Dom I worked with an engineer in the 60s re-metaling some bearings to adjust the backlash on a 1930s machine. He tought me to have a large spanner ready and if there was a leek touch the leaking babbit with the cold spanner to stop the flow. It worked for us.
Glad to see that the Sainbury's pan is holding up well. More amazed at how quickly Geoff can tell the difference from using the new babit vs the old one, of course years of experience help 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Having Geoff's expertise and no BS opinions to guide you and value them in your development of the new Ranalahs has been such a pleasure to witness. He was genuinely impressed after the refurb. You can see and HEAR the quality! 👌👍
Brilliant video Dom, I've been watching since the beginning of the Ranalah project. This was so much fun to see the bunch of you all together, and the results at the end speak for themselves. It makes this old timer want to take up metal work. Keep it up, thanks for the ride!
Great video Dom and honest Jon looked like a right laugh was had by all congratulations on the upgrade am pleased for you that the Ranalah project is going from strength to strength love the channel and what you do ♥️👍
Stonehenge right off the bat, How Cool! Watching you guys wrestle that Ranalah across the floor, it almost looked like you were working against each other at times. Great job on the rebuild!
A great day at the office so to speak Dom' ! Your prophesy proved correct !😅😅 But the standout for me was your total commitment to getting the Ranalah working to perfection what ever it took ! Incidently, l was at a show in Teignmouth today and there was a'51 beetle on show . It was ....how can l put it ? ......full of patina but your Mum's car was leaps and bounds ahead . Thanks Dom .
What a great video, Geoff Moss I think you undersold him Dom, he is probably the best wheeler alive today, I've seen other video's of his work building Lotus 11's and he gas welds his panels together with no filler rods, astoundingly talented.......but those with a rolly hanging out their mouths usual are.
Geoff is a very difficult man to impress, as you well know, and if he says it's a f#cking lovely bit of kit then you know you've done something right 👌
Hi Dom, I came across a BBC2 prog last night, Coronation Tailors - Fit For a King, in which they visited a company (Firmin House) in Birmingham who produce armour and helmets for the Horseguards using an English Wheel. Not a patch on your Ranalah! Just thought I'd mention it. It's towards the end. Cheers.
Well done Dom and John. Great job. If you get a chance to catch it, there was a programme on BBC2 last Wednesday about the uniforms for the coronation, during which they showed how they make the helmets for the Lifeguards using a machine similar to your Ranalahs.
Similar machine other than the fact that it needs both arms and a leg to use it. The chap making the helmets has been doing so for 45 years and made it look so easy, just like Geoff does. That's what a lifetimes experience is all about.
Hi Dom, love the videos. Could you do another video on signwriting please? Especially showing the different sized brushes and what they are used for and which types you would recommend. I'm just starting signwriting and have found your videos very useful in getting started.
Very nice. It's impressive that you can do that away from the shop. I wonder if it would make any sense to refurbish old machines by only reusing the main casting. It would have to have a suitable plate added attesting to its new status, of course.
Hi Dom, just wondering if you watched BBC TV last Wednesday, and the Patrick Grant programme about the company that made (and makes) all the uniforms for the Coronation. On the programme there was a man using a wheeling machine to make the helmets for the Household Cavalry, I could not see a name on the machine, but the man doing the wheeling was magnificent, and it was wonderful to see. Thought you might like to see it - possibly on iPlayer. Great video again, thanks.
Seeing you struggle with getting this machine in and out, one of your next projects needs to be a Ranalagh trolley, to move them around! (And if it incorporates a hoist, to tip it over, even better!) Also, has anyone yet come forward asking for a refurb of their original machine?
Where would Ranelagh have got their metal from? Probably Fry's Metals just down the road at Tandem Works, Colliers Wood. Fry's also provided Diecasting work so could make finished product or billets of metal elements or compounds as required. Most of the metal came from smelting scrap metal including aircraft.
Dom why haven't you built a tilt cart for moving the Great Beasts, one man moving safely vw starter motor for forward and reverse base it on a barrel tilt dolly.
Just adding up the expertise of the three of you in this video! Lotus 11!? I saw a video a month ago where a fella over here in the USA has an 11 that was actually owned/raced by Colin Chapman.
Have you tried removing the new formula babbit after an install? I wonder if repairability was another motivation for using the stuff with a lower melting point.
Yes I’ve tried that in the workshop before setting Geoffs on another machine, melts out no problem! Might higher melting temperature but it’s no problem
Hi Dom, there was a TV programme on last Wednesday about coranation uniforms with a guy using a strange English wheel to make guardsman helmets, worth a watch if you missed it!
The idea of using babbitt is actually Really clever, a brass bush would require some massive machining to the casting to line everything up, this way allows for any movement in the casting
@@DominicChineas Dom, you need a professional way to move the Ranalah's about on sight. Clearly, the weight and high centre of gravity present problems. My first thoughts are something based upon the sack-barrow with a broad wheel base and direct fixing to the tool. It needs to be collapsible to be carried on the delivery vehicle. I know you've got the trolley crane for the workshop but something similar is needed at the customer site. Love the Ranalah's, J

Everyone's obvious enthusiasm is what makes this great to watch..
I have thoroughly enjoyed watching the Ranalah project from the beginning. Can't wait to see Dominic bring back (well, at least own) the whole set!
If ever they make a film of Geoff’s life, it has to be Larry Lamb that plays him 😂
Thanks Dom perfect in everyway. I bought your book from Amazon a excellent publication thanks Dom again.

Tin and copper increase the hardness but the tin is the primary bearing material, hard and slippery.
That is some endosment of the quality of the new kit Dom, use it in all the adverts

Babbit is a mixture of lead tin and copper
Did you soot the spindle first to stop adhesion?
No because we want all the adhesion we can get!
The spindles don’t move in the babbitt, they are fixed and the wheels have bearings
if you look in old machinests books, they used a variety of grades of babbit
Yeah we have looked into these and learnt alot, let’s hope the new blend is a winner
