I had a rush of excrement to the brains and used my brush cleaning stuff and… well it cleaned the paint off good but also started to dissolve the plastic too!!! Currently sanding down my space marine and working out what to do with him!! 🤦♂️ If you do a paint scheme your not happy with how do you clean it off with out destroying the figure and all its detailing??
Your calm voice and demeanour while providing an easy-to-follow step-by-step tutorial is such an excellent way to give newbies like me encouragement to not only start projects, but also have fun. My hat's off to you, Sir!
Gotta love a good metallic scheme. The Thousand Sons are some of the most unique looking marines out there, both in Heresy and in 40k. That shiny red just feels special. Alpha Legion also look great in a metallic scheme. That blue/green/teal effect that Forge World painters do on them makes them really stand out. and this tutorial is excellent for painting that scheme as well. Change out the gold for silver and the red for Akhelian Green or Terradon Turquoise (or both) and you're off to the races.
I had no idea that shade paints tend to slip off of a surface sprayed with a metallic basecoat; I've been having that exact issue painting some CSM for a long time, and I've been beginning to doubt the quality of my Nuln Oil/my wash application skills. Knowing that I ought to go over it with a proper base paint first is a great tip!
Painted an entire army of 30K 1k Sons 3 years ago -- all 1980s Chaos Renegades (and on hexagonal bases for old times sake). I heartily recommend using Tamiya's clear red to tint your metallic paint red. No need to worry about being so careful (as you do using the contrast overpaint method). The only drawback is that you need to spray a 'Satin' Varnish over your miniatures at the end. This because the Tamiya clear red is gloss.
Thanks for this one Duncan! I've just got myself a Heresy-era Ahriman, so this will come in very handy. I had an idea for a video whilst I was watching too - technical brush skills. By this I mean things like showing what a 'good' amount of paint on a brush looks like, how thin is too thin, etc.
I like the gold edge on the candy-red power armour. The white bolter is an unsual colour, I've remember seeing that with the Iron Hands in 2013. It works with the colour scheme of the Thousand Son.
That looks amazing Duncan. I just have difficulties getting the contrast paint to behave. It always seems to become streaky. You could probably have pre-highlighted before you put the red on. That way the highlights would have also been red. Wouldnt it have been a bit more fitting if they had light blue eyes? What with their warp powers and all.
Picked the same method for my 40k Chapter but wasn't sure about the right way to highlight the red. Now I know what to do to finish themin stile ^^ Thanks a lot, Duncan
Stellar tutorial Duncan! Would love to see your take on more metallic looking Sons of Horus, like the older HH Black Book art. I've seen a few people attempt this with stuff like Coelia Greenshade sprayed over a metallic base in the past, as well as Vallejo's XPress Snake Green.
I love doing the airbrush method, but this is perfect to me for smaller areas that I don't have the room to mask off, or that masking off would just be a lot of work for such a small area.
Thanks for the tutorial! :D now the funny thing is that while I really like the Thousand Sons and Magnus in general, the video is far more important to me in a kinda unexpected way, because now you showed me a great way to paint Blood Ravens! Time for good old Commander Boreale to meme around some more! STEEL REEIN!!!! :D
One thing I’ve seen done is to preshade the gold before applying the filter (contrast), that way you get that candy apple red but still have some variation in it for highlights.
This looks great on infantry, but what about vehicles, I've been trying to figure out the candy red on tanks and dreadnoughts can this method work for them without looking streaky ?
Love this video personally i prefer taymia clear red for the glass look but a great video flr an easy way to paint thousand sons as a lot if people find tgst challenging
Hi Duncan & Co, what a sweet candy red this gives. Really impressed. I'm wondering if you have any tips (perhaps a video idea?) on a 40k Iron Hands paint guide. I'm thinking something with a metallic undercoat might also suit them just like the Thousand Sons, but I'm curious how you would approach them to make that black pop on the table top. Thanks!
I feel the gold could be used for more prominent characters. Silver could be used for regular marines, though I suppose you could just chip with silver
So many of the heretics have such tragic backstories, poor puertorabo was cast aside by the imperium and heretics alike, Angron was remembered a coward after the Emperor kidnapped him, Conrad curse was branded a heretic for doing what he was made to do whilst space wolves were lorded by the emperor. I find so many of the heretics far more likeable than say the aragance of the lion and I think GW did a great job of making it all really blurry about who the “good” guys were
We used to but it got a little tiring and arduous for the viewer (feedback) so we included a link in the description to a colour conversion chart on our website 😊
I was just thinking that I should get around to stripping and repainting my Burning Of Prospero set, and moments later I see that you've posted this vid! Quick question: Does the contrast over gold provide a particular effect, or can I use a red paint that I already own without buying a contrast paint that I doubt that I'd use on anything else?
@@DuncanRhodesDRPA i figured it was either that or just personal dislike of the heads, but then the shoulder pad was an oddity to me in the case of just simplicity. Still phenomenal work, kinda makes me want to repaint my blue 40k dusty boys like this.
Great question. The simple reason is the quality of ingredients to make the best paint we possibly could. Our paint isn't 'from the shelf' with a label smashed on but one we developed from the ground up. We wanted it to have both excellent coverage as well as be incredibly smooth and that unfortunately, doesn't come cheap. We also have over 3ml per bottle more including an agitator added to each one and no matter the paint you buy from a wash to an acrylic to a metallic, it's one price. I hope that answers your question 😊
I usually don't bother highlighting my miniatures for playing. Showcase minis - yes, by all means. But in my personal experience, such detail work is wasted in models that are in use.

