My goodness... I literally just watched this channel yesterday and got very drawn to it. I started to wonder how DADGAD would sound with this ambient style (because I play DADGAG all the time) and then he uploaded this video TODAY!
I love this tuning. I've found it to be, for myself, the most conducive to creativity. I get my most compelling and exciting ideas playing in this tuning.
By way of extension: Any and every tuning can be used for the creation of ambient music... As always, the guitarist’s imagination is the *only* limitation. The Ambient Sky is the ‘limit’!
I love DADGAD. I started experimenting with it a few years back, and now my acoustic lives in that tuning. 2 months ago I installed an LR Baggs mic in there which has allowed me to start running the acoustic through my pedalboard and I have been in heaven! Love the chord voicings, and all the available octaves “in the box”. Lends itself very well to ambient soundscapes. Great video! Keep on rockin

I stared experimenting with alternate tunings because of David Wilcox. I can’t believe how little recognition he gets for his playing. Also that’s a great crunch tone you have going Bill!
The other night I restrung and tuned my 8-String 27" scale Ibanez to the very similar FADADFAD and now this shows up on for me lol... it's really fun and inspired a lot of new things.
I play Celtic music and am very familiar with it. I play mostly in Drop D but do a few tunes in DADGAD. I’ve been following your channel for quite a while so was really glad to see this video. Holy Smokes Bill! I've watched dozens of your vids. This one is awesome, for many reasons. Yeah, because it's informative, yadda yadda. I opened this one because I was specifically looking for more to do with DADGAD that's NOT on an acoustic guitar. I'm 73, and been playing (and gigging since 1965) a long time. I play electric because I don't personally care for acoustic. I'm working with a new band, and we're doing "all kinds" if stuff I never played before. Up until recently I played Jazz, Blues, and years ago, Classical. And I was only one time, a decade ago, in a "Classic Rock" band for a short time. One of the songs we decided to do (partially because of the HUGE range our lead vocalist has) is Kashmir. So I tuned up (OK, down! LOL) to DADGAD and worked on the song. Love playing it. And wanted to have a couple more rockers in DADGAD, partially to justify lugging a guitar to gigs that I only use on one song. I still haven't found any. BUT . . . that being said . . . Why I think this particular video is awesome . . . it's your playing! As I said, I've heard you play for hours and hours. Always great stuff. But dude, you have GOT to focus on entertaining in DADGAD more! You are an outstanding DADGAD player! NOTE: I just watched the video again just to listen to you play.

Love that Tuning even down to drop C! All strings just one full tone more down tuned. It is great for a band with just one guitar to get some doomy low tunes while adding some octaved highs and licks (here called hybrid picking, did not know there is a word for that :) ). I had a band with a guitarist with that tuning and had to hear the tuning out of rehearsal recordings. Now I am recording it after the bands breakup some years ago to bring the songs back to life again. Very interesting and sometimes hard to get the notes out of those recordings, but it is making more and more sense now to me. You can get very interesting chord progressions with this tuning! Try it with your punk or hardcorebands to get some deep weight to your songs! CGCFGC go! :D
You just set me on the new track for my ambient improv. I normally tune all my guitars in standard tuning, but will tune my Dot Studio in DADGAD to do a couple of experiments.... Thnx Bill 😎

Anyway, I'm ashamed to say I've managed to avoid DADGAD for 40 years. Time to change that, I think. Being Scottish and playing some Scottish folk, this tuning would definitely enhance my playing. I have my acoustic tuned to DADGAD as I play a lot of Irish traditional music. Never tried tuning an electric like that, sounds great for ambient stuff!
I've been really interested in trying open C tuning, in no small part to Devin Townsend. Seems like different tunings give plenty of options for arpeggios and chords. Hardest thing for me is having to learn all new chord shapes!
I pretty much only play in open C at this point, and yes, I am a huge Devin Townsend fan lol. I would actually feel lost trying to play in standard at this point.
Excellent lesson. Beautiful guitar. Led Zeppelin used an array of open tunings. On Going to California they used D A D G B D, close to your tuning. Blood on the Tracks by Dylan uses Open E, but I tune to Open D and Capo on Second Fret. D A D F# A D. Of Course Joni Mitchell used Open E and many different tunings. I would assume Nick Drake at some point used this tuning because he had so many tunings.
I am happy to do more with alternate tunings, but I have to say that I am not particularly fond of NST. The minor 3rd interval between the 1st and 2nd strings is very annoying.

