This is the problem with England. Participation in the letter stages is classed as a success where the successful countries the objectives is to win the tournament losing is not an option
We played really well in the previous 3 tournaments? 😂 in 2018 we lost to Belgium in the group, beat Colombia on penalties, beat Sweden and then lost to Croatia in the semis. In 2020 I agree we played well and that was definitely our best tournament under southgate but we still didn’t beat anyone good other than Germany. Then the last World Cup we beat no one good and went out to yet another team that was as good as us by playing crap football, drawing to the USA in the group also. The home tournament in 2021 was the only time where we looked very good as a team in all areas of the pitch but we still had lucky draws. Other than that we’ve been very poor in all other tournaments including this one.
Between 2018 and 2022 England played far better than in 2024. Also between those years they played much better than England did under Fabio Capello and Roy Hodgson.
One word, delusional
Bravo! You have described yourself and your whole nation 👏
Such a good point: "the top managers are in the champions league". Luis de la Fuente is the Spanish Southgate - came up through the ranks of Spain's youth teams, to U21s, and then senior squad.
yes its a great point, it really is largely the players and I dont think the global view and pressure of PL helps. Im not convinced about Klopp, worth a go though but domestic fotball is so much different to international
This is insane and pathetic from Carragher, we’ve looked absolutely shambolic this whole tournament, sure, it would’ve been nice to shithouse the trophy but that’s what it would’ve been, a shithouse, at no point did we ever look good in ANY of our games, we all knew our luck would run out eventually, it just sucks that they waited until the final game of the tournament to get found out. Now I will give Southgate credit where it’s due, he has transformed the atmosphere around the England team, removed the fear-factor around the England shirt, and reconnected the fans with the team, he’s clearly a nice guy, but he has a ceiling, and that ceiling is below what’s needed to win a trophy, I was right about him 4 years ago when I made up my mind that he wasn’t good enough to win any trophies with England, and, unfortunately I’m proven right once more. Southgate’s done his job, so now it’ll be MUCH easier for the next manager, who only has to worry about implementing a more modern and specific style of play.
"Shithouse the trophy!" My new, favourite phrase. Poetry!

You are aware he said this year England didn't play well in most of their matches. When he talked about England playing better he was referring to the previous tournaments. That would be more accurate, given that this year England were scraping past on 1-0 or 2-1 wins or on penalties.
You must be deluded if you want Southgate to stay on.

Caragher is actually the only sane one amongst you lot. You have it drilled into your head that England is this footballing powerhouse. You aren't! Your players are smack bang average , it is a miracle that Southgate has gotten that team as far as he did. I actually hope Gareth Southgate resigns. As a manager I would not want to work for a country with fans like yourself.
Why don't you just praise your coach and team for the success that they had and make them feel good about themselves. This toxic culture of yours is why you as a country have had no success for 55 years!
England fans were calling for Southgate to be the next king of England the other day 👑🇬🇧
Carragher must have CTE
We already wasted the last 2 tournaments, i found it quite clear to see that Southgate wasn’t good enough tactically to win a trophy after the euro 21. Easy draws kidding people into thinking that we’re doing well to get far in tournaments. Thanks Gareth you’ve done a good job in progressing the team to a better state but it’s time for an attacking tactical coach and staff
It makes me laugh people going on about tactics. People are obsessed with it in terms of Southgate. It’s actually less of a factor at international level, and whilst many may not like the style his tactics produce they can’t say he’s not good tactically. No one who knows what they’re talking about can look at that first half and say it wasn’t good tactically. England completely nullified Spain, who had to resort to aimless ball into the box.
Lapse in concentration on 47 minutes was the killer blow, but wasn’t tactically related. It was a lapse from the defence.
If he stays you will ALWAYS get the same results
Lazy and lucky wins and then lose any big game.
