Having a sharp pencil is pretty essential in achieving the level of detail needed for hyperrealism. Turns out there's a whole world of pencil sharpening out there and in this video I got to have some fun testing them out. I learnt some new tricks ~ maybe they'll help you on your pencil sharpening journey too.

''Hi, Im Jono, and if you're new here, I sharpen pencils''
Had me laughing in tears XDXD
It came out of nowhere 😂😂
Watching Jono discover the cordless drill / plastic sharpener combo was so pure 🥰.
Like seeing the enthusiasm of a small child opening a much anticipated gift on Christmas morning.
I have a ‘Carl’. I find that the angle is nice and small so I don’t have fat wood 😬 and I love the long sharp graphite point. I also have a sheet of 100 grit sand paper beside me when I’m embarking on a large drawing so I can quickly just rub my pencil and bring a point back or soften an edge for blending or create some graphite dust 🤩
Love love love your amazing work 🥰
Me too ✌ Cheers from Germany
I cant be the only person whos jaw dropped when Jono said he did not know how to use a mechanical sharpener. lol by the way that one was a bad example of one, try the swordfish.. very funny video though. im going to try the angle grinder and mains drill next time I sharpen. Hopefully the next video will include a Katana.
The carl angel-5 is a great sharpener, the swordfish is low quality in comparison.
@@Conda17 I use the Derwent super point , which I'm pretty sure is just an angel-5 undercover with $15 added on for the name
@@Conda17 They both work fine. When both do the job well, and both do, neither is low quality. One just costs more than it should. But I don't use either. The choices for pros is the Derwent for a long sharpener, and a Dahl for everything else.
@@jamesaritchie1 - “for pro’s” lol all the gear and no idea
@@Conda17i mean they would be the ones to listen to, they are the ones with the skillset and tools to make a living with it. Whereas youre just a pretentious rando in a youtube comment section.
I really appreciated this video, it brings more exposure to artists like me who always sharpen their pencils with a power drill to bring only the most crisp lines ❤️
I was tired of ruining my Prismacolors and I don't remember where I found out about it but I ended up with an Afmat automatic sharpener. It never breaks my pencils and the amount of lead is pretty close to your hand sharpening. Also, because it automatically stops when your pencil is sharp, it doesn't waste any of the wood and wastes a lot less of the lead. I love it. When I ordered it, the delivery was delayed and they sent a second one, so I have one upstairs and downstairs and it's such a luxury. Even my feistiest Prismacolors sharpen perfectly now, with tons of lead showing.
If this is anything like the blending video it guaranteed to be gold 😆
Jono may have a second career in comedy or infomercial re-enactments 😂😂
That blue sharpner is a table top sharpner, you need to fix it on the table so it won't wiggle. This type of sharpner uses helical blade and are very good. I barely noticed any breakage while using this type of sharpner
I bought the Derwent version of this sharpener some years ago.. It is SO Good .... ! For those who are familiar with how difficult it is to sharpen, without breaking, some brands of colored pencils.. *cough prismacolor .. cough * ... Here is my experience.. I sharpened 150 brand new prismacolor pencils .. NO BREAKS ! Then, the largest set of polychromos .. 72 pencils .. NO BREAKS .. and it brings them to a freakishly sharp point .. I LOVE IT... ! Derwent .. Manual helical sharpener .. it will change your life .. : )
@@sharonolsen6579 yep these sharpners with helical blade are life savers
@Sharon Olsen I agree. I have one and absolutely love it.
@@sharonolsen6579 - great sharpener, agreed but the largest set of polychromos is 120.
@@Conda17 LOL so it is !! That IS the one I have.. it had just been awhile.. my oldish brain just oopsed : )
You had the time of your life playing with the sharpeners there... love it how your eyes lit up like a child! Only a child at heart can be a great artist... which you are ❤
Thank you so much for this lovely video
Love my swordfish 8-12 mm sharpener. Clamps on the desk, too. Blade changes are a breeze when needed.
