Actually, she did go to acting school in New York City right after she and her mother left England. Still, such raw talent! I highly recommend reading her authorized biography "Balancing Act."
and she trained at the renowned webber Douglas acting school in London before she was evacuated to the US. her mother was an actress and she dreamed or being one from an early age, she also put on plays as a kid for family entertainment. she was always a star in the making.
I was going to write she is still alive- but NO- she just passed away- she was AMAZING. I think she had more work under her belt than any other actor alive today. Although Donald Sutherland comes close now. So sad- she could do anything.
Angela Landsbury was fantastic in this movie. She was such a versatile actress, on stage and on screen. Her performance as the manipulative mother in the 1962 film 'The Manchurian Candiate' was outstanding. A genuinely lovely lady too. RIP Angela
You can clearly tell from this first and subsequent onscreen performances that Ms. Lansbury oozed confidence. It was also present in every interview she gave.
As far as Murder She Wrote and Columbo, there will never be as great and as well constructed writing and production in mystery shows ever again, I can tell you that. And I am going go back and watch all of her movies minus the Broadway productions but yet she has such a massive career I hardly know where to begin. Rest In Peace Dame Angela Lansbury ❤️❤️❤️🙏🏽💯🥲
She was 19 yrs old and had no acting experience and pulled this off. Angela was without doubt one of the most talented and amazing actors ever. Her performance in "The Manchurian Candidate" was breathtaking.
@@billyriedel6449 She was 17, employed at a department store, she went to MGM studios to audition for Dorian Gray and was rushed into the office for this film with her mother- because she was a minor. She also was nominated for an Oscar for this, her first role. There are plenty of interviews where she speaks of having zero experience, zero previous talent, and walking onto that set.
She was only 18 when she did this movie. Legend. And to think she'd go from playing a flirtatious and insolent housemaid to playing our beloved matronly Mrs. Potts decades later.
Fun Hollywood history story! (Excerpt from a 1997 interview with director Lewis Allen) “Do you know who the lady in the shop is? Moyna Macgill, the mother of Angela Lansbury. Moyna was a very famous English actress, and when the war came along, she came out to Hollywood with her two sons and her daughter, Angela. I later gave Angela a part in a picture because Moyna said, "Oh, I wish you'd give her a job." I was doing Our Hearts Were Young and Gay [1944], and so I said, "Send her in," and I hired Angela to play in Our Hearts Were Young and Gay. About three days later, here the picture started, George Cukor called me, and he "Have you just hired a girl called Angela Lansbury?" I said. "We haven't started yet, but she's going to be working for me, yes, George. He said, "Well, we're making tests for Gaslight, and I'm testing her she's any good, will you let her go?" The following day be called me and said, "I've just looked at the test, and it's very ged. We want to hire her, but you've got to let her go." So I let her go, and you know the rest she got an Oscar nomination for that, and that was the beginning of her career.”
"Moyna Macgill (born Charlotte Lillian McIldowie; 10 December 1895 - 25 November 1975) was an Irish actress from Belfast..." "Dame Angela Brigid Lansbury DBE (16 October 1925 - 11 October 2022) was an Irish-British[1] and American actress..." IRISH. IRISH. IRISH.
@@zyxw2024 True she might’ve been born in Ireland. But her work then was done in the British scene making her British actress :-) but yes she was Irish.
From the golden days of Hollywood. They are almost all gone now. While I was growing up they would appear on Carson because they were stars but Johnny is gone and so are most of his guests.
To think she was 17 years old and making these scenes where she played character that was nothing like the young naive girl that she was and just hit it out of the park. The Academy owes her 2 Oscars. for this and the Manchurian Candidate.
This and "The Picture of Dorian Gray" -- two classic films about narcissism produced long before the subject was talked about. Way ahead of their time, the writers, actors and crew. Watch the late Mrs. Lansbury play Sibyl Vane in "Dorian Gray."
Yes but this was very much Ingrid Bergman's picture. A year later, however. in THE PICTURE OF DORIAN GRAY with Hurd Hatfield (who reunited with her on an episode of MURDER, SHE WROTE years later) HERS is the female character we remember. Not Donna Reed's.
Some RUclipsr weirdo named Jeremy Kaplowitz said that Angela Lansbury wasn’t in this movie at all. He was probably gaslighting or trolling the audience.
It's bonkers to think that she had no formal acting training at this point, she was just a naturally magnetic presence, and flew on to legend status.

Angela Lansbury was very pretty and a phenomenal actress. RIP Angela. 😟🥺😢😔

a wonderful, unique, stunning actor. a lovely woman. rest in peace, beautiful dreamer.
I've watched this about ten times at least. She is brilliant.
Yo! I ❤ Angela Lansbury!!!!!
Today’s her 97th Birthday! Hip Hip Hooray!
Discovered her in The Picture of Dorian Grey. I was just a kid, I thought she looked like an angel. So sweet and beautiful!
RIP. She was a great actress.
A-1 work from the first frame of her career to the last- R.I.P. to a legendary talent.
We're all gonna miss you mrs.potts
Two of my favs. Ingrid Bergman and Angela Lansbury
RIP. Thank you for posting this. I was good to see this at this moment when I learned of her death.

Angela was actually 17 and had studied in drama school
In IMDB they said she was 17; however, they also say she was born in 1925, which would have made her 19.
I read that she was 17 as well, but I know not about any acting experience 🤔
With that said, great movie, beautiful, talented actress. RIP

So young and naturally talented without any training. Working with experienced acting Stars. Amazing! RIP Miss Lansbury!
She was so good in this! We just watched this again last month.
My favourite Angela Lansbury film has to be The Court Jester and Bedknobs and Broomsticks❤️
She was so young and beautiful here
Man, that's what I thought. She was still good-looking as an older lady, but not like in that scene.
Many thanks... It reminds me When she played McGill role in murder she wrote 🙏🙏🙏🙏❤❤
Always the best! I loved her.
RIP Angela Lansbury
Angela was a 17 year old when she started filming Gaslight. The studio put off any scenes where she smoked until she turned 18!
And her last role was a cameo in Glass Onion playing Among Us with Daniel Craig in the bathtub. What a way to go out.
I placed a new video where you see Angela Lansbury in her final cameo appearance
@@stewwatch6305 thank you for letting me know I’ll check it out.

@Chayil 74 They couldn't just quit and move to something less abusive?
The four main cast members were all European, Boyer, Bergmann, Lansbury & Whitty.
Angela Lansbury was an amazing woman.
Ladies and gentlemen a true star is born in this scene
thank you !
Bit of a revelation seeing a young AL being sassy and flirty.
So cute
God rest her soul.
Fun fact: the play this is based on is the origin of the word 'gaslight'.

Nanny Mcphee...

This was not her film acting debut. She played Elizabeth Taylor’s older sister in National Velvet (1944) prior to this role.
Maybe "GL" was released first? If that's when the public saw her first, then- I know it's a matter of semantics- wouldn't that be her debut?
_Gaslight_ was released on May 4, 1944, and _National Velvet_ seven months later on December 14.
@@musicaltheatergeek79 Thanks, I'd consider that the answer.
