75th Anniversary Berlin Airlift Ceremony

We continue to honor the 75th anniversary of the Berlin Airlift. Members of our Embassy team and Ambassador Michaelis attended a ceremony at the Air Force Memorial. From June 1948 to September 1949, the Berlin Airlift gave tons of supplies - and tons of hope - to the blockaded people of Berlin.
Just three years after the war, the Berlin Airlift had forged heartfelt people-to-people bonds, turning former enemies into allies. Coinciding with the founding of the Federal Republic of Germany (which also celebrates an anniversary this year!), the airlift marked a turning point in history that has shaped the bonds between our two countries through today.
As Ambassador Michaelis wrote: “In 1948, the US decided not to abandon the people of Berlin, to help the city survive. We remain grateful. Now we stand together as democracies to face the challenges of our times.”