Thanks for the experiment ✨Really love your content 🔥
Not only have I just sat through a video about pencil sharpening, I totally enjoyed it.
🙌 😁
Yes sir, It was really helpful. I was confusing a lot in sharping my pencils whether to use a blade or sharpener, but now after watching your video my all confusion is cleared.
Thank you
Last one is out of this world 🤣
RUclips suggested me your videos, and boy, I'm glad I found you... Your energy is just so amazing! Not even mentioning how astonishing your art is, but your positivity, your passion, I mean, you just shine so bright ! Keep it up! You got a new sub from south of France! Much love to you!
I thought Jono is all so serious, turns out I'm wrong! I had to repeat the intro :'D. And the sound of sharpening pencil is so satisfying.
Sharpening pencils is one of the most frustrating aspect I experience with my drawings. Constaly the points breaking while I sharpen them and then the point getting stuck inside the sharpener etc. Very helpful video. I should get one of those best ones.
Get a tabletop sharpener with a helical blade and never worry about sharpening issues again.
The amusement on his face when he was sharpening the last pencil is priceless
My art teacher swore that the old pen knife. And elbow grease!
Was the winner x
Also loved a chicken dinner!
The best mechanical or any sharpener, to my knowledge, is Derwent mechanical sharpener. The length of the edge will shock you. The only thing it isn't very good for is very soft pastel pencils, but those are in a completely different section of drawing tools. For any kind of graphite or coloured pencils, however, it's pretty amazing. a bit pricy, but a worthwhile investment, in my opinion.
Thank you so much for your videos! Love your work and rewatch your tutorials many times.🥰
It would be cool to make a short video about when to use sharp pencils and when to use blunt ones and the angles to draw with.. i am in the middle of a family portrait and practically messing around with the pencils and always wonder if i what i'm doing is right or not..
Love your work ❤
Absolutely LOVE the drill. So cool!!!
This was wonderful!!
When I saw the title, the only thing I thought was, “if *he’s* been sharpening pencils wrong, then what the hell have I been doing?!??”
When you see your drawings it tells me you are qualified for everything! When it comes to drawing art. Love your drawings.
Man you are literally solving every artists problems through your video
Keep the good work going🏃👍
My go to for my clutch pencils is the Staedtler 502, on my wood pencils I use the Derwent super point or the Black wing sharpener (metal version).
Great! Thank you Mr. Jono 🎨❣️
Never thought I would have so much fun watching another man sharpen pencils for 12 minutes
😂 Thanks for watching, Camas!
Your work is exceptional
The only video I haven’t skipped ahead in for 6 months! 10/10! Loved it!
I have a sharpener very similar to Carl. And I use it all the time.
Made me laugh a lot. Thank you. Will definitely be using the 10 out of 10 sharpener from now on.
Thanks for watching, Jen!
Awwwn, thank you jono dry
I've learnt something once again, thank you.
The amount of sheer joy this video gave me is almost beyond words!
Thanks for watching, David!
You are really good at this
So informative and hilarious thank you Jono
the intro, unexpected
Very informative, and interesting video.. thanks jono for making this 🤗❤️
Hahaha, thanks for the demo and the giggles.
Haven't laughed so much in a while! Loved using the power tools! Very enjoyable, thank you! I love art, because you can make your own rules...stick to what works, but never be afraid to keep learning.
I think I will go pull out the angle grinder from the barn. :)
Glad you enjoyed it, Mindy!
Amazing information!
Haha, that was worth the wait! 😊
The scene with the drill was hilarious 😂 "wheres the safety goggles 🥽?'
so much fun, love the pencil sharpening techniques!
Thanks, Jim!