He doesnt learn. 🤦♂️
Most of the England squad would get in every other squad in the Euros. Yet we were outplayed in 13 of the 14 halves of the tournament. Recently we have also lost 4-1 at home to Hungary and 1-0 to ICELAND. The players are there they need a better system.

Changes from the bench? Why didn’t these players start…Coke Palmer, Trent, Oli Watkins, Gordon
Southgate must go. It's rare for international managers to get more than one crack at the whip. He's had 4 chances. Did very well in the early days, especially at the 2018 WC when England were write offs and we were accepting of 'negative football'. Unlucky in Euro 20, but proved that a winning mentality was now necessary to win anything. Failed to improve upon this however in the past 4 years, or show enough development; even with his sway to more populist decisions. Let another manager add new ideas to develop. Before the fruit goes rotten.
But can they ever win anything. Like ever. I don't know anymore.
What has Gareth really achieved? Lost against every difficult team we've faced. Taken a group of some of the best players in the world -- players who ply their trade week in and week out in the best and most profitable league in the world -- and turned them into directionless, caged lions who play in opposite ways to the way they play at their clubs. Every time Gareth comes up against a team as good as us, he loses. Every time. This time, he couldn't even beat up on teams ranked 40+ in UEFA's rankings. And, God, are England hell to watch. If the FA isn't careful, they'll lose a generation of England fans with this dross.
its interesting to hear Carra defending Southgate in this way, especially when in his career he massively benefited from having a manager that was a super astute tactician in Rafa Benitez. got them to two CL finals in 2 years (winning one again arguably one of the best club teams ever in the '05 Milan team). if England had a coach who was tactically really good, they'd probably have 3 major international trophies rn. and those are the cold hard facts.
It's not about Southgate telling a few players to press and the rest not to, it's about the fact that him and his coaches are poor every which way. Poor squad selection for the tournament, poor organisation, never worked on the press properly. Absolutely clueless when it came to playing players on form or recognising when players are struggling or carrying injuries. Absolutely honour bound to his favourite players, seems to have no clue whatsoever as to what position is, plays an 11 he likes best, not a best team, sticks anyone anywhere on the pitch. No idea how to change and play differently based upon differing opposition. Any time they have ever scored, and taken a lead, they have tended to try to defend that position to the death. No wings, two number 10s behind a striker who receives no crosses and who has no pace to go in the channels or receive a ball over the top.. The Spanish center backs could press very high knowing Kane couldn't go in behind them, and that press also restricted the space for the number 10s and left England hemmed in, with no outball.
He either needed to build the team around Kane, or to have dropped him for Watkins who was more suited to the tournament set up Southgate went with.
Notice our goal - without Watkins high position and pace - their center backs would have been 10/15 yards higher up the pitch and there would have been no space for Palmer's shot from the Saka cut-back. We ONLY score that goal because of Watkins and his position/threat. IF Kane was on the pitch, we don't score that goal.
If you want an epitaph for his England reign:
He took one injured left back to the tournament and when he eventually became available in the semi final, he played him at center back lol.
Rigid and negative!
The last twenty years or so, most top seeded International teams give a coach two years to develop a winning trophy team. If they win they stay on, if they don't, they are moved on... This process in reverse sequence has led to Spain, Argentina, Italy, France, Portugal, Germany, Spain, Brazil, Greece all winning something in that time frame... Southgate has had eight years and four tournaments and won the grand total of zero. How long do you keep going on like that? It seems people like Carragher and the FA are quite happy to embrace failure. English football at International level will never get rid of that 'failure is okay' mindset if this carries on by just hoping for the best.
England allowed Spain time by playing an Injured Kane. He was never going to press and we should have gone after them from the start.
As people say delusional....... Tiredness? The spainsh players have played just as many games as the England players. We have the 3 best players in European leagues the season just gone, Foden, Bellingham and Kane. Also we have the added bonus of the best remaining 23 players in Englands history in a tournament. You cannot blame anybody but the manager. Hes the person who is paid to get the best out of these players, hes had 4 tournaments and he has not learnt from anything in them to improve his tactics. In business if you do not do your job you would be sacked without any compensation. Football is the opposite. None of them live in the real world.
