Today, the most important developments come from the Pokrovsk direction.
Recently, Russians have made significant progress here, making large advancements to the west toward Pokrovsk and to the south toward Kurakhove. Meanwhile, Ukrainians face significant obstacles to control and stabilize the situation.
The main Russian goal here is to take control of the city of Pokrovsk and cut off the T0504 highway supplying Ukrainian forces at Toretsk and Chasiv-Yar. To take Pokrovsk and Myrnohrad, which had a total pre-war population of about one hundred thousand people, Russians must first break through the Selydove-Novohrodivka-Hrodivka defensive line consisting of the three Ukrainian towns, respectively.
As you remember, Russians initially broke through Ukrainian lines at Prohres, leveraging their breakthrough to move deeper into Ukrainian territory along the railway line. After Russians took control over Zhelanne, they threatened the encirclement of Ukrainian forces in the fields on the eastern bank of the Vovcha River, causing Ukrainians to withdraw from this area preemptively. Hereafter, Russians started launching assaults on two towns of the Ukrainian defense line, Hrodivka and Novohrodivka. Simultaneously, Russians started moving further south to Karlivka to fully secure their control over the Vovcha River and the Karlivka reservoirs. After 6 to 12 days of heavy Russian assaults, Russians were able to take both Novohrodivka and Karlivka. With these victories, Russians secured complete control over the Karlivka reservoirs and broke through an important Ukrainian stronghold in the center of the defensive line.
Russians were able to accomplish these relatively large successes because they had moved a vast number of reserves to the region. One month ago, Russians had concentrated approximately 40 to 50 thousand soldiers in this direction, compared to only 12 thousand Ukrainians. Importantly, current Russian numbers are likely much higher, as Russians have halted many other offensive efforts to strengthen their push toward Pokrovsk, redeploying a large number of reserves here. A prominent Ukrainian military analyst even noted that Russians have now deployed more reserves to the Pokrovsk direction than they had during the highest intensity of fighting for Bakhmut. However, this has not come without a cost for Russian forces. Geolocated footage shows how Ukrainians defeated several waves of Russian mechanized assaults, destroying 12 armored vehicles and nearly 100 Russian soldiers in only one day, at not even the most intense part of the Pokrovsk front.
If you want to get access to the original uncensored combat footage, you can find it on our Telegram channel by using the link in the description.
As both Russian and Ukrainian sources report that Russians are launching such attacks with up to 200 infantry with armored support at a time, it is clear that Russian losses have skyrocketed. The Institute for the Study of War and even Russian whistleblowers in contact with Ukrainian resistance groups report that Russian forces are suffering extraordinary losses in their increased effort to take Pokrovsk.
A prominent Ukrainian military correspondent noted the intensity of fighting from the eyes of the Ukrainian 11th motorized infantry battalion that had defended Karlivka. The fighters of the battalion stated that Russians launched full-frontal assaults on the settlement with around 250 soldiers and armored vehicle support. They also came under daily heavy artillery barrages, with Russians firing between 200 and 500 artillery shells, 200 drone-dropped grenades, and dozens of FPV kamikaze strikes a day. The battalion was able to fight off the Russian attacks for days, but as Russians closed in from the north, Ukrainian heavy artillery was forced to withdraw, leaving the battalion with little to no artillery support. After six days of intense fighting, ammunition stockpiles and supplies running low, losses mounting, and Russians surrounding the settlement from two sides, the battalion was forced to withdraw.
This is where a big Ukrainian issue at Pokrovsk became apparent, as Ukrainian commanders in charge of the defense in this direction decided to sack the 11th battalion commander, blaming him for the fall of Karlivka, whereafter the battalion soldiers opened up about the reality of the situation. Generally, Ukrainians in the Pokrovsk direction suffer...

Western media quoting HoI4 experts constantly forget that Ukraine use defense in depth. Yes. You can concentrate large number of people and hold the line. But then attacking side would bomb them hard, causing massive casualties. Ukraine instead use modern defensive doctrines, making defenses from small MG and ATGM nests. What can deal massive casualties to meat waves, while suffering relatively low losses if destroyed. This mean that you have far less man on the ground and if enemy push hard enough, he would break in. But with massive casualties what are the goal. Meanwhile you build numerous more defensive lines behind, trading land for the blood. Until approaching side break. That is how Soviets defeated Germans during WW2 (when they were competent). It unfortunately don't look hot in dumb press. So hot take Russian propaganda about "Ukraine running low from few years" is quoted instead. Anyway. We should not read much into Pokrovsk, without the exact context. And you bring good reasons why Kursk maneuver was good idea.

Really? So when they did the same in Bakhmut and Avdiivka they should have just fled instead and not stay there to fight? The fact of the matter is, Kursk is now additional Ukraine territory that has to be manned and defended, which will take more Ukraine troops eventually, weakening the front elsewhere.

    • @EcnalKcin
      @EcnalKcin 10 дней назад +3

@@CellGames2006 That is not how that works. The Ukrainians are keeping their supply lines short in Kursk, and are taking favorable defensive positions. They are simply moving their forward defensive line from inside Ukraine to inside Russia. It may actually cost them less manpower than defending the current border, as they get more options for defensive positions, and can work to decrease the length of their defensive line. It also forces Russia to build a strong defense where they had a weak one before, to stop Ukraine from taking more ground. Not to mention Ukraine's old border defensive line is still there, giving Ukraine a defense in depth. If Ukraine was doing what Russia is doing, and pushing deep into enemy territory, it could be a problem, but they are being quite conservative, while keeping the threat of a sudden push available if Russia doesn't sends enough men and equipment to stop one.