Thanks for sharing this Jonathan. Keep safe.☺️❤️🙏🏻
This video is awesome I draw with pencil and have experienced all sorts of issues with several different pencil sharpeners. I ended up being very impressed with with using sand paper to sharpen my pencils now, give it a try folks
I've just recently stumbled across your video's/art, which is fantastic by the way. As I'm usually focused on what you're explaining and paying attention to your demonstrations I've never really noticed that you're actually a pretty funny guy. I'm just saying because it was a refreshing realisation. Carry on, sir.
appreciate that, Sandra 🙏🙂
love these light hearted/jokey/amusing style videos, thanks Jono ^_^
Glad you enjoyed it, Belinda! 🙂
Hi Jono! I'm a 'newbie' for your Channel & just L🖤V your Art.
My Father taught me how to sharpen pencils with a knife blade, when I was just a lil' Gal of 6yrs old!😏! [I lived with a Pencil every day]. He was a precision Toolmaker' & an 'Amateur' Artist, but exceptionally gifted. I learnt a number of techniques from him; how to use a pencil correctly to it's best potential for the paper & how to portray light & shadow correctly etc. Your work is stunning!! Absolutely incredible~I feel it reveals so much of your Persona! 👁️👁️!
I have only just come across your 'Vidz' & watched many in succession already, just tonight!
Thank you for allowing me to enter your World of 'Precision of Graphite Images'😚:~I L🤍V it so much. 🙏🏻Rosie🦓{UK}
(Stay🦋Safe ALL)
Thank you so much for your support, Rosie!
Just watched you sharpen pencils and thoroughly enjoyed it lol
My whole life I thought the big whole in sharpeners is for big pencils, and the small for small??? But this makes so much sense
Definitely entertaining. More videos like this please 😁
Thanks for the feedback, Francis!
Jono, you're the best.
We want a video on how you edit your videos and also on time management. Love your drawings ❤
Great video so much I have smiled and felt more confident in my day after watching your video at 6.35 am morning 🌞🌞😁😁
I enjoy you videos Jono, have ordered an Angel 5 after seeing this. I mainly oil paint but like to do graphite /charcoal drawings at times too.
Love the topic!
Love ! Will def try to find a blue carl sharpener
I was having a bit of a stressful morning, but that video cheered me right up. Thank you! 😂
I'm so glad! Thanks for watching, Darryl!
Wow really like your content ☺️☺️☺️
Nice information pal. It would be worth the time.
Jono sr U taught me every valuable things that an art school can't teach me after paying also.
Indian ah bro?

Iconic intro once again Lol!
pocket knife (my grandfather's) and a sandpaper paddle as needed ♥
You are the best jono 🙂
What Are You Spraying After The Pencil Drawing?
Fixative
Hi jono. Fed up with broken leads I brought a Hovel. You hold it like an upside down wood plane the pencil is then drawn across the blade. Expensive but the body is solid brass and it sits in a beech or walnut holder that also collects the shavings. Blades can be replaced. Nice to hold. Satisfying to use and provides that thinking time. Had one for two years now and wouldn’t use anything else.
I think your having way too much fun with the drill and little sharpener haha! Awesome artist!
I love sharpening my pencil with a blade. It gives me more control and I find sharpening a pencil with a blade therapeutic
Brilliant entertainment. I think you rated the Carl sharpener, but in my humble opinion it needs to be approached in a different way. The squeeze part that pulls out with the two jaws that hold the pencil only wants to be pulled out by 10mm. I scratched a line across the metal bar at the top so I know where to pull it out each time. Then turn the handle to sharpen. When it is sharp, the handle should turn freely without tension. You can experiment with the distance pulled out, but if you extend it completely, you will end up losing most of the pencil because you won't know when to stop. I live in the UK and have a Derwent version (looks the same). If a lead breaks off, the thread at the base of the handle twists off and you remove the handle along with the blade to remove broken lead. The drill combo eats a massive amount of wood!
My favorite is the Derwent super point manual sharpener!