The bias of most of the English pundits is despicable. Foreign managers and players are open targets to be ridiculed and bullied, but when its the good ol' English lads, its all about their mental well being and their excellent behaviour. England deserve the trophies they've got so far.
2:38 Dint he do a comprehensive analysis about the space in the middle of the pitch with Ten Hag, nothing on Southgate's management Carra?
The best and honest analysis by Jamie that ive Heard about England's strengths and LIMITATIONS...BUT i don't agree with Jamie about Gareth to stay on. England needs a breath of fresh air with a more adventurous mind
This man is delusional get him out of here
Who dug this fool up?
Come the world cup in 2026 we will be crying out for Southgate to take us to the tournament because who ever has taken over from Southgate hasn't got enough time to bond, build and get the players to believe in there way of playing after what Southgate has achieved within the England camp .
This is a classic case of how the “media” build you up to a pinnacle and then cast you down like a rocky, crash and burn scenario.
Before and during the games even when we can all see how the team was scrappy, shaky and lucky, everyone was saying how great players were even Foden who played most games but did nothing.
Now that the players lost the “hindsight” is profound which I find interesting bcus it was clear this was a hype job from the outset bcus there were so many team far better than us like Portugal that didn’t get a mention like Spain yet the clamour is a joke
The fact that Southgate hasn't resigned is evidence that he's more interested in his generous salary than what's best for England.
What can you say about him now he has resigned, then?
I would have thought there was a good chance Southgate will take us to the World cup in 2 years time. The FA will conclude why change the formula. Which is a big part of the problem. Maybe the first thing to do is shake up the FA establishment!
Jamie Muppet Carragher wanting Southgate to stay on says it all.
A.manager who acts more like therapist who's great at bringing the players together but has no clue tatically.
A defensive coach who plays players in their wrong positions, whos reactive rather than being proactive. He has no idea on how to get the best out of our attacking players.
Jamie Carragher deluded here. Southgate should’ve left after the World Cup
Clown. Southgate has had four chances to win and the football is awful.
2 finals and a semi. By far the best record out of any manager. You’re the clown that thinks England should be winning these tournaments.
He is saying Foden could be tired after so many games … it must be that Rodri has only played 10 or 15 games then
Carragher is the only English pundit who makes any sense. Nobody else has pointed out that England lost the game because they were pressing high and trying to attack late in the game, which is EXACTLY what every Englishman wanted.
Carragher has a point in what he's saying and being a realist about the managerial position. Nevertheless, Southgate has been a great servant, he's taken us to back to back finals, and a semi all in 6 years. He has also led to the development of a cohesive squad and a better environment for the players. He should probably get a knighthood for his services to the national team.
It's now time for Eddie Howe, or another more experienced manager with less attachments to certain players which may cloud his judgement, to take the reins of the national squad.
The mainstream are a disgrace, if your watching that and saying keep him on then wobble your head. International managers have a shelf life then they go stale. Just look at LÖW who managed Germany from 2006-2021 between 06-16 they reached 4 semi finals, 2 finals and won a World Cup. Then after 16 it went stale and as a result of staying on 2 long it resulted in Germany getting Grouped in the World cup for the first time in 18 and then loosing to England in a knockout game for the first time in 2021. Then he left in a cloud rather than being celebrated. I’m telling you Southgate’s shelf life has expired and we must give whoever it is next a fair crack.
Thanks Gareth for bringing us back to the level considering where we was in 2016 but it’s time to step away and let a better man take the final step.
