- In the past Nikon’s ‘nifty fifty’ was a stalwart of pocket friendly lenses. In fact my own 50mm 1.8 AF-D was a much loved lens - till I moved to the Z mount cameras.
The Nikon 50mm 1.8S is fantastic, but it’s also large and expensive. The 40mm F2 fills that gap. Much more affordable than the 50mm 1.8, and significantly lighter too. This review discusses the merits of the 40mm F2 Z mount lens.

Comprehensive review, and love the nature pictures included in your reviews.
Having an interest in old 35mm film cameras, it is noticeable that quality fixed prime lens models predominately had 42-45mm lenses. I would go further, medium format cameras of the time had 75-90mm lenses which were also 42mm equivalent on 4.5x6 to 6x9cm formats. This format produced the most natural (to the eye) images. In the 1960-70s interchangeable lens cameras became more widespread the question became 35 or 50mm standard lens. My view is the nifty fifty supremacy time is over as manufacturers return to a more pleasing natural focal length. Yes I have the new 40mm f2. Very pleased with it.
Great review. This was my most recent purchase. Agree, it's not my sharpest lens, but the focal length is great for street photography, not only because it's more inconspicuous, but because it's lightweight, and easy to pack. I've done a couple international trips with just this lens and have gotten some decent results.
I've seen the 40mm being mentioned a fair bit and I'm still undecided by it.
My 40 mm came with the new ZF. I have an aversion to 35 mm lenses so this one fits nicely in between my 24 and 50.😂
Why do you have an aversion to greatness?
Any focal length Lens shorter or longer than 50mm is more useful !