What color would you recommend using to do a candy blue?
I would also cover all the metal red elements with gloss varnish to improve candy red effect
Please emperor children.

I mean, I have seen people calling him the "Bob Ross of Warhammer". There is a good reason for that !
@@vatiti9573 Then Duncan is in good company indeed!
Magnus did the right thing, the wrong way. It’s like doing Morse code with a machine gun.
Yup! Hindsight is 20/20
The best way I've EVER heard someone explain this.
Hold up you don't Morse code with a machine gun?

As someone who did a modern day thousand sons offshoot with the heresy colors with the idea of "All is not yet dust" this one hit hard
Blood Raven's?
Nope. XD @@JRFO292
I think they're offshoots from a hybrid of Raven Guard and Blood Angels.
Always wondered how to make such a neat Candy Red. Thanks Duncan for another amazing class!

Really useful! Several touches I didn't know before
Duncan using his own paints is a flex few could ever achieve

They do usually have jewel-blue eyes, which looks quite striking, but it’s not unheard of to do other colours if you want to :)

you can Airbrush the Blood angels red and just thin it down with a drop of airbrush thinner and you get the same resault :)
Will you make a video on how to make arbites into Judges from 2000AD
Can you do a tutorial on salamander cloaks? Maybe a few different techniques and colors

Pretty similar to how I paint gems and lenses.
How do you do the green gems and lenses? Mine don't seem to come out over gold or silver.

I love the colour, but what do you do if you make a mistake and accidentally paint over the red with another colour. How do you correct that?
Can u paint the current thousand sons like u did the adeptus custodes and use the blood angels red contrast paint for the blue bits of armor
A question. I want to paint a Blood Raven's army's. Kinda find .... Nice to use this color scheme with some variations, any advice?
Could you airbrush the red stage to make it speedier for large batches?
how would this work for a spartan tank, seeing as lots of flat panels?

Where are the two thin coats paints sold?
Can you airbrush the red over the gold?
Does this same process work for rubric marines if I wanted to do them with their pre heresy colors?
Yes 👍

Sure, if that's the effect you are after it could look quite cool. If you are unsure, then test it on a spare mini :-)
I'm gonna try this method for my emperors children
how does your red not look grainy. I followed the exact same process but your red look so much more shiny.
It may be that your metallic paints needed a bit more mixing or it could be that your metallic layer needs a few thin coats.
great video Duncan, have you considered doing a tutorial on contrasts over metallics?
Is dragons gold a citadel paint?😅
What if I make a mistake like letting psychneuein near a non-protected human?
Are these all citadel paints?
Why is two thin coats paint more expensive then citadel paint?