Who's next? That's question buried somewhere in all that waffle coming from Carragher. There's no obvious answer. I'd imagine Gareth will happily step aside and take a cushy job at the FA if there was an obvious replacement. And then, on the back of the obvious difficulty in finding a suitable replacement ... you start to wonder ... actually, is Gareth that bad? Is there an obvious and easy way to transform these lot from serial runner ups into runner ups who win every so often? These are questions keeping the big fellas awake at sweet FA
@@nicholasamuyedo5614 but the FA have shown ineptitude for far too long. They won’t ask Gareth to Change, Gareth won’t Change himself so get in a man who is prepared to change. Gareth has done well for us I’m in no doubt about that, but I just think he’s fell short 4 times
1 semi, 2 finals and a quarter final. And I just think another man deserves a fair crack at it. Who it is i don’t care I just want fresh ideas, and I want us to play freely. If we was managed by Spain boss Luis De La Fuente we’d have won the euros. But the FA are self serving and up their own arses and nothing will change.
And this team will fail like all England sides before.
Won 3, drawn 3, lost 1....Jamie...wake up mate!
Jamie highlights the fact that southgate got the team wrong in the early games, that too many players were in the wrong positions and the manager didnt correct the issues. This was the same as the croatia game and then the Italy game! Hoping for 1 or 2 big moments in a game isnt good enough any more if we ever want to win something.
Exactly, Southgate was not telling half the team to press and the other half to not press...the players should take more responsibility
Southgate OUT! England need a manager who will let the players play to their abilities and play brave football. Southgate approaches matches through fear.
BLAMING THE PLAYERS IS CHICKENING OUT. YOU CANT SACK THE PLAYERS.
People say back to back final loss as if it's a great dissapointment.
Before Southgate you only have Quater-final back to back loss or even last 16. They have reached WC semi-final and Quater-final and 2 Euro-final yet people still claim that the cause is easy draws or lucky draws. Have you not understood that England is not considered the Big One in world football yet?
If you want England to win something, promote English coaches. Promote English players in every positions in big clubs.
England didnt have a touch in spains half from the 76th till the 88th. What is Jamie talking about ? Did he watch the game? They ABSOLUTELY sat back again
I wish there were more people like Jamie Carragher who sees things through and really talks sense.
Carragher laying the blame on the players. Here's facts for you carragher: Harry Kane, 44 goals in 45 games this season for bayern. Plays in a fast attacking bayern team. Phil foden, over 20 goals in all competitions, premier league winner, Jude Bellingham, over 20 goals as a midfielder in la liga, champions league and la liga winner, Cole palmer, 24 goals for Chelsea in the premier league, Ollie watkins, 19 goals in the premier league for Aston villa. Do you see the pattern here carragher? These players score goals for fun and achieve at their clubs! The players are following southgates orders and tactics! Football pundit? Football expert? Ok.
Finally, a pundit speaking some sense about Gareth. Jamie is spot-on about the performances across the 4 tournaments. So many pundits and fans have very short memories.
Then Definitely another reason Southgate should go , jamie "the spitfire" carrrrrrraggggghhheeerr suggesting he should stay....😂😂
Best pundit by a country mile, his analysis is spot on, and it's a shame that Sky rarely have him as part of the Super Sunday punditry team. I know he does MNF, but would be great if he did more Sunday games as well.
I don't support England so I agree, let Southgate stay on as manager 😂
As the former U21 Eng manager, why did Southgate struggle to see Mainoo's talent? He almost didn't put him in the 26 man squad. He then tried Trent and Gallagher ahead of Mainoo who proved himself every time he came on the pitch. Surely Wharton could of got a few minutes of play? Had Maguire been fit, Guehi would never of got the chance to prove himself as he did throughout the tournament. I hope Maguire doesn't reclaim a starting position and Guehi get discarded going forward.
Because the current Young Lions weren't *his*.
He just does not want Klopp going to England.
The next few weeks will be tough, they’ll be on holiday, wow , what planet are these people on
Exactly. Guarantee the England mnt lads, now we're a few days on from the final, and whatever they claim on social media, have forgotten about it and shrugged it off, privately thinking it's not a big deal. They're either back at their clubs for pre-season having a better time than at SGP, or somewhere sunny and exclusive on a jolly.
