- After the Oklahoma City bombing in 1993, Michael Moore's TV Nation visited the Michigan Militia and encouraged them to put down their arms and participate in democracy. Militia Commander Norm Olsen bakes a cake, and later the Militia members travel to a local carnival where they ride the Ferris Wheel and sing "Kumbaya."

I always find it strange that Americans despite being the biggest military power in the world are seemingly frightened by everything. Listening to the content and reading some posters comments they are scared that someone will invade them, they are always talking about the threat of terrorism, the Chinese, the Russians are out to get them, Mexicans massing on the borders, possible civil war, tyranny or some description. If I were to list my national concerns today , I doubt any of these would get into my top 10. Americans just need to stop buying into this fear narrative put out by media and interest parties, the truth is not everyone hates them, not everyone is plotting against them and not everyone thinks about them constantly.
I use to sing and play my guitar at the Youth/ Adult Council Coffee House held in the basement of the Saugatuck Congregational Church. "If I had a Hammer' sung by Peter, Paul and Mary was one of them. Honest I sang that just this morning. Michael 'We the People' all have our stories, thank you for letting them tell them.

Militia are supposed to be under the command of the governor to be legal, or the president, but if the president orders them to act against the governor, that would be insurrection or treason in the current circumstances.

It is an experiment. The government here is by the people for the people based on simple majority, and to target a governor, on behalf of a federal president, for unfounded reasons is Treason or Insurrection. Perhaps one could say if a Governor incited a riot or rebellion against the federal level targeting a specific individual, it would perhaps be considered sedition. If A governor targeted the IDEA of the federal authority it is Treason or Insurrection. We have a President who targeted a Governor based purely on politics and misogyny , it is an attack on the republic standard, Treason or Insurrection.

I am truly sorry to see so many men from Michigan and Ohio supporting these militias. Dayton, Ohio had a visit from Indiana's Grand Cyclops in green satin with an entourage of eight others. The City erected barriers, hired extra police costing more than $350,000 for a single day and had little to spend after 15 EF 4 tornadoes hit our town on Memorial Day, 2019. Where I live, Dayton, Ohio, the area is completely doxxed. Then there was a brutal mass shooting on 8/4/2019. Will we ever forget the KKK visit or their sympathizer that killed nine people and injured even more? And now they want to start a Civil War? I am thankful for FBI and their response to this menace, whenever they are found.