Bakhmut and Andivika were heavily fortified positions, with the latter being heavily battle tested. Holding firm in those positions for ad long as possible was the best decision, because the Russians lost tems of thousands of men and hundreds of tanks, IFVs, and artillery pieces taking both sites (hundreds in total not each, just to be clear), far far less than what Ukraine lost In the defence.
And of course, when defense in both those places became untenable, Ukraine did withdraw to new defensive positions, same as in the current spots. They might have defened bakhmut for longer than other positions, but the same strategy was employed.
And attacking Kursk, in addition to forcing Russia to redeploy thousands of troops and shifting the media narrative significantly in favour of Ukraine, plus putting Ukraine in a better negotiating position for any ceasefire or peace deal that may come about in the near future, so that was definitely a good idea, even if theoretically it did cause Ukraine to have to withdraw from some positions sooner than they otherwise would have, not that that is very likely given the aforementioned redeploying of troops it forced out of Russia.

I think the key point here is that Ukraine refused to fight ONLY by terms that Russia set i.e. to engage in a frontal battle of overwhelming force, where Russia's numerical advantage wins. While Russia HAS gained SOME territory, it is a relatively small area, and it should be obvious, that they cannot sustain the extremely high costs indefinitely. Meanwhile the massive Russian propaganda effort, itself, shows that the Kursk offensive WAS effective in creating a major dilemma for Russia, as they try very hard, to shift the narrative to obscure this. Ukrainian goal was NOT (as Russia claims) to divert ALL of Russia's resources to Kursk, but to spread them as thinly as possible. In this, they are clearly succeeding.

This seems quite positive for the Russian terrorist state but every Russian offensive loses steam relatively quickly because they routinely lose outrageous numbers of troops and equipment and then the offensive effort stalls. Think about the most recent Kharkiv offense in the spring and early summer, the exact same progress occurred and ended just as fast as it began because Russian high command never learned from their easily avoidable meat wave mistakes. Superior Russian numbers aren't as beneficial as they claim they are when every offensive endeavor is simply a meat wave assault.

The UA has outstanding and experienced lower ranked officers who have demonstrated their understanding of the modern battlefield, maneuver warfare, their strengths and limitations, and how to exploit that same Soviet attritional doctrine weakness the Russians are trapped in.

In the west we were always taught 3:1 ratio in assault. In Soviet times doctrine was 8 or 10:1 in assault. Nothing has changed but the cost with modern weapons is far greater. Ukraine will win even if they lose because the Russian federation is a dead man walking. Its just a shame that so many Ukrainians are suffering in the meantime.

They have overextended, they have failed to meet any of their goals, they have expended around three quarters of a million soldiers and almost a trillion dollars in military equipment, their ill advised invasion has resulted in the strengthening of Nato, and a new concentration by the west on military rearmament, their economy is in shambles, their only productive industry (petroleum) has been subjected to catastrophic damage which is ongoing, their 'allies' are bleeding them white for rather minimal assistance, and the Ukrainians are fighting harder than ever, are stronger than ever, and can afford to keep bleeding Russia for every square foot of mud for another hundred years but Russia won't last even 12 months more.

My guess, is that Ukraine is deliberately drawing them in to Pokrovsk which is likely HEAVILY fortified and having any new troops not being sent to Kursk or other areas, diverted to it. I would have said that this would be a better place for the Challenger Tanks they’ve received from Britain, as they are very good at defensive actions, rather than Kursk which is an offensive one, but then again, they have far fewer Challenger Tanks than they do others, so Leopards, Abram’s and their old Soviet stuff are probably the better decision, given the numbers their facing.
My prediction for what will happen should the Russians actually reach Pokrovsk, is they find a fortress, built to withstand wave after wave of attacks, and they’ll be getting to it at the WORST time, when the ground will be soggy from the autumn rains, which will delay further assaults, buying Ukraine more time to get all its pieces into position. Then, once the ground hardens from the cold of winter, Russia will recommence offensive operations, and right as this happens, Ukraine will launch its own offensive, at the back line of the salient.
Best spot would be that small town by the reservoirs, as those will protect the Ukrainians right flank from the bulk of Russian forces, and run almost straight north, halfway into the salient. A simultaneous attack from the north will then cut the Russian forces in front of Pokrovsk off, saving the city and dooming what I can only imagine are several divisions worth of Russian troops, behind enemy lines.
If this is what Ukraine is cooking up, it will be a MASTERSTROKE, and put an end to further Russian offensives in the region.

It's hard to counter mass attacks unless sufficient firepower can be quickly massed to break them up and inflict extreme losses. That's where a flexible command and control system comes in which apparently is a problem here. The defending troops in the trenches can only do so much, particularly as they are usually under fire themselves, without sufficient firepower support they will inevitably be overwhelmed by a 200 plus support attack. I agree it is a mistake for Ukraine to deploy elite maneuver formations into static defensive positions. Russia simply masses arty, air and rocket fires against the static positions, attritting Ukrainian maneuver troops. Given the relatively imprecise nature of Russia arty and even glide bombs, the more troops Ukraine puts into a small area, the higher the casualties for Ukraine. The trade off is a thinly held line can be broken by repeated, casualty heavy Russian assaults that trade casualties for territory.