"That's where the money is?" Have you seen Gareth's contract? Highest paid coach at the Euros. For what? Fiddling with his lineup while The Three Lions burn?
Carragher isn't analytical. We were sat back not pressing. That's why it was so easy to play through England.
Southgate doesn't trust the player's 🤷🏾♂️ refuses to use New players NOOO plan B or C!🤬🤬🤬🤷🏾♂️
Southgate must GO!!! PLAYING INJURED PLAYER'S WHEN YOU HAVE FIT PLAYERS ON THE BENCH 😮😮😮
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Carragher’s is the only sensible opinion I have heard
In parts of the game it seemed as if England were in awe of Spain. I think Bellingham was even shouting at Southgate to change things. Kane shouldn't have started; Foden should have been off early he had 0 goals and 0 assists, only plays well with De Bruyne, Haaland, Silva and Rodri; Rice sometimes plays too deep; substitutions too late, again; Gordon was not used much all tournament.
A third or more of this Spanish team play in England with England mnt players, some are even mates off the pitch. So why would they have been in awe?
Gareth has got a background of being a failure in football. Wasn't he relegated once? Or fired before relegation at Sunderland? He clearly gets outplayed tactically by the coaches he's playing against in every one of these big games. How can you want more of this failure? I don't get it. Idiocy is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.
Saka got found out last night. Both goals came from his side, spains left back had him in his pocket. If he gets back in like shaw was doing on the other side they two goals don't happen. He was in dream land for the goals
Its easy to not play Kane if he's not fit Jamie...we need a strong manager who makes these decisions. Currently we don't have one!
Dear Jamie let me tell you that yesterday was not a matter of individual players' performances. Football is a collective game and what Spain showed is that without the generation of a collective mechanism of attack and defence, it is impossible to face any serious team. Leaving the game under players' free will shouldn't be an acceptable team tactic. Southgate must, not only line up players but also enhance them by the transmission of the best ways to win. And Gareth has resigned to do that (or he is unable).
Carragher doesn’t know what he’s talking about!
1) Saka didn’t have a great tournament
2) If the best managers need to be on the training ground to implement their style, why did SouthGate fail at Boro?
3) He said it’s nonsense to drop Kane. Ok so what would he have to do to be dropped?
Great analysis from Carra
Carragher by far talks most sense out of all pundits and people hearing this still blame Southgate 😂😂
Speaking since the sad news that Gareth Southgate quit the England job, this is the most common sense view and appraisal of Gareths achievments, that I've heard spoken since we had that news!
All the hate coming Gareths way, is totally unmeritted and unjust!
We owe that man alot and we'll realise that just as soon as we go out in the 2nd round of the next World Cup...that is, if we qualify (USA '94 anyone?)!!
Southgate did an incredible job throughout his tenure. 2018 we were in shambles and our expectation was low and he delivered a great tournament. I think the criticism on his playstyle is fair and we have rode our luck, perhaps over delivered considering his tactical ideas. Something isn't clicking with the team regardless if the team say the manager is good. I feel sorry for SG, gave his all player and manager and not quite crossed the line.
I think the bigger question is who will replace him and perhaps who will come in that the fans will accept? I can perhaps only see Pep as a serial winner making fans happy (albeit if there are other good choices available).
Jamies says “ we aren’t Brazil or Germany, don’t win trophies”
That’s the exact loser mentality England suffers.
Spain before 2008 won exactly one title and that was the euros in the 80s. They’ve now won 4 titles. History doesn’t FREAKING MATTER. Englands players are better now than Germany, Brazil, Italy or Spain. Still they win NOTHING.
Get in Mourinho, Ancelotti or Klopp and I guarantee you they’ll win the 2026 World Cup. England actually NEED a foreign manager.