I just got a baritone guitar and have been playing it in the equivalent (AEADEA). My favorite “trick” so far is playing a unison shape between the second and third string, which sounds particularly nice using the high A as a drone string. For example, unison would be the fifth fret on the second string and the seventh fret on the third string, which sounds awesome with the high A too. Also try muting the low E string for a super thick A.
My two alternate tunings are C G C G C E = open C C G D G B E = "half craft" because C G D A E G = Robert Fripp's "Guitar Craft" tuning I do want to try DADGAD, but I also want to try David Crosby's EBDGAD, which seems related

Cashmere by led zeppelin is actually done dadgad but the sheet music is in standard tune i wonder how many people got frustrated trying to learn certain songs because the people printing the sheet music didn't really bother to get it right
Anyone ever try DADADE? It's a lot of fun. You do have to bring the natural G and B up to and A and D, which can be a scary move for those attached to their strings staying intact. But I doubt a baritone would have any struggle.
Here's my method to get to DADGAD using Harmonics : natural (Harm.) on 7th fret 3rd string (G) TUNE down 12th fret (Harm.) 1st string (E) to match then, (Harm.)on 7th fret 4th string (D) tune down 12th fret (Harm.) 2nd string (B) to match then,4th string (Harm.) 12th fret, tune down 6th string (E) . It's a very fast way to tune because you don't have to hold anything down while you tune. I've never heard of anyone else using this method and I've read a ton of Guitar Mags on DADGAD from the late 60's to the 90's and a few current. HAVE FUN !

By trial and error I have figured out some two and three finger open chords up and down the neck, although these are essentially d drones. I am trying to incorporate 6th and 9th chords in em d g a, there is very little info out there about extended chords. Play in DADGAD Creates a whole other sound due to the sympathetic vibration of the strings. Any other shortcut tips for speeding up the learning curve for progressions and chords?
What I meant to say is that I just use my ears with DADGAD and I stumble on chords I couldn't or wouldn't be able to play in standard and that way it brings out the unique sound of the tuning, rather than try to make it sound like my regular playing with different fingers

I’ve been doing a lot of “back to basics” acoustic learning and am taking a music theory class online, so I’ve mostly stuck with standard tuning
Ironically I learned to tune my guitar to DADGAD before I could tune to standard . Being an ear player I just discovered open tunings by trial and error . Needless to say not without a lot of broken strings . I finally figured out to always tune down ... never tune up ...especially the G string .

saw Emma Ruth Rundle play in NYC early this year, she plays a lot of her songs in DADGAD but tuned a full step down and it sounded phenomenal

I played with DADGAD tuning in the late 60s. Remember the song by the Doors? The End. The melody was in a minor scale using DADGAD.
The part with the power chords reminds me of the sound of Helmet in the 90s. So this is how they did it :)

I use DADGAD a lot, along with DADFAD (open D minor). Love open chords. Great for ambient, but they also work for rock and metal.
The 1st time i hear someone using dadfad..you can fly only with a few open harmonics.
Abheces Habemuskk dadfad is very common used if you are a Japanese fingerstyle guitarist, lol

I don't worry about keys. I just play everything in D, from pop to classical. You just need to find where the melody starts.

I,m wondering if DADGAD tuning doesn't predate concert tuning . I think Baroque instruments were Diatonically tuned .
