story trumps rules!"_
+Geek&Sundry Please post the full game. This is an excellent example of Fate Core and a lot of the stuff that you skipped over acts as a great tutorial for those who are looking to get into it. Stuff like fleshing out character creation, world creation and world aspects are integral to setting the story, so making that available for us to see would be amazing.
This. I would love that. Probably too late now but if there's a chance ...
Yes yes yes!!!
I don't think they skipped it. They did the Quick Character creation from what I can see.
@@natanoj16 In Fate, a lot of thought has to go into crafting effective Aspects and Stunts. They must have edited out the head-scratching bits where they worded and re-worded and negotiated an Aspect or a Stunt carefully, to be balanced and to ensure an Aspect might be used as both a benefit and to complicate a character's life on occasion. Their spontaneous choices just trip off the tongue, that's _gotta_ be edited! :-) But we will know more if they ever release the unedited footage.
@@Dracopol I don't really think that they cared much about any balance in this round. It was a one shot, it's not gonna continue, it's just style all the way.
This one needs a series on here. Probably the most enjoyable RPG game watching experience for me so far. Thoroughly enjoyed this episode.
Kiley Sekulich off the cuff like this flows perfectly for short episodes
Wow, one of the best episodes of Table Top in quite a while!
FINALLY! I've been waiting for this since John said he had recorded it AGES ago! Love Felicia too, of course, but Rogers is one of my favourite people in the world and we don't get enough of him...
"Tell me about the time you accidentally infected Jillian."
"You reach down, you flip the tortoise on its back Leon..."
Its like poetry, it rhymes.
John really made this amazing. Totally stood out and took his roleplay to the next level. I'd love to see him back in a FATE CORE or Titansgrave video.
I love the interaction between Game Master and players in this. But due to the "build as you go" set up, it looks difficult for less experienced players or groups that don't know each other well.
Anyway great episode!
OMG!
That's RYAN Macklin.
I *KNOW* Ryan. I didn't know he was creating GAMES! (Shows you what kind of cave I live in.)
Mind blown.
A dagger made from the skull of Aaron Sharp xD I love it
Yeah, and by the looks of the art, Osgood either found Aaron's remains as a shrunken head, or he killed aaron via shrunken head voodoo magic.
of Z-listers?
You gotta have nathan fillion on the show
CelticFrost Agreed
Only if Nathan gets to say "Shut up Wesley" repeatedly. He IS a captain of a spaceship after all!
get Sir Patrick Stewart for that
yes! please!
There are many derivative Fate games by 3rd-parties. You might like Diaspora: players define a cluster of only 6-12 star-systems, and travel to the next world over, for trade or whatever, takes several days. Players roll dice to define star-system characteristics like Technology, Environment and Resources but also come up with Aspect phrases for its main characteristics. It is for an earlier version of the Fate rules called FATE 3rd-edition. Characters have more Aspects and Skills to keep track of than in Fate Core and some rules are different. If the role-playing breaks down you are able to jump to the "mini-games": Personal Combat, Platoon Combat, Ship Combat or Social Combat (graphically moving to people on a Social Map and then moving them to your point of view).
Rules are viewable for free at www.vsca.ca/Diaspora/
"When I return from the portal, I am clearly a year older and I don't remember anything that happened" is a trope that never goes out of style. Love it!
This game should be made into a show. I would watch the hell out of this.
Holy crap John Rogers gave one amazing monologue.
this needs to be a on going series
it makes me so happy seeing people having so much fun idk why
This was freakin' amazing. Halfway through it I just thought "this would be an awesome tv show". Big props to all four of them for bringing this story to life so vividly. A game for story tellers.
That was fucking amazing. In my mind, maybe the best episode to date.
Watching a group of strangers play a game ... this show has NO right to be as entertaining and fun to watch as it is. What is this sorcery?!