Patrick Van Gelder the militia of 2020 and the militia of 1995 are not the same thing at all. In 1995 you had to be vouched for and go on training missions. Today you just make a fb group called _____ militia and invite other fb people to join. Both are larping but the 1995 set had a hierarchy of command that (usually) prevented stupid shit. I love Michael Moore! He always has the courage to find & document truth. I was feeling extremely hopeless for our country, sure that violent people - almost ALWAYS far right - would cause a lot of violence & chaos after the election.
Mike met with these angry, militia men, listened to their stories to understand why they felt & acted as they had. He got them to talk about some of the losses, fear, frustration & pain beneath their anger. He helped them to become aware of & express some of theif grief, which heals. He reminded them how doing fun & funny things, along with singing soulful songs together touches your heart, softens those hearts & brings them back to caring about humanity.
I'm so proud of him, he's a genuinely good human being & one of my heroes. Help this go viral so hopefully this is the kind of interactions that groups of people start having all over the country!
BTW, most of the things these men & others like them are angry about are the results of at least 40 years of Republicans in Congress cutting funding for services & programs the middle & lower classes NEED to thrive, indeed to survive: education & training programs, not making sure wages (including our minimum wage) keep up with the cost of living, they've cut before & after school programs - PROVEN to help kids stay in school & do better, Medicare, Medicaid & Social Social Security- which is money that was taken out of every paycheck all of us ever got - yet Congress has only funded it AND Unemployment @ 3% of our $TRILLION national budget! They've weakened or outlawed unions so workers' salaries, working conditions & numbers of hours they have to put in have all suffered. Republicans allowed pharmaceutical companies to charge whatever they wanted to - vs regulating them like Canada does, one being insulin, to the point many people - with or without healthcare ins., can't afford it & die. They rejected a bill for pay equity so everyone gets paid equally for equal work, decreased funding for low income housing, including programs specifically to help veterans re-integrate into society, as many of the homeless are vets from Vietnam & thousands more from the never-ending wars in the Middle East.
Congress has been doing all this while continuing to 'rescue' the already entitled banks, huge corporations, Wall Street, big oil & the extremely wealthy & drastically cutting their taxes (completely eliminating taxes for some millionaires & Billionaires), not giving incentives for companies to develop & build free & non-polluting wind & solar power, but along with loosening or eliminating the amount of pollution factories can pour into our air, water (rivers, aquifers & oceans) & land; which then of course infects/kills the plants & animals that we eat, which poisons us. They also give incentives to these businesses!
Republicans in general, definitely those in Congress - & the people who elect them & don't check on or care what their 'representative' is voting for & against - don't believe the racism/sexism/elitism brought by the English colonists from the moment they set foot on this continent became the toxic laws, customs, values & institutions that remain part of our society to this day.
That toxic legacy is what we must fight against now. Vote out of Congress all those, fascist Republicans or establishment, corporate money-taking Dems, who believe those old English values of 'might makes right' 'every MAN for themselves', that how important you are is literally based on your net worth, that those living in poverty deserve to be there because they're not as smart, they're lazy, they 'lack character'. Yet the majority of the millions of the poor/homeless are women & children, minorities & veterans. These people are subject to discrimination in getting hired, can only get jobs that don't pay a living wage, those who the legal system is biased against.
The entitled rich forget all the financial help, connections & opportunities that allowed them to easily enrich themselves. They think they're rich because they're better, instead of the truth that they're just luckier.
If they were smarter they'd realize they need to pay unemployment for those out of work, or who have less hours of work due to COVID19, because their unemployment isn't voluntary, they CAN'T go back to work. So if they don't get money to pay for their apartments/houses, there will be millions more people living on the streets, having lost EVERYTHING, through no fault of their own. Think 'Les Miserables', minus music & it's not theatre. These unemployed people will have few possessions, no food, no water, no shelter, nowhere to go! And of course no medical care & during a pandemic! It will be a chaotic trainwreck, domino style.
This catastrophe can be avoided, but only if those in Congress treat this as the national emergency that it is. We're a wealthy country which could transfer money from far less important budgets to unemployment insurance, to keep the unemployed in their homes until there's a vaccine for COVID & there are jobs to return to. This would avert a social, medical & economic disaster. Because the main factor that drives a strong economy is 70% consumer spending! It's not the stock market, it's people having money to spend on food, clothes, gas, buy a car, get things that break down fixed, etc., etc.!
So remind your Congress people that even though they don't care about those who are without an income or the tragedy of losing things they've worked for for years, that they must pay all the unemployed unemployment to SAVE OUR ECONOMY! It's the budget, stupids!
