Quick question I know I have seen in Bill Walsh book they would do a short hook out if the backfield with a running back (if QB read cover 4 and deep shot is not there) and dump it off. I know the game has evolved a lot since then and maybe linebackers play the pass and are much more athletic now. So my question is would that still work in todays game game vs cover 4? It seems underutilized with the middle linebacker having to occupy so much space. Thanks again for this cover 4 explanation I used to wonder how you beat a cover 4 over the top (without someone on defense being out of position).
Throwing to the checkdown(running back) is very often done against cover 4. Defenses are often willing to give up the short throw when they play cover 4 because they are trying to prevent the deep throw.