Is... is there an extended edition of this?? :D
Anthony Ritchie it needs a Geekandsundry spinoff show.
a suggestion: watch Nebula Jazz
Yeah no I totally want more of this. This was amazing.
Anthony Ritchie Just wait until the full Season is done for Extended versions afterwards.
Yeah except they don't really do extendeds anymore....
Okay that whole part where a year goes by is actually really cool. This seems like a universe that exists in comics or something.
More Fate Core! That was a fun game and does an excellent job of showcasing just how versatile a system it is. Thank you all for putting this up! You got some real talent in Ryan to run this for you!
John Rogers commented that he used FATE CORE when making the characters for The Librarians. I would love to see those sheets!!
Me too, it’s my favorite show!
I wanted to thank the artist for their drawings.. for me the illustrations really added to the story.
They are destroying the aspects, like in a good way! Every one of the aspects is so well written and fits the tone of the game. Also who ever did the art for this really elevated it to the next level.
I formally request a Fate Core! 2 where the team continues onwards.
This episode and everyone in it was fantastic. Would love to see more!
That was insane! I totally just bought a lot of Fate Core junk.
For a long time, I've had this idea for a campaign that I called the "writers room" concept, with everyone collaborating to spend each session creating an episode like you would for a show, and this is exactly that.
John Rogers is FANTASTIC. Holy wow!
This was one of the best tabletop episodes ever! Very well done all.
I love this. I would like to see a Dresden Files RPG campaign on here. You might even get Jim Butcher as a guest and/or player!
Frank van Schie this would be awesome.
Somebody needs to make it so.
Jim actually doesn't play (at least DF RPG). I've asked him once and he told me that "it would be too much like working".
WAIT THE LIBRARIANS WAS CREATED WITH FATE... SOMEONE SAVE ME CASSANDRA IS A RP CHARACTER
I've been playing FATE with my friends for over a year now, so much fucking fun. We created our world, characters, factions, gods, etc. It's fucking awesome.
Woo! 'Watch It Played' shout out!
This was great... Part 2?
love every one of these tabletops
You absolutely need to turn this into a series. This was amazing.
If Tabletop ever comes back....what am i saying....WHEN Tabletop comes back, this needs a continuation!!!!
52:50 I was laughing so hard a Felicia Day's expression when they made eye contact after Will ate that card.
Decent Dice Rolling Will Wheaton Clone Detected!!!?!?!
To be fair, they are not Numbered Die, or are they Resource Die. They're just Skill Die each with around 40-60% of turning up either + or -.
T-ramZ 765 I know that shocked me because usually he sucks with dice.
John Rogers did an amazing job holy shit.
Can I just point out that almost all of the incredible phrasing is from John? Plans are for other people, pain is in the mind, there's no crying in the occult... this is all him. I fucking love John Rogers, you guys. I am a fan.
this needs it's own series... love the characters interactions.
Oh. The summoning circle thing made me get all teary-eyed! This was FANTASTIC!
Watch It Played - TableTop cross over confirmed? Please!
Theodore James - Rodney on TableTop would be great.
I would love to see Watch it Played and Shut up and Sit Down on the show!
Yes please!!
He's in the Attack on Titan game from TableTop Day and has been uploaded to this channel. And Rodney and Wil in a dice battle game would be utter hilarity because they both roll pretty poorly. If Luke comes with though, he'd wipe the table with both of them.
Theodore James yasss, Get Rodney Smith and Pep McDonald there asap
I was unsure on Fate, but that TOTALLY SOLD ME OUT!
Yep. Absolutely paused to read the newspaper text. Wasn't disappointed, haha!
John utterly captivated me with his immersion into the character. you are a RP god my friend.
John made this episode amazing.
Best. Episode. Ever.
This game will be a boon to the 3x5 industry. Fate is a job creator.
And Sharpies. Don't forget the Sharpies.
As a born and bred SE Portlander, this makes me VERY happy.
I need more FATE CORE in my life guys. This is incredibly enthralling I just didn't want it to end.