Congress votes on the budget, it's not written in stone, it reflects Congress' priorities. So what are their priorities, who do they think need the most money for the 2020 fiscal year? Well, a ludicrous 54% goes to 'Defense', WAR actually because no country is going to invade us. So they - the Pentagon, military contractors, the 'black budget'/covert, secret - therefore illegal - military operations ($90 BILLION) & the places that are continuing to make weapons get more than half our entire budget! Got to keep those wars going with 6 or 7 countries in the Middle East, not for democracy or freedom but for greed, oil, the wealthy & for imperialism. And our 150+ bases we have around the world. Cutting black ops alone would free up $90 Billion, boom, right there. And end these never-ending wars immediately because every young man or woman who goes over there will lose their lives (half of those are suicides, either over there or once they've come back), a part of their body & a lot/all their mental health via PTSD. The VA doesn't immediately- if ever - give them the medical care they need!
Our gov cares about war, not our troops or vets. That'd free up another $300 BILLION to plump up our social safety net, much cheaper/free college ed., single-payer health insurance for all. And of course, to pay back the money Congress has 'borrowed' from Social Security for years AND give $30 Billion or so for Unemployment. Not the puny 3% Congress has seen fit to cut it & Social Security down to. That's not all, not even close, (but I'm almost done). Another of our Congress' priorities over providing the basic human needs of shelter, food, medical care, clothes to our neediest (including kids), is the $60 Billion the NSA gets, whose budget has increased every year. Can you believe that? $60 Billion to record all Americans' data from all our electronic devices, including computers, cell phones, Siri, etc.
The NSA is a priority to Congress - who are primarily wealthy, white, conservative men! Even after Edward Snowden, a true patriot & courageous whistleblower, came forth with the truth about NSA's surveillance activities after its director, James Clapper, LIED to a Congressional hearing on mass surveillance of Americans. He was asked directly twice if this was being done by the NSA? He answered a firm 'no' both times! Perjury! But Snowden's conscience wouldn't let him stay quiet & now he's a 'traitor' for revealing illegal gov activity. There is NO LEGITIMATE reason for our government gathering data on us. And the other unnecessary 'intelligence'/spy agencies like the FBI, Homeland Security, CIA - who lately have been shown to have played a major role in committing horrific torture on 'suspects' flown to another country.
So besides hyping up Michael Moore's way of interacting with angry, para-military groups with respect, humor, song, caring & information to turn to better ways of changing what's wrong in our country, I hope you will also call your Congressional representatives to tell them to prioritize all our people's well-being, not war, not spy agencies, not the wealthy, but all our people are your priority!
I have never been so impressed with an comment in a long time. Thank you for pointing out all the details that has suppressed the lower classes of our society. When people are not happy, they fight and make angry decisions. When you never get a good job, and are working three jobs. You have no life, no hope and don't know your future. Before corporate got cheap on their workers and started to break unions, we had hope of a good retirement. We had money in the bank. We had a good health insurance plan. But it's gone now, and the one percent just laugh at our anger. Now we work like crazy all hours of day at half the pay. Our bosses make more money than several large nations put together. Dear Joanna Hampton: You may think that they're crazy, but they represent a strand of American History. Read about Shay's Rebellion in Massachusetts in 1786. War veterans in rural Western MA got fed up with the merchants in Boston who ran the statehouse and formed armed militias that shut down local courts. They were quickly defeated but it was a factor at the Constitution Convention in forming a strong fed govt that could resist such uprisings of the people. Now it seems to many people that it's gone too far in the other direction. That' where the MI militia and other such right wing groups pick up this historical strand and run with it again. Notice that these guys said nothing about Trump. From a historical perspective, they represent something much bigger than Trump, and they're just using him to achieve their real goal, which is a "government of the people, by the people, and for the people", as they see it. Thank you for posting this clip. What's super sad is that we have a government that has never done right by all of its people all of the time. If the majority of Americans (regardless of race, religion, gender, etc.) had access to good jobs that paid a decent living wage and offered work/life balance, strong public school education, affordable public college education, affordable healthcare, healthy/whole non-pesticide laden food, and beautiful and accessible public spaces there probably wouldn't be the militias, crimes, racism and anti-government sentiment that exists. There will always be some crazy people out there who will do whatever whenever and are unable to be reasoned with, but the vast majority of people simply want to live quality lives with dignity for themselves and their families.

I can remember years ago traveling thru Montana and driving thru a town that was a militia/mercenary place. I stopped at a gas station and got out of my van. No one turned the gas tanks on. I looked around and across the street, was a fenced in area with a big sign, " Don't Even Think Of Stopping Here!!"
I calmly looked back at 2 men in the station who now stood at the window.
We nodded at them and waved...and left their town.
Now I think every state has people like who hate the Government structure.
Especially dictatorships.

It’s got to be PTSD. I feel so sad for these guys😢. My ex husband was a Vietnam Vet. He is my ex because of PTSD. Wouldn’t take meds while we were married. Still love him and we are best friends now, but found a replacement because he didn’t like that I knew he needed help. His name is Norm, too. He is a great guy but very disturbed with what most of us can’t understand. God bless this country 🙏. Most of us will never understand what is in their heads.