I would start my pencils in Carl and fine tune with the blade. Sending lots of love 💖 from sunny 🌞 Arizona 🌵😷
"Hi I'm Jono and if you are new here, i sharpen pencils" 😂😂😂got me laughing i had to pause the video to process it
10 out of 10 for entertainment value too 😂😂😂 Carl wiggles ahahaha!
😂 Thanks for watching!
I mostly use mechanical drafting pencils and a barrel sharpener, but wood pencils I use a Kum, which is similar to the Master two-hole you demonstrated. Also, this is one of the funniest videos I have ever seen. Great job!
I love how Jono is so excited over sharpening pencils with a drill
I am 14 yrs old and I am practicing pencil shading by watching your videos
When I'm drawing my wrist hurt so bad and l don't know what to do. Do l have to wrap it or put athletic tape or something like this?
Really enjoyed the video. Have you tried the AFMAT Long Point Pencil Sharpener for Sketching Pencils/Drawing Pencils, 25mm Super Long Tip. I like it and have not become adept at using the blade yet.
Hi Jono, I love your work. So beautiful! I am wondering if you could please discuss how you transfer your images to paper while maintaining proper dimension. Thanks so much for your time and consideration.
I sharpen pencils!! Omg!! I never laughed so hard ! Looks like someone forgot they are a world class artist as well !! I liked your sense of humour in this and how you genuinely gave your opinion about all of those sharpeners ! I'm really dying to see you in person so hopefully i would visit south Africa for sure just to see your works for real to believe thier beauty . Love you jono and your works !😍 Still in love with the print of August ❤️ and waiting for more to decorate my walls for sure!
Thanks, Prachi! Glad you enjoyed the video 🙏
@@JonoDry The pleasure's mine 😊❤️
I use a belt sander to sharpen soft charcoal pencils and it makes them pointy without breaking
My heart breaks everytime my charcoal or 8B pencils break while sharpening them.
Very entertaining and of course informative, an always handy drill is the way.
Woah I didn't know!! I have been watching your videos and your art is so AMAZING ITS SO CRAZY. I know practice makes perfect, but you also have AMAZING SKILLL!!
Thank you so much 😀
@@JonoDry Omg I didn't exspect you to reply XD. Your soo welcome! Let me know if you ever do a art poll because I have some ideas about stuff lol. Me and my dad both love to draw, though I go a lot futher than him, when he showed me that video when your drew that eye...I lost it that was sooo coool!! I call myself a detail freak when it comes to still/non animated pieces I make but man your so much better!! Keep it up!!
after I saw Your video, I purchased the Carl Angel-5. i think it is the best sharpener i ever had.
So funny. The Mechanical Sharpener saves so much time. Definitely try out the Derwent Super Point, you get quite a close finish to standard artist knife/ blade🙂
Derwent sharpener is similar to the Carl and is the one I use. Kum two hole and a Kum colored pencil sharpeners I use while out and about. Looking for a sharpener for my big watercolor pencils. For those I use knife and sandpaper.
Jono saying “werk it gurl” is all I needed in life
😂🙈👌
😂🙈
Out of all the mechanical sharpeners I've used, the best has been a cheep Tiger kids one i bought from Tesco believe it or not. You can't beata good old blade and a long point hand sharpener.
Best video I have ever seen on RUclips!!!! Also I am a teacher and have never considered using a drill- you will not believe how many hours you have saved me- thank you!!!
I must get one of those drills. So funny.
Amazing
Okay but the way he drilled his pencil blunt was hilarious. I was watching this with coffee in hand and boy it was a accident. But anyways jono being jono is so not dry and bare. Bet he could be a comedian
Please make a video telling us about the better light to draw at night. Love your channel and your artwork.
Fantastic 💝 keep it up
LOL!!! Love your humor! 😁
Hola Jono, buen dia desde Venezuela .. siempre veo tu contenido y siempre encantada con tu propuesta artistica.
