Everyone should start the declutter process particularly parents. It's not fair to leave all your stuff for your kids to clear up.

I used to have a big trashcan in the garage, with a lid. I would put a bag and anything somebody didn't want, they could drop it in there. Every month, when I went grocery shopping, I would drop it off on the way there. It really helps!

I’m clearing out my mums house now. She was a hoarder, she’s still alive but is living in a care home. I can go on for about 30 minuters at the time, I’m a hoarder as well but with some common sense but the decision process is soooo fatiguing. So I use extremely much time and energy on doing something she should have done but couldn’t.

Concerning the orange organization bins, if you wanted you could trade out some old bins you’re currently using and replace them with the cute orange ones, essentially “upgrading” your organization space. You’d still be getting rid of the same amount of bins, you’d just be keeping ones you like more!

I've already done "Swedish Death Cleaning". I've given anything of value to my children already. There are a few things that I still have that my kids have said they wanted. But when I go to the Other Side of Glory, I told my kids to either have a huge garage sale, or have a charity come and load it all up and take it all away!
I also go through my cabinets, drawers and closets on the regular and declutter. I got my house as "bare bones minimum' as I can!

You are absolutely wise to start dealing with your parents' items early and often! My parents are in their 80s. Mom has dementia. She won't let me touch anything in their hoarded house. I tried to talk them into downsizing years ago; that did NOT happen. Meanwhile, when my dad passes I very much worry it will trigger me to hoard his belongings because I reacted similarly to my grandma's death when I was a teenager. I can hear in your voice you don't even want to think about that, but starting while everyone is still around is way better than sorting during the rawest stages of grief. More power to you.

    • @Siures

Have you recently followed Chickabiddies' journey on YT? Her mom passed away, leaving her with a hoarded house to sort out. She herself is not a hoarder, but she has a lot of love for her mum, and wanted to dispose of her stuff respectfully. She went through the hoard and all the emotional ties, it's very interesting and it makes you think about our relation to stuff and what we leave behind.

Knowing how hard that inner work is, watching the hoaders show really frustrates me. Do people think those hoarders change in just few days??? How traumatic it must be for them! You show what real healing and growth look like. I am so glad you have started this decluttering journey when you did and, that is so good that now you can also work on things from your parent's house. You are doing so much favor to your family❤ Have a great weekend!!

    Thank you for sharing!
Due to health issues my parents (age 87 and 84) decided to move to a retirement home this year.
They used to live in a house with a garden and a basement for 30 years and they had a lot of stuff, but they managed to clear it out and reduce their belongings to the bare minimum in two months. I am so proud of them and so thankful!
It was a lot of work for all of us, it was physically and emotionally challenging, but we succeeded, some kitchen stuff and furniture went to younger family members, friends and neighbors, but most of it was donated to charity.
I think it is really better and easier to do this together instead of burden someone else to do this after your death.
I am so inspired and motivated now, that I have decided not to wait until I am 80 but to start right now in my sixties. I have no kids, so I have to do it on my own and I am free to decide what to do with my belongings. I think it makes much sense to aim for an unburdened life especially when you are getting older and daily tasks become more challenging.
I started to konmari my shoes, all shoes with heels (10 pairs, some worn only once or twice) go to charity next week. I had an emotional attachment to them, but finally I can let them go! 😀

I help my parents to declutter all the time. They are not good at starting it, but they are OK with letting go of stuff. They have lived in the same house for ca 45 years, and they have a big garage as well. 😅 I used to try to help my aunt with decluttering, but she didn't want to let anything go,so it was harder. She died suddenly this May, and my cousins spent the whole summer going through her house. She had a lot of everything and a great ability to fit a lot in wardrobes etc. 😅❤ I got some of her clothes,I wanted to have some memories....but after a month, I tried on the clothes again and donated everything except a jacket. I have so many fond memories, I don't need the clothes. She was a lot like you, extremely caring, loved cute thing, Christmas, giving presents 🎁 💖 and host family gatherings. I will continue with my own and my parents decluttering and organizing. I'm happy every time some space in my home is easier to maintain. Thank you for all the inspiration! 🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤

You should really let your parents go through their own stuff and get rid of it what they want and not even add you in the equation. If they want to get rid of it let them and then the stuff that actually means something will be what you will only have to go through in the end. If they made the decision to let it go then there should be no reason you need to go through as well. Less stress or having to make a decision on something that has already been decided to let go of. Don’t let someone else’s stuff occupy your mind.