Brazil ain't Brazil anymore, FYI. The field is open for a team to step in and do some serious damage in these tournaments. Lots of elite managers would be salivating at managing this groups of football studs.
Brazil aren't great but Argentina are (although throwing away a 2-0 lead in two knockout matches, and beating the only tough opponents on penalties is not impressive).
Saying the best team on the night and in the tournament won without asking why is why english football is to continue failing
Carra makes good sense about Southgate staying. Perhaps what should be looked at is retaining Southgate but bring younger coaches in to support his effort with an emphasis upon attacking play and fresh ideas.
Yes, there could have been a third way. Imo Steve Holland has always been more of an issue than Southgate.
The problem is that they didn't play to Kane's strengths. They needed runners. That's Southgate's responsibility. I love the guy but if you play Kane you have to play to his strengths. There's no doubt he's the best striker we have but he needs a specific style of play and players around him.
The fans criticising Foden really don't understand football, and judging stats only is a modern-day problem. Foden is the ONLY player who wants the ball ALL the time, doesn't hide, wants to play it first time, and can take it in tight spaces off both feet. Surrounding him with players like Rice, Jude and Kane who cannot do that is not his fault. Jude spends so much of the game not showing for it, pointing to the back four to pass it elsewhere, Kane doesn't make any runs behind the low block, Jude cannot play off both feet in tight spaces...watch the game back.
Foden is England's best player and should be the first choice for years to come. Pep knows that too which is why he let Gundegan and Mahrez leave and has built that team around him and Rodri while KDB is always injured. Can you imagine another nation suggesting he be dropped? How can you assist when your striker doesn't get near the box? How can you score when you're played out on the wing and no-one can play the ball to you quickly first time? Foden and Palmer should have the team built around them and any manager worth their suit will do that.
Jamie needs sacking if he thinks Southgate should stay on. He has taken England as far as he can. We need a world class manager in charge now.
He talks the most sense of all of them to me. We need to become more attacking with more energy but our problem with that 2nd spansoh goal was that we were too spread out on the pitch so criticising gallacher coming on is foolish....not that hes my favourite!
Fill Foden completely lost but played 7 games and 0 goals and and zero assist
Been loving having a carra free tournament. Very nice
Yet another brainrot Jamie Carragher take.
Carragher has been watching the same games. Southgate was lucky to get to the final. England not better than France, Germany, Portugal. All would have beaten England. Southgate is 2 defensive and needs to leave. He cant progress further as he is defensive. Spain showed how you can play expansive positive football as a team.
Carragher cared more about winning with his club than his country. So I’m not surprised we haven’t taken care of business.
its time for Kane to play a new role behind the striker. he likes to come deep and build the play and England need a striker with pace.
England might not have played amazingly in the previous tournaments they did play better than this year, even back in 2018 with a much weaker team. At least in the previous 3 England won matches by more than 1 goal and didn't go behind in every knockout match.
People forget how bad it was before Southgate. Dont ruin what we have. Lets win the world cup! Only one step further.
The players is what has made the difference for England the last 8 years and the quality of the club mangers coaching them England players who play alongside some of the best foreign players in the world at club level and with the added fact of the lack quality of the international competition in Europe the last 10 years that is what has got england to European finals. NOT Gareth Southgate or his coaching or tactics. Playing a low block no wningers a slow forward and waiting for individual brilliance to win you games is not being tactically astute and is not the qualities or traits of a top winning manager. Someone like klopp would not have to manage the England team because they already play the way he would want them to play for there club sides. What klopp has is a big enough personality and the authorite within the game to drop any star players he needs to drop to get the right balance in the team and the tactical awareness to make in game decisions at the right moments and uses all the bench at vital times to win games and trophies! We have got to European finals despite Gareth Southgate not because of Southgate simple.
Same man was saying ten hag should go. This time Southgate isn't to blame it's the players. Clown
Don't think many england fans would share your sentiments right now jamie
