I know this video has nothing to do with Eurovision, but I thought I'll post my wishlist for one of your next Eurovision weeks (whenever that would be) here as you maybe don't pay too much attention to late comments on your previous (Eurovision) videos...
Anyway, here's the thing - I am from Latvia and those, who follow Eurovision religiously, will know, that Latvia has not been very successful in Eurovision. Since our debut in 2000, we have had 2 long non-qualification streaks (6 years in a row from 2009-2014 and our current 6 NQ streak (gonna be 7 after this year by the looks of things) since 2017). Latvia is actually so unpopular (unfairly imo) in Eurovision that when you ask people about what they know of Latvia in Eurovision, most will only remember Aminata from 2015.
To show that we're actually not that bad (remember our budget is nowhere near those from Sweden, Finland, Ukraine etc.), here are some of imo best/most iconic songs from Latvia in Eurovision Song Contest. Also - seeing that you guys like ballads as well, I think this list you might enjoy :)
5. Marie N - "I Wanna" from 2002 (to start off, here's our only win in the contest. It may not be the best song or she may not be the best singer, but she is a true Performer (with capital P), because it was thanks to her convincing performance that she managed to win. In the song/performance she's basically singing about wanting to have the upper hand in her relationship, so slowly she reveals her real self (by removing male clothing and becoming female) throughout the performance. It was genius at that time, which is why it deserved the win. Basically she showed the importance of visuals in Eurovision, which is why later on visuals became more important than the song)
4. Citi Zēni - "Eat your salad" from 2022 (one of our most controversial entries, which promotes healthy/greener lifestyle (with some hidden 18+ themes and the most unique opening line to a song). The most energetic song we've ever sent.
3. Walter & Kazha - "The War Is Not Over" from 2005 (this is just a normal (pretty sad) ballad with two guys playing their guitars, but what makes it unique is that they use sign language in the 2nd half of the song. I've been a long term Eurovision fan, but I can't remember anyone ever using sign language in their performance. This song didn't win the contest, but it won the hearts of the deaf community. They barely qualified for the final (10th in semifinal), but the love from the deaf community was shown during the final, where they finished 5th, which no one really expected from them before the show.
2. Sudden Lights - "Aijā" from 2023 (the Eurovision community voted this song as the most underrated song of ESC 2023. Many people were shocked that this didn't qualify for the final. This lullaby to the crazy world we live in stands out with it's unusual time signature (5/4 switching to 3/4), which many professional musicians rated very highly, because it's a big risk doing something like that in Eurovision). Many even say that this song was simply too good for Eurovision, which is why it didn't get the appreciation in deserved (especially due to the lack of professional juries impact on votes)... at least not in Europe. It was appreciated outside of Europe, as they scored 3rd place in the semifinal in Rest of the world votes.
1. Aminata - "Love Injected" from 2015 (like mentioned before, this is the singer/performance most people will remember about Latvia in Eurovision. Loads of people think that this song should've won Eurovision in 2015 and it didn't win (finished 6th) only because it was from Latvia. Had it represented a bigger/more successful country, it probably would've won. This song and overall performance was truly a masterpiece (the music video is also top notch), especially when you consider that our budget is one of the lowest from all participating countries.
To conclude - Latvia may not have the budget of big countries and has one of the worst qualifying %, but I believe Latvia is one of the most unique countries in Eurovision and majority of the time comes up with something unusual (both good and (sometimes) bad).