Wow that is a HUGE tossy tossy pile! Sentimental is difficult. The Declutter Hub podcast in UK does a similar emotion based approach to decluttering. They do not believe in one size fits all so they have a great variety of guests for different things. 3 pertain to the eventual decluttering for mom and dad. Episode 302 guest Jo Jacob is actually geared towards the older person downsizing. Most of her clients are retired going from a big house into a small apartment in a retirement community. Episode 284 is called Exploring grief and clutter. This was extremely interesting. I lost my mom young it really helped me. The last is just good for everyone Episode 299 the Importance of Patience, it is important to be patient with ourselves!

My Dad didn't give away his things before he passed, but he did talk about them so I knew their stories and what was important to him. When he passed, I asked Mom if I could have certain items. Mom gave me many things as the years went by and when she did she would tell me about the item, how she got it or who gave it and when she used it. Some of her jewelry she gave to me with a note explaining the particulars. I still have those notes with each of the pieces.
I think it would be a good idea to talk about the items with your parents, rather than your mom just dropping them off. Then you can also talk about your memories of the times those items were used. It might help you let go of the things easier. Also, after you talk, take a picture of your parent(s) with the items. That way you can still trigger those memories even though the item has moved on.

You and your parents should do the gentle art of death cleaning, if she wants to get rid of stuff now then that’s great, you all can tackle it together. That way it’s not overwhelming when they are gone.

You don’t need to confirm everything with your kids. As a parent, you can make some logical decisions on your own.

She does this for a reason. So her sons practice letting go and to give them autonomy over their things.

@@orysyaf8337 I understand that. But it doesn’t have to be everything. Clothes that don’t fit, bicycle helmets outgrown. That’s just over the top.

Love it! Good ideas to start going thru Mom's stuff....I'm a mom trying to get numbers of things gone and sorted, too. Have gone thru loads of old business paperwork and files to get that down to only what I have to keep. Also household stuff that isn't useful anymore or doesn't look good or I don't need...The hard part about that stuff is how you actually get it gone.

I hope you help your mum declutter as much as possible bit by bit, whilst she is still with you, because you don’t want to have gone through all this hard work over the last few years to empty out your basement; only to refill it with all your mum’s stuff. I know you have talked about Swedish Death Cleaning before, so you will already know how difficult it’s going to be for you if you have to deal with everything in one go.

They won't remember those items they have been in boxes/bins for how long I might be wrong but I would toss without asking them. Once the garage is done start doing their home downsizing and donation?

The traditional saying to describe an assorted mix of items is usually “ hodgepodge “. I think you mixed up the word with the crafting glue “Mod Podge”. However I knew exactly what you meant. 😂😂😂.

My mom is a full blown hoarder - the bad kind. Animals, animal waste in the house, etc. She'll get rid of a bunch of stuff, then turn around and fill it again. Not looking forward to that mess.
I think you'll see a HUGE jump in the basement when you declutter your empty bins. Can I gently suggest that you pick a type and size that you want to keep, match up all the lids and get rid of the rest? I don't think you'll ever need them.
I have a theory about the B's. (baskets, bags, bins) - The more you have, the more stuff you keep in them. I have one laundry basket for this reason. For years I had no laundry baskets because stuff would just sit in the basket.
No pressure, something for you to consider when you're ready.

Or at least put them to use by switching them out with those cardboard boxes so anything that does remain, doesn't end up ruined.
